About the Speaker:
From 1996 to 2013, Professor Krishnan was a member of the faculty at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), India.
Professor Krishnan was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania (Fall 2008), and at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad (2011-12). He held the JamunaRaghavan Chair in Entrepreneurship at IIMB from 2007-10.
Professor Krishnan’s main areas of interest are strategy and innovation. He was listed among the Thinkers50 India most influential thinkers in management from India (2013) and jointly received the special Thinkers50 India Innovation award (2013). Earlier, he received the Dewang Mehta Award for Best Teacher in Strategic Management in 2010.
Professor Krishnan’s recent book, 8 Steps to Innovation: Going from Jugaad to Excellence (co-authored with VinayDabholkar, and published by Harper Collins in March 2013), outlines a systematic path for organizations to build innovation capabilities. This book has been chosen as the Best Book of 2013-14 by the Indian Society for Training and Development
Professor Krishnan is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Stanford University and IIM Ahmedabad.

A center of excellence refers to a team, a shared facility or an entity that provides leadership, evangelization, best practices, research, support and/or training for a focus area. The focus area in this case might be a technology (e.g. Java), a business concept (e.g. BPM), a skill (e.g. negotiation) or a broad area of study (e.g. women's health). A center of excellence may also be aimed at revitalizing stalled initiatives.
Within an organization, a center of excellence may refer to a group of people, a department or a shared facility. It may also be known as a competency center or a capability center. The term may also refer to a network of institutions collaborating with each other to pursue excellence in a particular area. (e.g. the Rochester Area Colleges Center for Excellence in Math and Science).
In technology companies, the center of excellence concept is often associated with new software tools, technologies or associated business concepts such as Service-oriented architecture or business intelligence. In academic institutions, a center of excellence often refers to a team with a clear focus on a particular area of research; such a center may bring together faculty members from different disciplines and provide shared facilities.

About the Speaker:
From 1996 to 2013, Professor Krishnan was a member of the faculty at the Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore (IIMB), India.
Professor Krishnan was a Visiting Scholar at the Center for the Advanced Study of India, University of Pennsylvania (Fall 2008), and at the Indian School of Business (ISB), Hyderabad (2011-12). He held the JamunaRaghavan Chair in Entrepreneurship at IIMB from 2007-10.
Professor Krishnan’s main areas of interest are strategy and innovation. He was listed among the Thinkers50 India most influential thinkers in management from India (2013) and jointly received the special Thinkers50 India Innovation award (2013). Earlier, he received the Dewang Mehta Award for Best Teacher in Strategic Management in 2010.
Professor Krishnan’s recent book, 8 Steps to Innovation: Going from Jugaad to Excellence (co-authored with VinayDabholkar, and published by Harper Collins in March 2013), outlines a systematic path for organizations to build innovation capabilities. This book has been chosen as the Best Book of 2013-14 by the Indian Society for Training and Development
Professor Krishnan is an alumnus of IIT Kanpur, Stanford University and IIM Ahmedabad.

Spencer was an incredibly passionate Mo Bro. He sadly died of prostate cancer in 2013, but still holds the title of the highest ever individual Movember fundraiser in the UK.
Nancy visited the Movember Centre of Excellence in London to meet it’s Director Johann de Bono and learn more about the amazing work being funded by Spencer and the whole Movember community.
The work at the London Movember Centre of Excellence, led by Professor Johann de Bono at the Institute of Cancer research, examines the genetic basis of the disease to help identify the men that are most at risk of aggressive prostate cancer and to improve treatment choices based upon each man’s genetic make-up.
As we celebrate the first year of the Movember Centres of Excellence we’re pleased to share that some great progress has already been made. 93% Of Great Barrier Reef Hit By Coral Bleaching Australian scientists have revealed that 93 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef has been affected by coral bleaching. The Arc Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies released video on Wednesday of extensive aerial and underwater surveys conducted in March and April. Scientists flew over 911 individual reefs in a helicopter and light plane, to map out the extent and severity of bleaching along the full 2,300 kilometre length of the Great Barrier Reef. Of all the reefs, only 7 per cent or 68 reefs escaped bleaching entirely. 93% Of Great Barrier Reef Hit By Coral Bleaching
Australian scientists have revealed that 93 per cent of the Great Barrier Reef has been affected by coral bleaching.
The Arc Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies released video on Wednesday of extensive aerial and underwater surveys conducted in March and April.
Scientists flew over 911 individual reefs in a helicopter and light plane, to map out the extent and severity of bleaching along the full 2,300 kilometre length of the Great Barrier Reef.
Of all the reefs, only 7 per cent or 68 reefs escaped bleaching entirely. At the other end of the spectrum, between 60 and 100 per cent of corals are severely bleached on 316 reefs, nearly all in the northern half of the reef, underwater, teams of scientific divers confirmed the accuracy of the aerial surveys.
Coral bleaching is caused when abnormal environmental conditions cause coral to expel tiny photosynthetic colourful algae. Bleached coral can recover if the temperature drops and zooxanthellae are able to recolonize them, otherwise it may die.

