Kite is a common name for birds of the family Accipitridae.
Some authors use the terms "hovering kite" and "soaring kite" to distinguish between Elanus and the milvine kites, respectively. The groups may also be differentiated by size, referring to milvine kites as "large kites", and elanine kites as "small kites".
A kite is traditionally a tethered heavier-than-air craft with wing surfaces that react against the air to create lift and drag. A kite consists of wings, tethers and anchors. Kites have a bridle to guide the face of the kite at the correct angle so the wind can lift it. A kite may have fixed or moving anchors.
The lift that sustains the kite in flight is generated when air flows around the kite's surface, producing low pressure above and high pressure below the wings. The interaction with the wind also generates horizontal drag along the direction of the wind. The resultant force vector from the lift and drag force components is opposed by the tension of one or more of the lines or tethers to which the kite is attached. The anchor point of the kite line may be static or moving (e.g., the towing of a kite by a running person, boat, free-falling anchors as in paragliders and fugitive parakites or vehicle).
The same principles of fluid flow apply in liquids and kites are also used under water.
Birds (class Aves) are a group of endothermic vertebrates, characterised by feathers, a beak with no teeth, the laying of hard-shelled eggs, a high metabolic rate, a four-chambered heart, and a lightweight but strong skeleton. Birds live worldwide and range in size from the 5 cm (2 in) bee hummingbird to the 2.75 m (9 ft) ostrich. They rank as the class of tetrapods with the most living species, at approximately ten thousand, with more than half of these being passerines, sometimes known as perching birds or, less accurately, as songbirds.
The fossil record indicates that birds are the last surviving dinosaurs, having evolved from feathered ancestors within the theropod group of saurischian dinosaurs. True birds first appeared during the Cretaceous period, around 100 million years ago, and the last common ancestor is estimated to have lived about 95 million years ago. DNA-based evidence finds that birds radiated extensively around the time of the Cretaceous–Paleogene extinction event that killed off the non-avian dinosaurs. Birds in South America survived this event and then migrated to other parts of the world via multiple land bridges while diversifying during periods of global cooling. Primitive bird-like "stem-birds" that lie outside class Aves proper, in the group Avialae, have been found dating back to the mid-Jurassic period. Many of these early stem-birds, such as Archaeopteryx, were not yet capable of fully powered flight, and many retained primitive characteristics like toothy jaws in place of beaks and long bony tails.
The red kite (Milvus milvus) is a medium-large bird of prey in the family Accipitridae, which also includes many other diurnal raptors such as eagles, buzzards, and harriers. The species is currently endemic to the Western Palearctic region in Europe and northwest Africa, though formerly also occurred just outside in northern Iran. It is resident in the milder parts of its range in western Europe and northwest Africa, but birds from northeastern and central Europe winter further south and west, reaching south to Turkey. Vagrants have reached north to Finland and south to Israel, Libya and Gambia.
Red kites are 60 to 70 cm (24 to 28 in) long with a 175–179 cm (69–70 in) wingspan; males weigh 800–1,200 g (28–42 oz), and females 1,000–1,300 g (35–46 oz). It is an elegant bird, soaring on long wings held at a dihedral, and long forked tail, twisting as it changes direction. The body, upper tail and wing coverts are rufous. The white primary flight feathers contrast with the black wing tips and dark secondaries. Apart from the weight difference, the sexes are similar, but juveniles have a buff breast and belly. Its call is a thin piping sound, similar to but less mewling than the common buzzard. There is a rare white leucistic form accounting for approximately 1% of hatchlings in the Welsh population but is at a disadvantage in the survival stakes.
Coney Island is a peninsular residential neighborhood, beach, and leisure/entertainment destination on the Atlantic Ocean in the southwestern part of the borough of Brooklyn, New York City. The site was formerly an outer barrier island, but became partially connected to the mainland by land fill. The residential portion of the peninsula is a community of 60,000 people in its western part, with Sea Gate to its west, Brighton Beach and Manhattan Beach to its east, the Atlantic Ocean to the south, and Gravesend to the north.
Coney Island is well known as the site of amusement parks and a seaside resort. The attractions reached a historical peak during the first half of the 20th century, declining in popularity after World War II and years of neglect. In recent years, the area has seen the opening of MCU Park stadium and has become home to the Brooklyn Cyclones minor league baseball team, as well as the opening of a new amusement park among several adjacent ones.
Coney Island is the westernmost part of the barrier islands of Long Island, and is about 4 miles (6.4 km) long and 0.5 miles (0.80 km) wide. It was formerly an island that was separated from the main part of Brooklyn by Coney Island Creek, a partial tidal mudflats, but it has since been developed into a peninsula. There were plans early in the 20th century to dredge and straighten the creek as a ship canal, but they were abandoned, and the center of the creek was filled in completely to allow construction of the Belt Parkway before World War II, and it was filled in again in 1962 with the construction of the Verrazano–Narrows Bridge. The western and eastern ends of the island are now peninsulas.
Mississippi kites will swoop aggressively to defend their nesting territories. This spells trouble, since they like to nest in city parks, golf courses, and other high-traffic human areas. Check out this fascinating, if not scary, slow-motion look at an attacking kite.

