Cuba will benefit in many aspects after the United States has removed the country from its terrorism blacklist as part of the efforts to clear a major obstacle to restoring diplomatic relations between Washington and Havana, said a former Cuban diplomat in Havana on Friday.
Commenting on the move by the United States, Former Cuban Foreign Service officer Carlos Alzugaray said: "In the first place we shouldn't have been in that list, ever, because Cuba has never supported terrorist activities. As President Raul Castro has said it is Cuba who has been the victim of terrorist's activities."
"It means that Cuba can operate more safely now. That our citizens are not going to be subject to harassment because they come from a terrorist country. That our companies will be able to operate normally with banks. So there are a number of benefits. And a very important benefit has to do with the internal workings of the United States system," said Alzugaray.
The United States put Cuba in its terrorism blacklist together with Iran, Syria and Sudan in 1982 on account of Havana supporting Latin America's armed guerrilla movements.
The inclusion of Cuba in the blacklist hampered Cuba from doing business with some companies and has become a major sticking point in making concrete steps towards restoring diplomatic ties after more than five decades of hostility.

YOUR DESCRIPTION HAS REACHED THE LIMIT OF CHARACTERS ALLOWED AND WAS CUT. WASHINGTON (AP) -- More than a half century of Cold War and lingering enmity came to an abrupt but quiet end on Monday as the United States and Cuba restored full diplomatic relations. The new era began with little fanfare when an agreement between the two nations to resume normal ties on July 20 came into force just after midnight Sunday and the diplomatic missions of each country were upgraded from interests sections to embassies. When clocks struck 12:00 in Washington and Havana, they tolled a knell for policy approaches spawned and hardened over the five decades since President John F. Kennedy first tangled with youthful revolutionary Fidel Castro over Soviet expansion in the Americas. Without ceremony in the pre-dawn hours, maintenance workers were to hang the Cuban flag in the lobby of the State Department alongside those of other nations with which the U.S. has diplomatic relations. The historic shift will be publicly memorialized later Monday when Cuban officials formally inaugurate their embassy in Washington and Cuba's blue, red and white-starred flag will fly for the first time since the countries severed ties in 1961. Secretary of State John Kerry will then meet his Cuban counterpart, Bruno Rodriguez, and address reporters at a joint news conference. The U.S. Interests Section in Havana plans to announce its upgrade to embassy status in a written statement on Monday, but the Stars and Stripes will not fly at the mission until Kerry visits in August for a ceremonial flag-raising. And yet, though normalization has taken center stage in the U.S.-Cuba relationship, there remains a deep ideological gulf between the nations and many issues still to resolve. Among them: thorny disputes such as over mutual claims for economic reparations, Havana's insistence on the end of the 53-year-old trade embargo and U.S. calls for Cuba to improve on human rights and democracy. Some U.S. lawmakers, including several prominent Republican presidential candidates, have vowed not to repeal the embargo and pledged to roll back Obama's moves on Cuba. Still, Monday's events cap a remarkable change of course in U.S. policy toward the communist island under President Barack Obama, who had sought rapprochement with Cuba since he first took office and has progressively loosened restrictions on travel and remittances to the island. Obama's efforts at engagement were frustrated for years by Cuba's imprisonment of U.S. Agency for International Development contractor Alan Gross on espionage charges. But months of secret negotiations led in December to Gross's release, along with a number of political prisoners in Cuba and the remaining members of a Cuban spy ring jailed in the United States. On Dec. 17, Obama and Cuban President Raul Castro announced they would resume full diplomatic relations. Declaring the long-standing policy a failure that had not achieved any of its intended results, Obama declared that the U.S. could not keep doing the same thing and expect a change. Thus, he said work would begin apace on normalization. That process dragged on until the U.S. removed Cuba from its list of state sponsors of terrorism in late May and then bogged down over issues of U.S. diplomats' access to ordinary Cubans. On July 1, however, the issues were resolved and the U.S. and Cuba exchanged diplomatic notes agreeing that the date for the restoration of full relations would be July 20. "It's a historic moment," said longtime Cuban diplomat and analyst Carlos Alzugaray. "The significance of opening the embassies is that trust and respect that you can see, both sides treating the other with trust and respect," he said. "That doesn't mean there aren't going to be conflicts there are bound to be conflicts but the way that you treat the conflict has completely changed." Cuba's ceremony at the stately 16th Street mansion in Washington that has been operating as an interests section under the auspices of the Swiss embassy will be attended by some 500 guests, including a 30-member delegation of diplomatic, cultural and other leaders from the Caribbean nation, headed by Foreign Minister Rodriguez. The U.S. will be represented at the event by Assistant Secretary of State for Western Hemisphere Affairs Roberta Jacobson, who led U.S. negotiators in six months of talks leading to the July 1 announcement, and Jeffrey DeLaurentis, the chief of the U.S. Interests Section in Havana who will now become charge d'affaires. Although the Interests Section in Havana won't see the pomp and circumstance of a flag-raising on Monday, workers there have already drilled holes on the exterior to hang signage flown in from the U.S., and arranged to print new business cards and letterhead that say "Embassy" instead of "Interests Section." What for years was a lonely flagpole outside the glassy six-story edifice on Havana's seafront Malecon boulevard recently got a rehab, complete with a pa

