Havana was founded in the 16th century by the Spanish and played strategic role in the connection between the New and the Old World. Old Havana and its fortification system is inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List.

In this short video I explain some of the unique aspects of visiting Cuba from getting around to getting a room.
The dual currency/economy makes even the simple task of changing money an interesting experience!
Due to food shortages Cuba isn't exactly a great culinary destination. Compared to the rest of Central America it can be quite pricey for tourists. Be aware local wages can be as low as $15 USD a month and as tourism provides such a great influx of cash, there are many tourist touts and rampant prostitution.
In the same way that tourists visit Detroit to photograph the 'ruin porn' Havana is quite visually stunning.
Most of the cars are big and bold American made pre-1960 models and the architecture features a stunning array of styles from colonial to neo-classic, art deco to art nouveau.
Unfortunately for the residents, many of the buildings are in dangerous states of disrepair. It is not uncommon to see people living in a house next to another house that has crumbled into rubble!
Cuba has been one of my favourite destinations, apart from being a photographers dream, I really liked the people. They were friendly and proud, honest and humorous.
I would suggest if people have been thinking of visiting Cuba, do it immediately. When American's start visiting in huge numbers, it will change forever!

Havana (/həˈvænə/; Spanish: La Habana, [la aˈβana] (
listen)) is the capital city, province, major port, and leading commercial centre of Cuba. The city proper has a population of 2.1 million inhabitants, and it spans a total of 726.75 km2 (280.60 sq mi) — making it the largest city by area, the most populous city, and the fourth largest metropolitan area in the Caribbean region. The city extends mostly westward and southward from the bay, which is entered through a narrow inlet and which divides into three main harbours: Marimelena, Guanabacoa and Atarés. The sluggish Almendares River traverses the city from south to north, entering the Straits of Florida a few miles west of the bay.
Havana was founded by the Spanish in the 16th century and due to its strategic location it served as a springboard for the Spanish conquest of the continent becoming a stopping point for the treasure laden Spanish Galleons on the crossing between the New World and the Old World. King Philip II of Spain granted Havana the title of City in 1592. Walls as well as forts were built to protect the old city. The sinking of the U.S. battleship Maine in Havana's harbor in 1898 was the immediate cause of the Spanish-American War.

Kenneth Bruce Gorelick (born June 5, 1956), better known by his stage name Kenny G, is an American adult contemporary and smooth jazz saxophonist. His fourth album, Duotones, brought him breakthrough success in 1986. Kenny G is the biggest-selling instrumental musician of the modern era, with global sales totaling more than 75 million albums.
Kenny G was born in Seattle, Washington to a Jewish family and grew up in the city's Seward Park neighborhood, which is a center of the city's Jewish community. He came into contact with a saxophone when he heard someone performing with one on The Ed Sullivan Show. He started playing the saxophone in 1966 when he was 10 years old. He learned how to play under the direction of local trumpeter Gerald Pfister and by practicing along with records (mostly of Grover Washington, Jr.), trying to emulate the sounds that he was hearing. His first saxophone was a Buffet Crampon alto.
Kenny G attended Whitworth Elementary School, Sharples Junior High School, Franklin High School, and the University of Washington, all in his home town of Seattle. When he entered high school, he failed on his first try to get into the jazz band, but tried again the following year and earned first chair. In addition to his studies while in high school, he took private lessons on the saxophone and clarinet from Johnny Jessen, once a week for a year.

