Flying fox colonies are under pressure in Australia due to loss of habitat, a negative public perception and extreme heat events that have wiped out entire colonies. The Australian Bat Clinic and many other wildlife groups in eastern Australia are currently inundated with baby bats that have been rescued following the latest tragedy which saw thousands of bats lose their lives due to the heat.
When a bat mother dies, often their young are still attached and will not survive without the right care. Bat carers play a vital role in not only retrieving suffering bats, but rehabilitating them until they can be released back into the wild.
When baby bats first enter rehabilitation it can be traumatising for them as they have just been separated from their mothers to which they have formed strong bonds. Bat carers have to ensure that the baby bats not only are well fed, but that they are nurtured and feel safe in their temporary new home. Providing affection to the bats is a necessity.
The teats represent their mother’s nipple, and this makes them feel more comfortable, as does the security of the blankets which they are often snugly wrapped in.
The bats will remain at the Australian Bat Clinic until they are old enough to be released.

Over the years, bats have gotten a pretty bad reputation. Halloween doesn't really help the cause either. Bats don't conjure up cuddly images in your mind the way kittens and puppies always do — until now. The Tolga Bat Hospital in Atherton, Australia, is showing the tiny creatures in an adorable new light. The hospital rescues and releases hundreds of baby fruit bats each year, thanks in part to the volunteers who travel hundreds of miles to the nonprofit center. About 300 bat pups are orphaned in the area annually, usually when their mother becomes too sick to feed them or they fall ill to tick paralysis.
The care for the winged babies is very similar to that of human babies. They drink milk from a bottle, love to be swaddled in a blanket, and are bathed in a sink. After a bath, baby bats also have their fur combed. In addition to caring for babies, Tolga also rehabilitates injured adults. Some bats even come here to retire after a long career at a zoo. Here's a travel tip: If you find yourself in Far North Queensland, you can actually visit the little guys.
The hospital, which offers tours, charges $18 for adults and $10 for kids.

This is Jeddah. He loves to be tickled, petted and scratched. Look at that blissful face.
Jeddah is a Grey-Headed Flying-Fox.
I usually clip my videos quite short when it's all one behaviour being shown, but this bliss went on and on and I just couldn't bring myself to deprive you of any of the lengthy joy.
I particularly loved the yawny and sniffy bits about half way through. And I love the curl of the tongue as he yawns.
This bat was not releasable due to injuries. He is in care with a vaccinated and licensed bat carer.
This bat is not a pet. He was a baby hand raised for release, and became an education animal.
He is used to being handled. He actively solicits attention and cuddles.
There have been suggestions that this bat is terrified and the squeaks are not cute. This bat is in bliss and is able to get away from the carer at any time. He is choosing to be stroked. He solicits attention.

Trish Wimberley looks after hundreds of orphaned baby bats and rears them until they can be released into the wild. It's a tireless, never ending job which keeps her awake all hours (she apparently went 3 nights without sleeping once). A typical day may include feeding (the food is about $1000 a week), health checks, doing their laundry (the dryer and washing machine electricity bill costs up to $8000 every 3 or 4 months!), bat transportation for release -- everything they need in order to survive. You'd think she'd need an army of people to help but she makes do with only a few loyal volunteers. It just goes to show, motherhood can transcend between all species and Trish is happy playing that role to assist a creature that is vital to the Australian ecosystem.
This video only shows a small section of the hospital. As the bats get ready to return to the wild they are moved to soft release exhibits.

Be inspired by this rare footage of an adult fruit bat sweeping in to the rescue of her lost baby bat. The baby bat was found lost and stranded almost two hours prior to this reunion it was amazing to see that the parent was around the area and was so quick to pick up on her baby's calls for help and fly around us. It took her about 2 minutes to get to her baby as she flew in circles trying to accurately pinpoint where her baby was and negotiate her way to him. We stayed a distance away as we watched in excitement hoping for the reunion to be a success.
We thank Mr Joel Guglietta for his genuine concern and eagerness to help us in ensuring that the baby bat is safely contained prior to our arrival. Every animal is important to us and we hope this video will highlight how wonderful these animals are and how a little help can go a long way in making sure that they stay safe.

I love bats. Found this little guy on a post in the neighbor's parking bay. Took some photos then picked him up so I could put him in a tree safe from the local cats. I couldn't tell at the time but in the photos you I could see he had a small wound on his wing and a cold in one eye. I hope he gets better.

