The sea otter (Enhydra lutris) is a marine mammal native to the coasts of the northern and eastern North Pacific Ocean. Adult sea otters typically weigh between 14 and 45 kg (31 and 99 lb), making them the heaviest members of the weasel family, but among the smallest marine mammals. Unlike most marine mammals, the sea otter's primary form of insulation is an exceptionally thick coat of fur, the densest in the animal kingdom. Although it can walk on land, the sea otter lives mostly in the ocean.
The sea otter inhabits offshore environments, where it dives to the sea floor to forage. It preys mostly on marine invertebrates such as sea urchins, various molluscs and crustaceans, and some species of fish. Its foraging and eating habits are noteworthy in several respects. First, its use of rocks to dislodge prey and to open shells makes it one of the few mammal species to use tools. In most of its range, it is a keystone species, controlling sea urchin populations which would otherwise inflict extensive damage to kelp forest ecosystems. Its diet includes prey species that are also valued by humans as food, leading to conflicts between sea otters and fisheries.
A sea is a large body of salt water that is surrounded in whole or in part by land. More broadly, "the sea" is the interconnected system of Earth's salty, oceanic waters—considered as one global ocean or as several principal oceanic divisions. The sea moderates Earth's climate and has important roles in the water cycle, carbon cycle, and nitrogen cycle. Although the sea has been travelled and explored since prehistory, the modern scientific study of the sea—oceanography—dates broadly to the British Challenger expedition of the 1870s. The sea is conventionally divided into up to five large oceanic sections—including the IHO's four named oceans (the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian, and Arctic) and the Southern Ocean; smaller, second-order sections, such as the Mediterranean, are known as seas.
Owing to the present state of continental drift, the Northern Hemisphere is now fairly equally divided between land and sea (a ratio of about 2:3) but the South is overwhelmingly oceanic (1:4.7).Salinity in the open ocean is generally in a narrow band around 3.5% by mass, although this can vary in more landlocked waters, near the mouths of large rivers, or at great depths. About 85% of the solids in the open sea are sodium chloride. Deep-sea currents are produced by differences in salinity and temperature. Surface currents are formed by the friction of waves produced by the wind and by tides, the changes in local sea level produced by the gravity of the Moon and Sun. The direction of all of these is governed by surface and submarine land masses and by the rotation of the Earth (the Coriolis effect).
Otter is a common name for a carnivorous mammal in the subfamily Lutrinae. The 13 extant otter species are all semiaquatic, aquatic or marine, with diets based on fish and invertebrates. Lutrinae is a branch of the weasel family Mustelidae, which also includes badgers, honey badgers, martens, minks, polecats, weasels and wolverines.
The word otter derives from the Old English word otor or oter. This, and cognate words in other Indo-European languages, ultimately stem from the Proto-Indo-European language root *wódr̥, which also gave rise to the English word "water".
An otter's den is called a holt or couch. Male otters are called dogs or boars, females are called bitches or sows, and their offspring are called pups. The collective nouns for otters are bevy, family, lodge, romp (being descriptive of their often playful nature) or, when in water, raft.
The feces of otters are typically identified by their distinctive aroma, the smell of which has been described as ranging from freshly mown hay to putrefied fish; these are known as spraints.

An orphaned sea otter pup in California has officially landed a forever home. On September 30th, a passerby heard her cries during an evening stroll. An orphaned sea otter pup in California has officially landed a forever home. She was first discovered on September 30th when a passerby on an evening stroll heard her cries. The baby was in a remote location and initially she couldn’t be reached. The following day, the pup was still in the same spot and experts concluded she had likely been orphaned. Staffers from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife transported her to Monterey Bay Aquarium where she received care for about a month. Experts determined that the little sea otter couldn’t be reintroduced to wild, so officials from Shedd Aquarium in Chicago jumped up to help. ...

Sea otters are a keystone species, meaning that an entire ecosystem depends on their presence. After they were nearly hunted to extinction for their dense fur, sea urchins (the otters' favorite food) nearly destroyed the Pacific kelp forests, a habitat that hundreds of species rely on for food and shelter. Thanks to the hard work of conservation scientists at places like the Monterey Bay Aquarium, sea otter populations are on their way back. Here's the story of one orphaned sea otter pup's journey back to...

It’s not every day you get to watch a sea otter pup come into the world! But when a pregnant wild otter took shelter in our Great Tide Pool Saturday, we had a unique opportunity to see it happen. (Spoiler alert: the miracle of life is graphic!) Sea otters can give birth in water or on land. You’ll notice that mom starts grooming her pup right away to help it stay warm and buoyant—a well-groomed sea otter pup is so buoyant it’s practically unsinkable! Grooming also helps get the blood flowing and other internal systems revved up for a career of chomping on invertebrates and keeping nearshore ecosystems, like the kelp forests in Monterey Bay, and the eel grass at Elkhorn Slough, healthy.

this is so long I'm sorry lol We went kayaking with sea otters, seals, and sea lions and it was heckin great (if slightly terrifying with the sea lions bumping into our boat)). Then we did the aquarium at Monterey, and then I think it was a 2 hour drive to San Francisco. We were dropped at pier 39 to see all the sea lions that live there, we explored the pier and went to see Lombard Street - the crookedest street in the world!! um then we had to run back to the pick up point bc we ran out of time. Probably one of my favourite days, in fact the whole of San Fran was just great tbh Hope you enjoyed this slightly longer video! During the mid-80s, zoologists still regarded the European otter as a species on the verge of extinction. What they did not take into consideration was the fact that the shy aquatic animals are extremely adaptable. Using their intelligence and cleverness, they have been able to re-conquer parts of Europe during the last few years, including their old homeland, Austria.

Join the Vancouver Aquarium for an insightful presentation on the natural history of sea otters. Sea otters were prized for their thick fur and hunted to extinction in British Columbia in a commercial fur trade that lasted from the late 1700s until 1911. They were reintroduced to BC from 1969 to 1972 when 89 Alaskan sea otters were released off the northwest coast of Vancouver Island. Since their “repatriation”, the Canadian sea otter population has grown and spread to over 5,000 along the outer coast and north end of Vancouver Island and off BC’s central coast. The return of sea otters, which has resulted in dramatic changes to coastal ecosystems, has not been without controversy. Sea otters depend on a thick fur and a prodigious appetite to stay warm in their chilly ocean environment ...

I've got you under my skin
I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
I've got you under my skin
I've tried so not to give in
I said to myself this affair won't go so well
But why should I try to resist when baby I know more
than well
I've got you under my skin
I've got you under my skin
And I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
I've got you under my skin
I'd sacrifice anything come what might
For the sake of having you near
In spite of a warning voice that comes in the night
And repeats, repeats in my ear
Don't you know fool you can never win
Use your mentality wake to reality
But each time that I do
Just the thought of you makes me stop before I begin
'Cause I've got you under my skin
I've got you under my skin
I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
'Cause I've got you under my skin
oooohhhh

I've got you deep in the heart of me
So deep in my heart that you're really a part of me