In this short video I explain some of the unique aspects of visiting Cuba from getting around to getting a room. The dual currency/economy makes even the simple task of changing money an interesting experience! Due to food shortages Cuba isn't exactly a great culinary destination. Compared to the rest of Central America it can be quite pricey for tourists. Be aware local wages can be as low as $15 USD a month and as tourism provides such a great influx of cash, there are many tourist touts and rampant prostitution. In the same way that tourists visit Detroit to photograph the 'ruin porn' Havana is quite visually stunning. Most of the cars are big and bold American made pre-1960 models and the architecture features a stunning array of styles from colonial to neo-classic, art deco to art nouveau. Unfortunately for the residents, many of the buildings are in dangerous states of disrepair. It is not uncommon to see people living in a house next to another house that has crumbled into rubble! Cuba has been one of my favourite destinations, apart from being a photographers dream, I really liked the people. They were friendly and proud, honest and humorous. I would suggest if people have been thinking of visiting Cuba, do it immediately. When American's start visiting in huge numbers, it will change forever! In this short video I explain some of the unique aspects of visiting Cuba from getting around to getting a room. The dual currency/economy makes even the simple task of changing money an interesting experience! Due to food shortages Cuba isn't exactly a great culinary destination. In this short video I explain some of the unique aspects of visiting Cuba from getting around to getting a room.
The dual currency/economy makes even the simple task of changing money an interesting experience!
Due to food shortages Cuba isn't exactly a great culinary destination. Compared to the rest of Central America it can be quite pricey for tourists. Be aware local wages can be as low as $15 USD a month and as tourism provides such a great influx of cash, there are many tourist touts and rampant prostitution.
In the same way that tourists visit Detroit to photograph the 'ruin porn' Havana is quite visually stunning.
Most of the cars are big and bold American made pre-1960 models and the architecture features a stunning array of styles from colonial to neo-classic, art deco to art nouveau.
Unfortunately for the residents, many of the buildings are in dangerous states of disrepair. It is not uncommon to see people living in a house next to another house that has crumbled into rubble!
Cuba has been one of my favourite destinations, apart from being a photographers dream, I really liked the people. They were friendly and proud, honest and humorous.
I would suggest if people have been thinking of visiting Cuba, do it immediately. When American's start visiting in huge numbers, it will change forever!

Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars. But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. Hey I know you guys have been waiting and waiting for this review but my internet right now is HORRIBLE so I wasn't able to edit and upload as I want... anyway, Cuba. BEAUTIFUL! People are super friendly but very pushy. Outside of cruising there isn't much to do gay wise in Cuba... also since most of the local people can't afford a place of their own if you plan on doing the naughty you have to have a hotel room for yourself =p Also it's very polluted which is probably the biggest negative for me, oh and that there is no food! This swampy nature reserve with its dense mangrove forest vegetation offers an ideal sanctuary for many rare water birds. No Cuban town has changed as little in two hundred years than that of Trinidad. In the 18th century, the city experienced great wealth and recognition due to the cultivation of sugar cane and the luxurious palaces and villas of the sugar barons still leave their mark on the city. Most cultural holidays to Cuba will start in Havana, a city of magnificent decaying colonial architecture, monuments and parks, museums and galleries, music and bars and large old American cars.
But the first thing you'll probably notice wandering around Havana is the near total lack of consumerism. Cuba is still a communist country with no commercial influence from America, and as such there's almost no evidence at all of the large multinationals we're used to in the West; you won't find any Starbucks or McDonalds here. There are no billboards advertising Coca Cola, there are no glass fronted shopping malls. Which is actually really quite refreshing. The whole city gives you a sense of stepping back in time.
Here in Havana you should enjoy a tour of the cities main sites, an evening at the Bueno Vista Social Club, and trip to one of her many museums. You'll need at least a couple of days, its a very fun place.
In two weeks time Trinidad will celebrate its 500 anniversary. Founded only a few years after Christopher Columbus discovered the America's, the town shot to prominence in the 19th century as one of the world's largest exporters of sugar. With its fine plazas, palaces and churches, and its famous cobbled streets lined by colourful houses, it developed into masterpiece of colonial Caribbean architecture. So well preserved is the town that in 1988 it was awarded UNESCO World Heritage Status and today forms an important part of most cultural trips to the country.
From Trinidad you might continue east to visit the revolutionary centre of Santiago de Cuba, or head west to enjoy the amazing landscapes around Vinales. Or you might like to do something completely different.
Of course there are plenty of other things to enjoy in Cuba besides the cultural highlights Trinidad and Havana offer. Cuba is blessed with beautiful countryside through which to can go hiking, cycling and horse back riding. Right now I am at a government ranch called La Guabina, in Pinar del Rio province. Each year Wild Frontiers takes the place over to run a horse riding tour of the area and horse riding is primarily what I have come here to do. But if riding is not your thing, from here you can also go on wonderful walks, go fishing or boating on one of the regions many lakes, indulge in some bird watching, or just relax away from the more chaotic life urban Cuba has to offer.
And finally of course there are beaches. As an island over a 1000 kilometres in length, with the Gulf of Mexico on one side and the Caribbean Sea on the other, there are hundreds of wonderful beaches just waiting to be enjoyed. And in our experience, Cayo Levisa, where I am now, is one of the best.
Relatively close to Havana, and relatively small in size, Cayo Levisa offers all the usual activities you'd associate with a modern beach resort, like sailing, fishing snorkeling and diving, but is small enough to not have you feeling drowned by mass tourism. As with a number of other similar locations, Cayo Levisa offers a great way to round off your trip to Cuba.
Of course a cultural adventure to Cuba will not be for everyone. With luxury accommodation pretty much non-existent, transport pretty basic, the cuisine though in places surprisingly good, in others rather plain, and a service level that is at best eclectic, those looking for a high end experience will almost certainly be disappointed here.
But if you're the kind of traveller that is interested in seeing a country that hasn't really changed in the last 50 years, a place that has not been overwhelmed by all the trappings of modern consumerism, and are happy to go with the flow in one of the world's last remaining communist countries, then here in Cuba you will find one of the most friendly, authentic, historically interesting and culturally rich places in the whole of Latin America.
My advice is to come soon before it all changes.

