Ashrei is a psalm, attributed to King David. It was sung in biblical times in the
Temple in Jerusalem. It is part of the Morning and Afternoon service to prepare worshipers
for the Call to Prayer (the Barchu). After the introduction, the Psalm follows the Hebrew
aleph-bet, each line beginning with the next letter, forming an acrostic. This tells us that it
was once memorized using the aleph-bet as a memory device. Only the letter nun (p) is
missing, traditionally because it begins the name of the prophet Nathan who criticized King
David a great deal. We chant this song responsively, perhaps like our ancestors did
thousands of years ago.

In this sacred and spacious melody, Rabbi Shefa has captured the depth of meaning in the concept of "dwelling within." Only since playing with this melody, have I come to understand this passage, which I chanted my whole life. When we are dwelling deeply within, it is there where we encounter the Divine who was, in fact, there all along.
Rabbi Shefa's melodies of prayer continue to be a source of deep comfort and inspiration to so many.

The Ashrei (Hebrew: אַשְׁרֵי יוֹשְׁבֵי בֵיתֶךָ, עוֹד יְהַלְלוּךָ סֶּלָה, Ashrei yoshvei veitecha, od y’hallelucha, selah!; English: Happy are they who dwell in Your house; they will praise You, always!) is a prayer that is recited at least three times daily in Jewish prayers, twice during Shacharit and once during Mincha. The prayer is composed primarily of Psalm 145 in its entirety, with a verse each from Psalms 84 and 144 added to the beginning, and a verse from Psalm 115 added to the end. The first two verses that are added both start with the Hebrew word "ashrei" (translating to "happy" or "praiseworthy" or "fortunate"), hence the prayer's name.
Times of recitation
Ashrei is recited three times daily during the full course of Jewish prayers, in accordance with the Talmud, citing Rabbi Eleazar ben Abina of the 4th century, which says that one who thoughtfully recites Ashrei three times daily, particularly the verse פותח, is guaranteed a place in Olam Haba (the World to Come). It is for this reason that not only is Ashrei recited these three times, but many of its verses occur throughout liturgy.

Ashrei is a psalm, attributed to King David. It was sung in biblical times in the
Temple in Jerusalem. It is part of the Morning and Afternoon service to prepare worshipers
for the Call to Prayer (the Barchu). After the introduction, the Psalm follows the Hebrew
aleph-bet, each line beginning with the next letter, forming an acrostic. This tells us that it
was once memorized using the aleph-bet as a memory device. Only the letter nun (p) is
missing, traditionally because it begins the name of the prophet Nathan who criticized King
David a great deal. We chant this song responsively, perhaps like our ancestors did
thousands of years ago.

In this sacred and spacious melody, Rabbi Shefa has captured the depth of meaning in the concept of "dwelling within." Only since playing with this melody, have I come to understand this passage, which I chanted my whole life. When we are dwelling deeply within, it is there where we encounter the Divine who was, in fact, there all along.
Rabbi Shefa's melodies of prayer continue to be a source of deep comfort and inspiration to so many.