Business Insider recently sent three reporters to Havana, Cuba, to experience the city as tourists. Instead of booking rooms in one of the state-run hotels, we decided to rent a three-bedroom apartment through Airbnb, which recently started offering accommodations in Havana.
This is what it was like to stay in the apartment, which was located in the Vedado neighborhood, just steps from the Hotel Habana Libre.
We'll have lots of stories about our adventures on the island, which you'll be able to find here.

American businesses are learning that while Cuba offers an investment potential, the process of doing business in the island nation is a long and challenging one. Susan Segal, President and CEO of Americas Society/Council of the Americas spoke at the Inaugural Cuba Opportunity Summit in New York, where she said it will take time before businesses can invest in any kind of scaled way. She told TheStreet's Rhonda Schaffler that two key steps to quicken the process would be removing Cuba from the State Department's list of state sponsors of terrorism and lifting the trade embargo. She says the tourism, technology and telecom sectors are currently looking for investments in Cuba, and she's hearing that investment companies are working to create special funds to invest in Cuba.

The United States and Cuba re-opened embassies in each other's capitals on Monday, restoring full diplomatic relations for the first time in 54 years. No formal celebration is planned Monday for the U.S. Interests Section in Havana, instead, a flag-raising ceremony will take place in August, presided over by Secretary of State John Kerry. The restored diplomatic relations between the countries means diplomats from both the U.S. and Cuba have more freedom to travel and more citizens that fit within 12 pre-approved travel groups can visit Cuba without getting a special license from the Treasury. Those groups under exception include those traveling for family visits, journalistic activity, religious purposes, humanitarian projects, public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions and others. Travel for pure tourism is still prohibited. More relaxed restrictions also means U.S. financial firms can work with Cuban banks and some exports are now approved. However, a U.S. economic embargo against Cuba will remain in place.

Cuba is the pearl of the Caribbean Sea. Thanks to the colonial past, Havana - the capital - has plenty of palaces, nice mansions, cathedrals, strong forts, and shady alleys. On the streets the automobiles of the 50’s from United States create a huge contrast with the coaches. Jonny here, right now I'm in Havana, and in this short film I'm going to explain a little about tourism in Cuba.
Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars.
But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you a sense of stepping back in time.
Here in Havana you should enjoy a tour of the cities main sites, an evening at the Bueno Vista Social Club, and trip to one of her many museums. You'll need at least a couple of days, its a very fun place.
In two weeks time Trinidad will celebrate its 500 anniversary. Founded only a few years after Christopher Columbus discovered the America's, the town shot to prominence in the 19th century as one of the world's largest exporters of sugar. With its fine plazas, palaces and churches, and its famous cobbled streets lined by colourful houses, it developed into masterpiece of colonial Caribbean architecture. So well preserved is the town that in 1988 it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status and today forms an important part of most cultural trips to the country.
From Trinidad you might continue east to visit the revolutionary centre of Santiago de Cuba, or head west to enjoy the amazing landscapes around Vinales. Or you might like to do something completely different.
Of course there are plenty of other things to enjoy in Cuba besides the cultural highlights Trinidad and Havana offer. Cuba is blessed with beautiful countryside through which to can go hiking, cycling and horse back riding. Right now I am at a government ranch called La Guabina, in Pinar del Rio province. Each year Wild Frontiers takes the place over to run a horse riding tour of the area and horse riding is primarily what I have come here to do. But if riding is not your thing, from here you can also go on wonderful walks, go fishing or boating on one of the regions many lakes, indulge in some bird watching, or just relax away from the more chaotic life urban Cuba has to offer.
And finally of course there are beaches. As an island over a 1000 kilometres in length, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, there are hundreds of wonderful beaches just waiting to be enjoyed. And in our experience, Cayo Levisa, where I am now, is one of the best.
Relatively close to Havana, and relatively small in size, Cayo Levisa offers all the usual activities you'd associate with a modern beach resort, like sailing, fishing snorkeling and diving, but is small enough to not have you feeling drowned by mass tourism. As with a number of other similar locations, Cayo Levisa offers a great way to round off your trip to Cuba.
Of course a cultural adventure to Cuba will not be for everyone. With luxury accommodation pretty much non-existent, transport pretty basic, the cuisine though in places surprisingly good, in others rather plain, and a service level that is at best eclectic, those looking for a high end experience will almost certainly be disappointed here.
But if you're the kind of traveller that is interested in seeing a country that hasn't really changed in the last 50 years, a place that has not been overwhelmed by all the trappings of modern consumerism, and are happy to go with the flow in one of the world's last remaining communist countries, then here in Cuba you will find one of the most friendly, authentic, historically interesting and culturally rich places in the whole of Latin America.
My advice is to come soon before it all changes.

