Their savior is Darlene Arviso, born and raised on the Reservation, who drives her precious cargo - a tanker truck filled with water - to make monthly deliveries to 250 families. Lee Cowan reports.

FARMINGTON, N.M - AMERICA:
An 11-year-old girl who was kidnapped from the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, launching a massive search, was found dead Tuesday. Authorities had been searching by air and ground for Ashlynne Mike, a Navajo fifth-grader who was abducted by a man believed to be a stranger Monday afternoon, FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said. The girl’s body was found Tuesday morning in Shiprock, near a rock formation that the town is named for, said Jesse Delmar, the tribe’s public safety division director.
“We were very hopeful that we would find her in good shape,” Delmar said. “We found her, but it didn’t turn out well.”
Her family has been notified, Delmar said. An Amber Alert said the missing girl was last seen on Navajo Route 36 and that her kidnapper was driving a maroon van. The search for the girl included federal, tribal, state and county officers on the ground as well as a New Mexico State Police helicopter, Fisher said.
Authorities didn’t immediately say whether the suspect had been found or what they were doing to find him. He was described as Native American, but no other details were released.

The 27,000-square-mile reservation straddling parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah has an extremely high abundance of many energy resources — particularly coal. That coal is what's burned to provide much of the Southwest with electricity, and it creates jobs for the Navajo. But the mining and burning have also caused environmental degradation, serious health issues, and displacement.

John Sidney McCain III (born August 29, 1936) is the senior United States Senator from Arizona. He was the Republican presidential nominee in the 2008 United States election.
McCain followed his father and grandfather, both four-star admirals, into the United States Navy, graduating from the U.S. Naval Academy in 1958. He became a naval aviator, flying ground-attack aircraft from aircraft carriers. During the Vietnam War, he was almost killed in the 1967 USS Forrestal fire. In October 1967, while on a bombing mission over Hanoi, he was shot down, seriously injured, and captured by the North Vietnamese. He was a prisoner of war until 1973. McCain experienced episodes of torture, and refused an out-of-sequence early repatriation offer. His war wounds left him with lifelong physical limitations.
He retired from the Navy as a captain in 1981 and moved to Arizona, where he entered politics. Elected to the U.S. House of Representatives in 1982, he served two terms, and was then elected to the U.S. Senate in 1986, winning re-election easily four times, most recently in 2010. While generally adhering to conservative principles, McCain at times has had a media reputation as a "maverick" for his willingness to disagree with his party on certain issues. After being investigated and largely exonerated in a political influence scandal of the 1980s as a member of the Keating Five, he made campaign finance reform one of his signature concerns, which eventually led to the passage of the McCain-Feingold Act in 2002. He is also known for his work towards restoring diplomatic relations with Vietnam in the 1990s, and for his belief that the war in Iraq should be fought to a successful conclusion. McCain has chaired the Senate Commerce Committee, opposed spending that he considered to be pork barrel, and played a key role in alleviating a crisis over judicial nominations.

The 27,000-square-mile reservation straddling parts of Arizona, New Mexico, and Utah has an extremely high abundance of many energy resources — particularly coal. That coal is what's burned to provide much of the Southwest with electricity, and it creates jobs for the Navajo. FARMINGTON, N.M - AMERICA:
An 11-year-old girl who was kidnapped from the Navajo Nation in New Mexico, launching a massive search, was found dead Tuesday. Authorities had been searching by air and ground for Ashlynne Mike, a Navajo fifth-grader who was abducted by a man believed to be a stranger Monday afternoon, FBI spokesman Frank Fisher said. The girl’s body was found Tuesday morning in Shiprock, near a rock formation that the town is named for, said Jesse Delmar, the tribe’s public safety division director.
“We were very hopeful that we would find her in good shape,” Delmar said. “We found her, but it didn’t turn out well.”
Her family has been notified, Delmar said. An Amber Alert said the missing girl was last seen on Navajo Route 36 and that her kidnapper was driving a maroon van. The search for the girl included federal, tribal, state and county officers on the ground as well as a New Mexico State Police helicopter, Fisher said.
Authorities didn’t immediately say whether the suspect had been found or what they were doing to find him. He was described as Native American, but no other details were released.

Hours had passed since the man had talked the girl and her brother into his van while they were playing about a quarter-mile from their home after school.
She begged to be taken home, but he led her away from her 9-year-old brother, to an even more remote spot, where he removed her clothes and sexually assaulted her. Then he hit her twice in the head with a tire iron and left her for dead before driving off and leaving the boy as well, all alone, as night fell.
Details about the final moments of Ashlynne Mike's life began to emerge Wednesday from court documents and family members, as the suspect, Tom Begaye, a 27-year-old Navajo man from a neighboring community, appeared before a federal magistrate on murder and kidnapping charges.
A criminal complaint outlined the crime based on statements Begaye made to investigators after his arrest.