The black kites or Indian kites are medium-sized bird of prey, distributed across India. The Indian black kites are opportunistic hunters, spend a lot of time soaring and gliding in thermals in search of food more likely to scavenge. The small Indian kite is a sub species of the big black kite and slightly different from red kites. The small size raptors are well adapted to living in Indian cities, they attracted to smoke and fires for escaping prey like birds, bats and rodents. -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Henvalvani FM 90.4 Mhz - "Voice of Success" in Garhwali vlog" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NIcBuWuuU4o -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-
Graceful Swallow Tailed Kite appears hovering and hunting over the Florida Backyard - called "the most beautiful bird of prey" and “the coolest bird on the planet” it is unmistakable in flight. Exciting to see this bird hunting over the Backyard - a much rare sighting than an eagle - this is an amazing bird and brings to four the species of Hawks documented in the Backyard this winter. Early march they are beginning to arrive to mate in Florida - I can only dream they would choose to mate and nest in the tall pine scrub/wetlands behind the Backyard. Our most beautiful bird of prey, striking in its shape, its pattern, and its extraordinarily graceful flight. Hanging motionless in the air, swooping and gliding, rolling upside down and then zooming high in the air with scarcely a motion of ...

This vid is from sometime in '03. I had just gotten my first video camera (Canon GL1) the year before and had a good stockpile of random footage that I had shot from whatever I was up to - and then compiled it into this. The following is a list of comments I made while watching, which will hopefully help you appreciate it more. Press play now. Begin Notes: Testing out editing effects, kite out at Ocean Beach in SF, Broadway tunnel, back at OB with kite (more effects testing), bird flying footage, marble, my nephew, testing effects with kite again, carpet crosses, running though a tunnel near Burlington, VT, more effects trials, flying with Dave in Tahoe, shadow fun with plane landing, Jerome paragliding near Yosemite, ultralight flight, Stockton tunnel, Pat Spurgeon (Rogue Wave) again, ne...

Join him in his 2012 season to support this new form of flying and promote your company. A season focussed on 'acrobatics' in Europe with travel, training and competitions can be budgeted as little as €5000. Michael is looking for additional support. On the weekend of July 26-27, nine kiteboarders rode a distance and route none had attempted before, crossing between three major islands in the Hawaiian archipelago. The cooperative team event took 7 hours and over 100 miles of riding using the latest Naish Kiteboarding 2008/09 gear. Starting at Ho'okipa (Lanes) beach on Maui's North Shore at 11am, the team launched and sailed to the horizon with two support boats and a chase plane in pursuit. Out into the Pailolo channel separating the islands of Maui and Moloka'i, the first challenge presented itself to the riders as the wind slackened. Pumping their kites vigorously, they eventually made it to the far eastern shore of Moloka'i which is luckily has a reliable venturi. From that point and all the way down the southern coast, the tea...

Thirteen members of the B.B.B. performed at our favorite rock in front of the Prancing Pony (after Longbeard juiced us up with lots of Sangria!). Many people at the event were able to fly Sunny Summer and Soaring Bird Kites even after the midnight hour passed. Some of us were so drunk that we broke out our "hawt pants" during Aegy's song :)
