Macedonia i/ˌmæsᵻˈdoʊniə/ is a geographical and historical region of the Balkan peninsula in southeastern Europe. Its boundaries have changed considerably over time, but nowadays the region is considered to include parts of six Balkan countries: Greece, the Republic of Macedonia, Bulgaria, Albania, Serbia and Kosovo. It covers approximately 67,000 square kilometres (25,869 sq mi) and has a population of 4.76 million.
Its oldest known settlements date back approximately 9,000 years. From the middle of the 4th century BC, the Kingdom of Macedon became the dominant power on the Balkan peninsula; since then Macedonia has had a diverse history.

Tim Judah is a reporter and political analyst for The Economist, and has written several books, mainly focussing on Serbia and Kosovo.
A graduate of the London School of Economics and of the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University, he worked for the BBC before becoming the Balkans correspondent for The Times and The Economist. During the Kosovo war he broadcast widely and wrote for the New York Review of Books,The Observer, The Sunday Telegraph and The Guardian Weekend magazine.
Judah has reported from numerous places, for a wide variety of newspapers, and other outlets. Apart from the Balkans, Judah has reported from countries including El Salvador, Iraq, Afghanistan and Uganda. In 2009, Judah was a Senior Visiting Fellow at the European Institute of the London School of Economics. Recently, Judah has also written highly praised articles relating to the War in Donbass.
Judah is married to writer and publisher Rosie Whitehouse and has five children, one of whom is the journalist Ben Judah.

Nikodim Tsarknias (born 1942 in Aridaia) is an ethnic Macedonian Orthodox Christian priest who originates from Aegean region of Macedonia. In 1973 he was an ordained as a member of the Greek Orthodox Church, but was expelled for misconduct in 1991 after declaring his Macedonian identity. He opposed what he saw as an attempt to eradicate ethnic Macedonian religious customs in the Florina (Lerin) diocese region of Greece (Aegean Macedonia) Nikodim Tsarknias came to Toronto Canada in 1993 and on October 18 of the same year he gave an interview of his struggle to preserve and protect our Macedonian identity in Aegean Macedonia.
The Vinča culture, also known as Turdaș culture or Turdaș-Vinča culture, is a Neolithic archaeological culture in Central Europe and Southeastern Europe, dated to the period 5700–4500 BCE.
