During his September visit to Povardarie David was fortunate enough to be there during the annual grape harvest. Winemaking has been a part of Macedonian culture for more than 2,000 years! A visit to Povardarie will give you the opportunity to taste several Macedonian varieties, as well as international wines.
David begins his wine adventure at Tikves. Here, David was given the opportunity to see how the grapes are separated and cleaned before being pressed. The entire process of picking grapes takes about a month. At Tikves David tries several Balkan wines and a very good rakia.
Next stop of the day is Stobi Winery for a tour of the fermenting tanks and a peak at their harvesting process. During his lunch at Stobi David tried five types of wine. He also left with a couple of his favorites like Moscat and a Macedonian red wine called Vranec.
Like the other two wineries, Popova Kula was in the midst of a harvest. David and the crew woke up at 5:30 AM to catch the action for themselves. David even took part in the action and was cutting grapes alongside the other workers in the vineyards. Popova Kula is on our list of 10 Places You Must Visit in Macedonia
Popova Kula produces over 20 wines, many of which are Balkan varieties like Zilavka, Stanushina, and Prokupec.

The country excels in several areas of the ease of doing business, and also undertook reforms in the past year. For example, Macedonia further simplified the process of starting a business by introducing compulsory online registration. As a result, the country is now the second best performer globally in the area of Starting a Business.
Lithuania and Latvia are the second and third highest ranking economies in the region, with a global ranking of 20 and 22, respectively.
Over 90 percent of economies in the Europe and Central Asia region implemented reforms to improve their business climate during the past year, finds the World Bank Group’s annual ease of doing business measurement.
Doing Business 2016: Measuring Regulatory Quality and Efficiency, a World Bank Group flagship publication, is the 13th in a series of annual reports measuring the regulations that enhance business activity and those that constrain it.
Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 189 economies.
Doing Business measures regulations affecting 11 areas of the life of a business. Ten of these areas are included in this year’s ranking on the ease of doing business: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency. Doing Business also measures labor market regulation, which is not included in this year’s ranking.
Data in Doing Business 2016 are current as of June 1, 2015. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms of business regulation have worked, where and why. This year’s Doing Business report continues a two-year process of introducing improvements in 8 of 10 Doing Business indicator sets—to complement the emphasis on the efficiency of regulation with a greater focus on its quality.

The contemporary political crisis in the tiny Republic of Macedonia has important implications for the greater Balkans region, says journalist for the Economist and The New York Review of Books Tim Judah. The crisis, despite its miniscule media coverage outside of the tiny former Yugoslav republic, could spell problems for the uneasy peace that has prevailed in the region for the past decade or so.
The current crisis started when Macedonia’s political opposition began to leak tapes of Macedonian officials allegedly involved in illegal activity, including illegal surveillance and undue influence on the court system. Last week a deadly gunfight broke out in the Albanian-majority city of northwest Macedonia between Macedonian police and militants that the government has described as ethnic Albanian terrorists. Many in the country believe that the assault may have been an attempt to deflect attention away from grievances with the government. Over the weekend, massive street protests were held in the capital of Skopje, which included members of all the country’s major ethnic groups, a rarity according to Judah. Despite the appearance of ethnic divisions, Judah believes that Macedonia’s major ethnic groups share many of the same grievances with the government, particularly a lack of economic opportunities and corruption. There is a danger that the government could play the nationalist card in an already volatile region.

It is written in Dorian scale, in iambic 15-syllable (ιαμβικός δεκαπεντασύλλαβος). The beat is 2/4 and it can be danced as a chassapiko (χασάπικο). It can be performed in conjunction with the Makedonia dance. In addition, the text refers to Alexander the Great, who is the progenitor of the Greek Macedonians.

Macedonia 
i/ˌmæsᵻˈdoʊniə/ is a geographical and historical region of the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe. Its boundaries have changed considerably over time, but nowadays the region is considered to include parts of six Balkan countries: Greece, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia and Kosovo. It covers approximately 67,000 square kilometres (25,869 sq mi) and has a population of 4.76 million.
Its oldest known settlements date back approximately 9,000 years. From the middle of the 4th century BC, the Kingdom of Macedon became the dominant power on the Balkan peninsula; since then Macedonia has had a diverse history.

Tim Judah
Tim Judah is a reporter and political analyst for The Economist, and has written several books, mainly focussing on Serbia and Kosovo.
Career
A graduate of the London School of Economics and of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, he worked for the BBC before becoming the Balkans correspondent for The Times and The Economist. During the Kosovo war he broadcast widely and wrote for the New York Review of Books,The Observer, The Sunday Telegraph and The Guardian Weekend magazine.
Judah has reported from numerous places, for a wide variety of newspapers, and other outlets. Apart from the Balkans, Judah has reported from countries including El Salvador, Iraq, Afghanistan and Uganda. In 2009, Judah was a Senior Visiting Fellow at the European Institute of the London School of Economics. Recently, Judah has also written highly praised articles relating to the War in Donbass.
Judah is married to writer and publisher Rosie Whitehouse and has five children, one of whom is the journalist Ben Judah.

