Artur Pawlowski and Jim Blake on Insight - June 22, 2010
Pastor Art Pawlowski of Calgary Street Church joins us today along with Jim Blake of "Concerned Christians Canada" to let us know how the "March For Jesus" event went on the weekend. We'll also find out the latest in the controversy over the refusal of the Calgary Stampede to allow Calgary Street Church to participate in this year's Stampede parade. Some Say Calgary Street Church shouldn't have broken the rules by handing out tracts ... others argue it's a form of religious discrimination. Either way, Pastor Art Pawlowski is determined to continue feeding the poor and homeless, preaching the gospel -- with or without loudspeakers -- no matter what roadblocks are in the way. Is his approach biblical or should he gear it down a few notches? Your calls and e-mails are welcome!

TRANSCRIPT:
Greetings, friends. I'm Jim Blake and I welcome you to this month's edition of Postcards from the Village. I want to get a bit philosophical today and talk about a question I've been hearing in Unity as long as I can remember: Are we being true to the teachings of Charles and Myrtle Fillmore? Are we teaching the same Truth our founders taught? Or have we watered down the message to get a bigger audience? Are we following the Fillmores’ example of prosperity consciousness and stewardship of the Village? Or are we all about the money now? If I may, I would like to suggest that we're being absolutely true to the Fillmores—maybe more so now than in a long time.
You see we believe that it's possible to stick to their teachings at the same time we reach a broad audience. That's what they did. Their ministry was strongest when they were boldly sharing their spiritual discoveries with farmers and businessmen and women who couldn't even vote. It's the only way Unity can grow!
The most common comment or question I get is: What are we doing to grow Unity? With a close second being: When can I live at the Village? Most of us didn't get interested in Unity and New Thought because we read something by Charles Fillmore. Maybe you read Daily Word or picked up a book by Wayne Dyer. Maybe a friend invited you to church. My friend and colleague Reverend Mark Fuss likes to say, “Most people are attracted to Unity not because of the teachings but because of the consciousness, environment, and sense of family created by our teachings. This is why so many of us feel like we have the feeling of coming home.” The path to and through the deepest understanding of the principles has been and always will be a gradual process.
What we publish or offer online is Unity. It is the teachings, but it might be phrased in a simpler, more relatable way so we can help someone take their first steps into a new way of thinking. Some of the prayers of Silent Unity emphasize our divine nature, definitely a Fillmore teaching. While others address God the Father, and Fillmore said that too. I'll admit, sometimes we walk a tightrope to reach that broad audience of people who are spiritual but not religious without compromising the fundamental Unity teachings. There will always be a healthy tension between Innovation and tradition.
Our Daily Word Editor Teresa Burton says the pillars of tradition have to be strong in order to innovate around them. She sees Daily Word as one of those pillars and she's happy to stand in that tradition while we also come up with new ideas and new things to try. We can do both! We are all united by the Fillmores and their brilliant spiritual insights. Nobody wants to leave that rich legacy behind.
At the same time, we are moving forward. Principles don't change but human life in each century does. Wouldn't Charles love the internet? Wouldn't Myrtle enjoy the freedom that women have today? They were all about growth and change, about transformation.
We all love the Fillmores and there's no greater challenge than trying to live as consciously as they did—to be that awake. They left us with spiritual challenges we can work on for a lifetime and I'm grateful to them every time I walk across this beautiful campus. Their legacy is precious and it's up to us to steward it carefully into a new century they couldn't even have imagined. Thank you and bless you. Namaste.