Bat

Bat Orphans
Trish Wimberley looks after hundreds of orphaned baby bats and rears them until they can be released into the wild. It's a tireless, never ending job which keeps her awake all hours (she apparently went 3 nights without sleeping once). A typical day may include feeding (the food is about $1000 a week), health checks, doing their laundry (the dryer and washing machine electricity bill costs up to $8000 every 3 or 4 months!), bat transportation for release -- everything they need in order to survive. You'd think she'd need an army of people to help but she makes do with only a few loyal volunteers. ACRES Wildlife Rescue Team: Reuniting a lost baby bat with his mother!
Be inspired by this rare footage of an adult fruit bat sweeping in to the rescue of her lost baby bat. The baby bat was found lost and stranded almost two hours prior to this reunion it was amazing to see that the parent was around the area and was so quick to pick up on her baby's calls for help and fly around us. It took her about 2 minutes to get to her baby as she flew in circles trying to accurately pinpoint where her baby was and negotiate her way to him. We stayed a distance away as we watched in excitement hoping for the reunion to be a success. We thank Mr Joel Guglietta for his genuine concern and eagerness to help us in ensuring that the baby bat is safely contained prior to our arrival. I love bats. Found this little guy on a post in the neighbor's parking bay. Took some photos then picked him up so I could put him in a tree safe from the local cats. I couldn't tell at the time but in the photos you I could see he had a small wound on his wing and a cold in one eye. I hope he gets better. Flying fox colonies are under pressure in Australia due to loss of habitat, a negative public perception and extreme heat events that have wiped out entire colonies. The Australian Bat Clinic and many other wildlife groups in eastern Australia are currently inundated with baby bats that have been rescued following the latest tragedy which saw thousands of bats lose their lives due to the heat.
When a bat mother dies, often their young are still attached and will not survive without the right care. Bat carers play a vital role in not only retrieving suffering bats, but rehabilitating them until they can be released back into the wild.
When baby bats first enter rehabilitation it can be traumatising for them as they have just been separated from their mothers to which they have formed strong bonds. Bat carers have to ensure that the baby bats not only are well fed, but that they are nurtured and feel safe in their temporary new home. Providing affection to the bats is a necessity.
The teats represent their mother’s nipple, and this makes them feel more comfortable, as does the security of the blankets which they are often snugly wrapped in.
The bats will remain at the Australian Bat Clinic until they are old enough to be released.

Bats don't conjure up cuddly images in your mind the way kittens and puppies always do — until now. The Tolga Bat Hospital in Atherton, Australia, is showing the tiny creatures in an adorable new light. The hospital rescues and releases hundreds of baby fruit bats each year, thanks in part to the volunteers who travel hundreds of miles to the nonprofit center. About 300 bat pups are orphaned in the area annually, usually when their mother becomes too sick to feed them or they fall ill to tick paralysis.
The care for the winged babies is very similar to that of human babies. They drink milk from a bottle, love to be swaddled in a blanket, and are bathed in a sink. After a bath, baby bats also have their fur combed. In addition to caring for babies, Tolga also rehabilitates injured adults. Some bats even come here to retire after a long career at a zoo. Here's a travel tip: If you find yourself in Far North Queensland, you can actually visit the little guys.

Flying fox colonies are under pressure in Australia due to loss of habitat, a negative public perception and extreme heat events that have wiped out entire colonies. The Australian Bat Clinic and many other wildlife groups in eastern Australia are currently inundated with baby bats that have been rescued following the latest tragedy which saw thousands of bats lose their lives due to the heat.
When a bat mother dies, often their young are still attached and will not survive without the right care. Bat carers play a vital role in not only retrieving suffering bats, but rehabilitating them until they can be released back into the wild.
When baby bats first enter rehabilitation it can be traumatising for them as they have just been separated from their mothers to which they have formed strong bonds. Bat carers have to ensure that the baby bats not only are well fed, but that they are nurtured and feel safe in their temporary new home. Providing affection to the bats is a necessity.
The teats represent their mother’s nipple, and this makes them feel more comfortable, as does the security of the blankets which they are often snugly wrapped in.
The bats will remain at the Australian Bat Clinic until they are old enough to be released.