Travel video about destination Cuba.
Basking in the Caribbean sun, the island of Cuba lies between sun and socialism, rumba and revolution. Havana is the capital. In 1553, the Spanish conquerors designated Havana’s harbour as a collection point for ships loaded with gold and silver from the new Spanish colonies and named the settlement, San Cristobal De La Habana.La Bodeguita Del Medio was once Hemmingway`s local and nowhere else is the ‘Mojito’ mixed better: three year old white rum, lime juice, soda, sugar, ice and mint. Whether it be the Teatro Marti, the Old Tobacco Factory, the famous Bacardi house, or the Floridita Bar, everywhere there is a feeling of nostalgia. When the Daiquiri is served, one almost expects Fidel Castro to be sitting at the next table. Pinar Del Rio is a small but busy town in which the Red Star and portraits of Che Guevara are displayed for all to see. In the old town, colourful houses with beautiful pillared corridors demonstrate the former wealth of the country’s independent tobacco growers. Time means little here. While observing life on the streets, one begins to think in the same relaxed tempo of the leisurely-smoked cigars. A visit to a tobacco factory is a must. Cuba’s cigars are world famous. Together with sugar, tobacco is the country’s most important export. The oldest geological formation in Cuba are the Mogotes, well-weathered limestone peaks which, supported by pillars, once covered a large complex of caves. Over many decades, subterranean rivers flooded the earth below and thus created these gigantic grottos. On seven manmade islands in the centre of the Cienaga De Zapata National Park, is the Indian village of Guama. This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation offers an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Rich green tropical forests, tobacco country at the foot of mysterious mountain caves, humid tropical swamps, history, cigars and rum. Cuba is a colourful cocktail

Trinidad is full of palaces built by the sugar barons, while Santa Clara is the town of the legendary revolutionary, Che Guevara. Guama shows us an Indian village and a crocodile farm, Varadero offers white, sandy beaches shaded by large palm trees and luxury hotels. In the Tropicana, the band is moving to a heartwarming music. In the famous bars, as the Floridita or the Bodaguita, we can remember Hemingway, and drink from the local rum or the cocktails prepared from it, moreover we can light a good Cuban cigar as well.

We just got back from an amazing trip to Cuba for a wedding so I wanted to share with you a few things I think you should know if you are thinking about travelling to Cuba or if its been a while since you have been there!
#1) RESEARCH your hotel before you book it!! I cant stress this enough. I didnt the first time I went and we had a really bad experience!!
#2) You need to bring proof of travel insurance when you visit Cuba. We just kept ours with our passports
#3) Be weary of the food and water. There was a couple of uncooked burgers that my friends got and unsanitary handling of meat. As long as you are weary and careful, you will be fine. I was very careful as I did not want to risk being sick on my vacation!! With the water, I always made sure I could crack the bottle open to make sure it was bottled water and if we ran out, we just bought more at the store as it is not that expensive.
#4) Bring an insulated mug!! At all inclusive resorts, the drinks they give you are in very small cups. So to avoid going back and forth to the bar all day, bring a big mug!!
Here is the link to the resort we stayed at:
http://www.memoriesresorts.com/en/resort/varadero.aspx
Please let me know if you have any questions or comments at all! Would love to hear from you guys.