On 29th March 2016, aerial surveys of more than 500 coral reefs from Cairns to Papua New Guinea revealed that the most pristine section of the Great Barrier Reef experienced the worst mass bleaching event in its history, with the overwhelming majority of reefs being ranked in the most severe bleaching category. The surveys were conducted by Prof Terry Hughes from the ARC Centre of Excellence for Coral Reef Studies, convenor of the National Coral Bleaching Taskforce, and James Kerry, project manager of the taskforce.

Global car makers have been ramping up investments in India to cater for the promised growing domestic demand. They plan to leverage India’s competitive advantage to set up export-oriented production hubs, building on the governments “Make in India” initiative. Last year factories exported a record 3.5 million vehicles, 15% more than year ending March 2014. Domestic sales were just above 2.6 million units, up 5% in the same year. The auto components industry generated US$38.5 billion turnover in 2014 –15, and exports accounted for US$11.2 billion.

Many of its state of the art technologies have revolutionized the world of coins as we know it today : color circulation coins, multi-ply plating technology, five 9 pure gold (.99999), holograms in coin, laser adapted to coin manufacturing, DNA technology in coin security and authentication....
In order to continue to lead the world and to expand its successful path to create new technologies to serve the minting industry of the world the Royal Canadian Mint is establishing a world class Research Center where the latest developments in science and computerized automation, the latest knowledge in cloud computing, in software development, in science and engineering, in material sciences, in cash management, in phone communications and changing consumers' habits ... are going to be developed in order to serve future generations of consumers. The Research Center will also be used to train engineers, managers and directors of the Mints of the world who will come to learn basic and advanced minting technologies since minting engineering is not a specialty course taught at any university, in the world. The Research Center will also serve as a cooperative Research and Development facility for engineers and scientists of all the Mints in the world.
In his book, The Story of the World Money Fair, published in 2012, Albert M Beck believes that the person who has been at the center of the advancement of minting for the whole world, and who has perhaps contributed the most to the knowledge of minting of the world for the last forty years is Dr. Hieu Truong of the Royal Canadian Mint. To honour Dr. Truong whom the Royal Canadian Mint also believes to be the best known engineer and the most knowledgeable person in minting today, the Mint is going to name its 10 million dollar brand new research building in Winnipeg, Canada, as the

Stellenbosch University's (SU) Centre for Research on Evaluation, Science and Technology (CREST) has been chosen to host a Centre of Excellence (CoE) in Scientometrics and Science, Technology and Innovation (STI) Policy. SU currently has four other Centres of Excellence.
This latest Centre is one of five new CoEs announced on Tuesday by Science and Technology Minister Mr Derek Hanekom and brings to 14 the number of CoEs created since 2004 by the Department of Science and Technology and the National Research Foundation (NRF).
The aim of these Centres is to promote collaborative and interdisciplinary research among research-performing institutions, and to provide high-end skills development in priority research areas. According to Hanekom, the five new CoEs will contribute to South Africa's knowledge-generation capacity, increase the number of world-class researchers and attract and retain research excellence. CoEs head research in areas that are regarded as being of national interest. They are intended to speed up the provision of the necessary human resources and knowledge capacity. They also serve to make South African research more internationally competitive and to stimulate research excellence and develop capacity.