Hey I know you guys have been waiting and waiting for this review but my internet right now is HORRIBLE so I wasn't able to edit and upload as I want... anyway, Cuba. BEAUTIFUL! People are super friendly but very pushy. Outside of cruising there isn't much to do gay wise in Cuba... also since most of the local people can't afford a place of their own if you plan on doing the naughty you have to have a hotel room for yourself =p
Also it's very polluted which is probably the biggest negative for me, oh and that there is no food!

Castillo dela Fuero Real, an appealing little fortress with four corner towers. The two bigger fortresses are across the bay, Bhaiya dela Habana where a huge statue of Christ reminding us of the one in Rio also stands.
The capital of balance in beautiful old monuments like Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the monument of General Maximo Gomez, the father of the land or the monument of the Yak Grama. The outstanding sights of Havana are three fortresses which used to protect the harbor and the city. The oldest one is El Castillo dela Fuero Real, an appealing little fortress with four corner towers. The two bigger fortresses are across the bay, Bhaiya dela Habana where a huge statue of Christ reminding us of the one in Rio also stands.
Through the 735 meter long tunnel under the bay, we can reach Castillo del Moro. Construction on the fortress rising 30 meters above sea level began in 1598 to protect the bay from enemy ships. The lighthouse standing here was built later in 1845. On the east part of the bay, the biggest fortress which gives the most beautiful panorama over the city can be found. Castillo de San Carlos de la Cabana stands on the hill from where the English started to shoot at the Fortress of Moro. It was built towards the end of the 1700s and it has been connected with Moro by a tunnel for a long time. It's plans were designed by French engineers and it has impressive dimensions, 700 meters in length and 300 meters in width. Its construction cost the Spanish government a fortune and this turned out to be in vain because no battles were ever fought in the fortress. Nowadays, museums, exhibition rooms and restaurants can be found there. But many people come here old because of the view.

One attraction based on tradition attracts unbelievable crowds of people every evening. At 9 p.m. when the harbor closed and people were told to go to bed, silencio—silence was shouted and a gunshot was fired. Today, it doesn't hasten tourists to go to bed but instead gives a sign to go out and enjoy the night life of Havana. And which place would be better for this purpose than a Tropicana show which has entertained its audience with a spectacular review for over 60 years.