During his September visit to Povardarie David was fortunate enough to be there during the annual grape harvest. Winemaking has been a part of Macedonian culture for more than 2,000 years! A visit to Povardarie will give you the opportunity to taste several Macedonian varieties, as well as international wines.
David begins his wine adventure at Tikves. Here, David was given the opportunity to see how the grapes are separated and cleaned before being pressed. The entire process of picking grapes takes about a month. At Tikves David tries several Balkan wines and a very good rakia.
Next stop of the day is Stobi Winery for a tour of the fermenting tanks and a peak at their harvesting process. During his lunch at Stobi David tried five types of wine. He also left with a couple of his favorites like Moscat and a Macedonian red wine called Vranec.
Like the other two wineries, Popova Kula was in the midst of a harvest. David and the crew woke up at 5:30 AM to catch the action for themselves. David even took part in the action and was cutting grapes alongside the other workers in the vineyards. Popova Kula is on our list of 10 Places You Must Visit in Macedonia
Popova Kula produces over 20 wines, many of which are Balkan varieties like Zilavka, Stanushina, and Prokupec.

Doing Business presents quantitative indicators on business regulations and the protection of property rights that can be compared across 189 economies.
Doing Business measures regulations affecting 11 areas of the life of a business. Ten of these areas are included in this year’s ranking on the ease of doing business: starting a business, dealing with construction permits, getting electricity, registering property, getting credit, protecting minority investors, paying taxes, trading across borders, enforcing contracts and resolving insolvency. Doing Business also measures labor market regulation, which is not included in this year’s ranking.
Data in Doing Business 2016 are current as of June 1, 2015. The indicators are used to analyze economic outcomes and identify what reforms of business regulation have worked, where and why. This year’s Doing Business report continues a two-year process of introducing improvements in 8 of 10 Doing Business indicator sets—to complement the emphasis on the efficiency of regulation with a greater focus on its quality.

The contemporary political crisis in the tiny Republic of Macedonia has important implications for the greater Balkans region, says journalist for the Economist and The New York Review of Books Tim Judah. The crisis, despite its miniscule media coverage outside of the tiny former Yugoslav republic, could spell problems for the uneasy peace that has prevailed in the region for the past decade or so.
The current crisis started when Macedonia’s political opposition began to leak tapes of Macedonian officials allegedly involved in illegal activity, including illegal surveillance and undue influence on the court system. Last week a deadly gunfight broke out in the Albanian-majority city of northwest Macedonia between Macedonian police and militants that the government has described as ethnic Albanian terrorists. Many in the country believe that the assault may have been an attempt to deflect attention away from grievances with the government. Over the weekend, massive street protests were held in the capital of Skopje, which included members of all the country’s major ethnic groups, a rarity according to Judah. Despite the appearance of ethnic divisions, Judah believes that Macedonia’s major ethnic groups share many of the same grievances with the government, particularly a lack of economic opportunities and corruption. There is a danger that the government could play the nationalist card in an already volatile region.

In this episode, David takes us with him as he checks out the top things to see and do in Ohrid, Macedonia – a city at the center of Lake Ohrid tourism.

David starts with what to see in the city of Ohrid. He begins in the Old Town, which is home to several beautiful buildings like the historic Robevci House. He then makes his way up the hill to see some of Ohrid’s historical monuments. First up is St. Jovan de Kaneo, a Byzantine-style church perched above the shore of Lake Ohrid. This is one of the most photographed places in Macedonia.
Another beautiful church to check out is St. Clement Church. David’s guide Zivka gives some background on St. Clement. Then it’s time to head to to Tsar Samuil’s Fortress for amazing views over Lake Ohrid. Samuil was Tsar of the First Bulgarian Empire and best known for defending Bulgaria against Byzantine domination. He eventually moved the capital of the Empire to Ohrid and built one of the greatest strongholds in the Balkans. Today the fortress is a great place for panoramic views of the Lake and the city of Ohrid. Admission is 30 Macedonian denar.
Up next: The Roman Theatre. It was built to accommodate 4,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial battles. Recently it was uncovered and is free to enter. The acoustics here are wonderful!
Heading back down the hill David visits one of the most important monuments in Macedonia, the Church of St. Sophia. Again, Zivka chimes in with some more information about the Church. The surviving frescos dates back to the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.
David and the team walk back to the main square of Ohrid to shop for Ohrid’s famous pearls. He introduces us to a man whose family was the first to bring the tradition to Macedonia. The Talev family workshop has been here since 1924.
David reminds us that no visit to Ohrid is complete without first taking a boat ride on Lake Ohrid. From here, you’ll get magnificent views of the city and lakeshore. Hire a local captain from the Ohrid Marina for one-hour tour.
The next day, David embarks on his first day trip from Ohrid, bringing him south of the city to National Park Galicica. The park separates Lake Ohrid and Lake Prespa. It’s a popular with hikers and nature lovers who want to enjoy the clean, fresh air and stunning views of the lakes and towns below. You can also take your own car like David did.
A visit to the Monastery of St. Naum and the Black Drim springs is also a fantastic day trip from Ohrid. The monastery is located on a rocky outcrop at the southernmost part of Lake Ohrid near the Albanian border. Inside this cross-shaped church is the tomb of St. Naum. David sees if the local legend is true – you can hear St. Naum’s heartbeat if you put your ear to his tomb… it’s up to you to judge!