Havana City is the capital city of Cuba, and one of the fourteen provinces of the Republic of Cuba.
Weather in Havana, Cuba
=======================
Cuba has a tropical climate, with warm, humid weather all year long, though cold temperatures have occured in the mountains before. Being surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean, the Caribbean Sea, and the Gulf of Mexico, Cuba has warm water year round, with winter water temperatures at 75F, spring and fall temperatures at 78F and summer temperatures at 82F.
See in Havana, Cuba
=================
Museum of the Revolution and the Capitol Building.
Visit a live cigar factory. One offering tours is at the intersection of Peñalver and San Carlos (just 1 mile southwest of Old Havana La Habana Vieja), tickets can/should be bought in advance (10 CUC per person as of July 2014). English tours are available. Please note that there is no photography allowed. It is the place where you can also be sure to get the correct cigars in the shop - more expensive than 'street offers' - but the quality of these "street offers" is definitely questionable, . Note that the Partagas cigar factory just behind the Capitol Building has closed permanently since late 2011.
Havana Club Rum Factory. Go on a guided tour of Havana Club, one of Cuba's most famous rums. Most of the exhibits are subtitled in English and are fairly self-explanatory.
Walk along the Prado street in the evening. Great public space - unfortunately not illuminated at night. The Prado hums with street life, cafes and charm.
Walk along El Malecón. A favorite stroll for tourists and locals, a walk along the Malecon runs along the main streets of Havana and provides stunning views of the Bay.
Enjoy the glory of La Habana Vieja (The Old Town), some of it faded and crumbling - but there are many beautifully restored buildings as a result of the UNESCO World Heritage Site designation.
Plaza de la Revolución. Huge square dominated by a statue and monument of Jose Marti and the iconic image of Che Guevara adorning the Ministry of the Interior. Arrive either early or late, as it is often swamped by tourists and gets very hot during the day.
John Lennon Park in Vedado. Features the only statue of a western musician in Havana. Notable for the regularly stolen (and replaced) eyeglasses.
The US Special Interests building in Vedado, just off the Malecon. In the absence of a United States embassy in Cuba, this heavily fortified and guarded building is where Cuban citizens go to apply for US Visas. It was notable for displaying news which is unfiltered and not censored by the Cuban government on electronic billboards situated behind the windows of one of the floors, but these were switched off in 2009. It is also the focus for regularly staged protests.
Hotel Habana Libre in Vedado. The hotel housed Castro's soldiers for several days after they took Havana. It has an excellent selection of photos in the lobby along with one of the only 24 hour fast food restaurants in the city.
Enjoy extraordinary 360-degree views of the city using the large Camara Oscura in the old town.
The Catedral de San Cristobal in old Havana. Said to be the only example of a baroque construction that possesses asymmetrical features, one of the towers is wider than the other.
Plaza de Armas. Spacious and elegant, the square is surrounded by baroque constructions that give it a authentic colonial milieu.
Castillo de la Real Fuerza, Plaza des Armas. Castillo de La Real Fuerza is the oldest bastioned fortress in the New World and has now reopened as a Cuba’s premier maritime museum.
Do in Havana, Cuba
===============
Walk along the Malecón, the sea wall that runs along the Havana coastline. On weekends this is where the locals come to party, so bring a bottle and join in.
Latin American New Cinema Festival, [6] is a popular event held every December, screening international films and drawing around 500,000 people.
Tropicana Show — A cabaret show that costs 90CUC.
Take a tour in an old car — For around 20-30CUC an hour for up to four people, be driven around Havana in style. Choose a car you like near the Hotel Inglaterra or outside the Museum of the Revolution.
Go to the eastern beaches (Playas del Este) — There's a bus leaving from Hotel Inglaterra every 30 minutes. Price is 5 CUC for a roundtrip. The ride takes about 30 minutes.
Walk around Havana Vieja in the early mornings, or take a very long walking tour with "Havana Frans", a Dutch jazz photographer who lives in Havana.

See in Havana, Cuba
=================
