U.S.Fired employee kills co-worker, self at Houston-area company
A man dismissed last month from a Houston-area transportation company stormed into the facility and opened fire on Wednesday, fatally shooting a former co-worker and injuring two others before turning the gun on himself, saying his life had been ruined, sheriff's officials said. The man was armed with a shotgun and a pistol when he arrived at the Knight Transportation office in Katy, about 20 miles west of Houston, according to Harris County Sheriff Ron Hickman. The man was heard by workers saying something to the effect of "you all ruined my life" as he walked through the building, and may have been looking for someone, sheriff's spokesman Ralph Gonzales said.

World'Catastrophic wildfires' force thousands to flee in Canada
The Canadian city of Fort McMurray remained under threat from catastrophic wildfires Wednesday, authorities warned, after more than 80,000 residents were forced to flee the raging inferno sweeping through Alberta's oil sands region. "This fire is absolutely devastating," said Prime Minister Justin Trudeau. Alberta emergency services announced shortly before midnight Tuesday that all of Fort McMurray, a city of about 100,000, was under a mandatory evacuation order.

Tesla pops 4% on results, production outlook
Tesla Motors (TSLA) on Wednesday posted quarterly results that met Wall Street's expectations and gave a bullish outlook for vehicle production on the strength of demand for its upcoming Model 3. Analysts expected Tesla to report a loss of 58 cents per share on $1.6 billion in revenue, according to a Thomson Reuters consensus estimate. Despite recent capacity concerns, Tesla said it is "on track" for production and delivery of its Model 3 mass-market car in late 2017.

The Connecticut woman who underwent a face transplant five years ago after being attacked by a chimpanzee is back in a Boston hospital after doctors discovered her body is rejecting tissue from the transplant. Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, director of plastic surgery transplantation at Brigham and Women's Hospital, said Wednesday that Charla Nash is experiencing a "moderate rejection episode" and the transplant is not in jeopardy. FBI: Man admits to contaminating food at Michigan stores
A man is in custody after he admitted to spraying a contaminant that officials believe contained mouse poison on unpackaged food at several Michigan grocery stores, authorities said. An investigation indicated the man sprayed a mixture of hand sanitizer, water and mouse poison on produce and open food bars at three Ann Arbor stores within the last couple of weeks, the FBI announced Tuesday.

This Supreme Court Case Could Essentially Legalize Bribery, Legal Analysts Warn
Last year, former Virginia Gov. Bob McDonnell was convicted of 11 charges of conspiracy, extortion and bribery after prosecutors accused the Republican governor of accepting $177,000 in luxury gifts and money to promote a dietary supplement company. In exchange for said funds, prosecutors said McDonnell traded "meetings to connect Williams with state officials, a luncheon Williams was allowed to throw at the governor's mansion to help launch the product, and a guest list Williams was allowed to shape at a mansion reception meant for health care leaders," Washington Post reported. While this might seem like a clear case of a public official abusing their office for personal profit, the Supreme Court seems poised to accept the former governor's argument that the "access" he provided was not an "official action," and thus not a bribe.

The Obama administration is revising a federal rule that allows wind-energy companies to operate high-speed turbines for up to 30 years, even if means killing or injuring thousands of federally protected bald and golden eagles. Under the plan announced Wednesday, wind companies and other power providers could kill or injure up to 4,200 bald eagles a year without penalty — nearly four times the current limit. Golden eagles could only be killed if companies take steps to minimize the losses, for instance, by retrofitting power poles to reduce the risk of electrocution.

By Dave McKinney CHICAGO (Reuters) - Dozens of Illinois social service providers, starved of cash by the state’s long-running budget stalemate, sued Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner and six statewide agencies on Wednesday, seeking more than $100 million for unpaid work since July. The coalition of 64 organizations, calling itself Pay Now Illinois, contended that Rauner’s June 2015 veto of appropriation bills amounted to an unlawful impairment of the their constitutional right to seek a legal remedy for non-payment by the state of their various contracts. “We’ve had to deal with this uncertainty now for the 11th month, over 300 days, without being paid,” said Andrea Durbin, chairwoman of Illinois Pay Now.
