What storage solutions are available for small spaces?

The golden rule for small space storage ideas is to make use of all the under-utilised spaces that exist in every home – if you’re tight on storage, don’t neglect any nooks and crannies. Forgotten-about spaces like the tops of kitchen cabinets and under the bed provide excellent storage opportunities. Clever storage ideas for utilising such spaces include free-standing baskets, underbed storage boxes and purpose designed racks. You can also invest in furniture that doubles as storage by offering hidden storage solutions – look out for ottomans, divan beds and benches that lift up to reveal concealed storage. On a larger scale, storage ideas such as lift-up beds also offer ample hidden storage that is a god-send for bulkier items like blankets or out-of-season clothing. Attractive boxes and baskets can be used for stowing away smaller items that can easily become clutter and are great solutions for bathroom storage. Gone are the days of cardboard boxes and plastic crates – today’s storage ideas include units and boxes, in an array of colours, patterns and materials, and are designed to be discreet and complement your decor.

Should I choose free-standing furniture or built-in wardrobes for my bedroom?

For most rooms, fitted furniture will offer the most efficient of storage solutions. As well as providing generous storage space, fitted wardrobe options will lend a sleek and uniform appearance to rooms of any proportion. With built-in storage, particularly modular storage styles, you also have the advantage of fitting it out internally (think drawer partitions, shoe racks, storage boxes, vacuum storage bags, tie racks etc) while appearing totally discreet on the outside. Just bear in mind that fitted wardrobes will reduce the flexibility of the room and limit your ability to alter your layout later. Freestanding wardrobes, on the other hand, can add character and give you more flexible storage ideas for your space. In a period home, the alcoves on either side of the chimney breast may as well have been made for wardrobes and bookcases. Whilst you should pair your wardrobe with complementary chests of drawers and bedside tables, there is no need for them to match exactly!

Should I convert a spare bedroom into a walk-in wardrobe?

Walk-in wardrobes or dressing rooms are the ultimate luxury in storage solutions, and if you have a small single bedroom or unloved office space then it can be a great opportunity to create your dream wardrobe. Not got an extra room? You might be able to carve a walk in closet out of your bedroom; long or L-shaped bedrooms in particular can easily be divided to create a separate clothes storage space. When designing your walk-in wardrobe it’s important to account for the different kinds of clothes storage solutions you will need before you begin designing – consider rails and shelves for hanging and folded garments, racks of storage for shoes and bags, and cabinets or drawers for smaller items such as jewellery and makeup. If you will be sharing your wardrobe with your other half, don’t forget to account for their needs as well! A walk-in wardrobe will afford you more space than your existing storage units but you need to keep enough floor space clear to allow you to navigate easily around your clothes. Finally, using sliding doors can allow you to decrease the total space needed to create the wardrobe of your dreams.
