London i/ˈlʌndən/ is the capital and most populous city of England and the United Kingdom. Standing on the River Thames, London has been a major settlement for two millennia. It was founded by the Romans, who named it Londinium. London's ancient core, the City of London, largely retains its 1.12-square-mile (2.9 km2) medieval boundaries and in 2011 had a resident population of 7,375, making it the smallest city in England. Since at least the 19th century, the term London has also referred to the metropolis developed around this core. The bulk of this conurbation forms Greater London, a region of England governed by the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. The conurbation also covers two English counties: the small district of the City of London and the county of Greater London. The latter constitutes the vast majority of London, though historically it was split between Middlesex (a now abolished county), Essex, Surrey, Kent and Hertfordshire.

Here it is, our pilot episode! Why am I doing this? I travel a lot. Too much. And recently I find myself rocking up in a city that I've never been to before and know very little about. On any level. Culture, language, transport, money, food, etc. But most travel shows are an hour-long, US-centric, full of bad information, and almost exclusively aimed at tourists. In our pilot episode we get you in, out, and around the wonderful city of London, England. We tell you the best way to get from the airport into the city, the best way to get around, how much things cost, and why you should ALWAYS stand on the right. In follow up episodes we'll be adding ...

London, the capital of England, has been an important financial, educational and cultural center for centuries. This world city is filled with iconic symbols. Tower Bridge is a striking reminder of London's rapid expansion during the industrial revolution. To the west of this is the country's seat of power, the Palace of Westminster. Opposite it stands Westminster Abbey. Perhaps the most famous of all London's churches is St. Paul's Cathedral. Buckingham Palace, located on the Mall, near Trafalgar Square, is the official residence of Queen Elizabeth II. Another legacy of England's monarchy are its Royal Parks, of which there are eight. Hyde Park and Green Park provide hectares of greenery in London's center. Culture and entertainment is everywhere in London; from the Royal Albert Hal...

It was the world's first underground railway and 150 years to the day since the first ceremonial journey, I made the same three and three quarter mile journey from Paddington to Farringdon. That train set off from Bishop's Road (Paddington) station, what are now the Hammersmith and City line platforms. There is nothing left of the original station and the platforms are having work on them at the moment so we start at the Praed Street station, now the Circle line platforms, opened on 1st October 1868, on the then new branch line to Gloucester Road. This is similar to how Bishop's Road would have been, having alcove walls and curved roof. Passenger trains started the next day, 10th January 1863, using GWR (Great Western Railway) broad gauge (7ft) carriages, the line having been built wit...

Another day out on the Met. Starting at Moorgate, the Crossrail works there are in connection with the new station at nearby Liverpool Street. On to Farringdon (5:16) where there is more evidence of Crossrail construction. The original 1863 underground station buildings are nearing the end of a restoration, opposite the new Thameslink/Crossrail station buildings. All the full size Underground trains, ie not tube stock will be repalced over the next couple of years by the new S stock being delivered from Bombardier in Derby, some 1395 coaches equating to 191 trains. The oldest being replaced are the Metropolitan line's A or A60 A62 stock dating from 1961 to 1963 built by Cravens of Sheffield. Also seen is the recently extended to 12 car, Thameslink platforms which will see up to 24 trains a...
After I finished filming at Bedford, I decided to film the return journey to Farringdon onboard 319217 + 319440. The service was 1W45 15:50 Bedford to Brighton (which is usually pathed as a Class 377/387, but that day the 319's must have been standing in for other units that were unavailable). 319217 was at the front, and I was on 319440 at the back. We call at Flitwick, Luton, Luton Airport Parkway, Harpenden, St Albans City, and then Non-stop to London St Pancras! After that, we then get off at Farringdon, and the train continues on to Brighton. We hit 100mph between St Albans City and London St Pancras, and with 4 of the windows open, it was absolutely deafening! Watch the other video I took that day at Bedford.