In this episode, David takes us with him as he checks out the top things to see and do in Ohrid, Macedonia – a city at the center of Lake Ohrid tourism.

David starts with what to see in the city of Ohrid. He begins in the Old Town, which is home to several beautiful buildings like the historic Robevci House. He then makes his way up the hill to see some of Ohrid’s historical monuments. First up is St. Jovan de Kaneo, a Byzantine-style church perched above the shore of Lake Ohrid. This is one of the most photographed places in Macedonia.
Another beautiful church to check out is St. Clement Church. David’s guide Zivka gives some background on St. Clement. Then it’s time to head to to Tsar Samuil’s Fortress for amazing views over Lake Ohrid. Samuil was Tsar of the First Bulgarian Empire and best known for defending Bulgaria against Byzantine domination. He eventually moved the capital of the Empire to Ohrid and built one of the greatest strongholds in the Balkans. Today the fortress is a great place for panoramic views of the Lake and the city of Ohrid. Admission is 30 Macedonian denar.
Up next: The Roman Theatre. It was built to accommodate 4,000 spectators and was used for gladiatorial battles. Recently it was uncovered and is free to enter. The acoustics here are wonderful!
Heading back down the hill David visits one of the most important monuments in Macedonia, the Church of St. Sophia. Again, Zivka chimes in with some more information about the Church. The surviving frescos dates back to the 11th, 12th, and 13th centuries.
David and the team walk back to the main square of Ohrid to shop for Ohrid’s famous pearls. He introduces us to a man whose family was the first to bring the tradition to Macedonia. The Talev family workshop has been here since 1924.

The name of this ancient country, Macedonia has remained the same since the emergence of the first Greek tribes thousands of years ago. This is the oldest area of the country. According to legend, this is the home of deities and the place where they had to protect their home against enormous giants. The land is a rich treasury of minerals and natural resources. Moreover, it has an exceptional cultural, historic, archeological and mythological heritage at the same time. Chalkidiki Peninsula is the southern promontory of Macedonia reaching the Aegean Sea which is one of the most frequented tourist resorts in Greece. The three regions of the rather small but unique peninsula are Kassandra, Sithonia, and the narrow promontory of Aegean Oros embedded in the sea. There are mountains with rich flora stretching over the three peninsulas, Casandrino, Thanos and Athos Mountains.
According to the great famous father of historiography, Hesiod, the war between the giants and gods took place on the Kassandra Peninsula in mythological times. The enormous giants having superhuman character desired the power of the Olympian deities but after the gods joining forces, their attack was repulsed in long recurrent battles. The clash has appeared as a rich abundant theme in Greek artworks up to our times. The region of Chalkidiki is varied due to its wide ranging forests, barren cliffs and canyons, rich vineyards, orchards and flower gardens, diverse and varied colored coast, and peaceful and deep bays.

Nikodim Tsarknias (born 1942 in Aridaia) is an ethnic Macedonian Orthodox Christian priest who originates from Aegean region of Macedonia. In 1973 he was an ordained as a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, but was expelled for misconduct in 1991 after declaring his Macedonian identity. He opposed what he saw as an attempt to eradicate ethnic Macedonian religious customs in the Florina (Lerin) diocese region of Greece (Aegean Macedonia) Nikodim Tsarknias came to Toronto Canada in 1993 and on October 18 of the same year he gave an interview of his struggle to preserve and protect our Macedonian identity in Aegean Macedonia.

The Vinča culture, also known as Turdaș culture or Turdaș-Vinča culture, is a Neolithic archaeological culture in Central Europe and Southeastern Europe, dated to the period 5700–4500 BCE. Named for its type site, Vinča-Belo Brdo, a large tell settlement discovered by Serbian archaeologist Miloje Vasić in 1908, it represents the material remains of a prehistoric society mainly distinguished by its settlement pattern and ritual behaviour. The Vinča culture, also known as Turdaș culture or Turdaș-Vinča culture, is a Neolithic archaeological culture in Central Europe and Southeastern Europe, dated to the period 5700–4500 BCE. Named for its type site, Vinča-Belo Brdo, a large tell settlement discovered by Serbian archaeologist Miloje Vasić in 1908, it represents the material remains of a prehistoric society mainly distinguished by its settlement pattern and ritual behaviour. Farming technology first introduced to the region during the First Temperate Neolithic was developed further by the Vinča culture, fuelling a population boom and producing some of the largest settlements in prehistoric Europe. These settlements maintained a high degree of cultural uniformity through the long-distance exchange of ritual items, but were probably not politically unified. Various styles of zoomorphic and anthropomorphic figurines are hallmarks of the culture, as are the Vinča symbols, which some conjecture to be an early form of proto-writing. Though not conventionally considered part of the Chalcolithic or "Copper Age", the Vinča culture provides the earliest known example of copper metallurgy.
