La Mer (song)
"La Mer" (English: "The Sea") is a song written by French composer, lyricist, singer and showman Charles Trenet. The song was first recorded by the French singer Roland Gerbeau in 1945. It was not until 1946 that Trenet recorded his own version. When it was released in 1946, it became an unexpected hit, and has remained a chanson classic and jazz standard ever since.
Background and history
Trenet says that he wrote a first version of the song's lyrics as poem at the age of 16, many years before he came up with a tune for it. The tune came to him while traveling on train in 1943 while he was gazing out of the window at a couple of ponds. He jotted it down on piece of paper and in the afternoon he worked out the details with his pianist Léo Chauliac. That evening they performed it in front of an audience but without having much of an impact.
The song was not recorded before the end of the war. It was first offered to Suzy Solidor, who however declined it. After that the job fell to Roland Gerbeau, who recorded it together with Jo Bouillon's orchestra at the end of 1945. The orchestration and chorus were provided by Albert Lasny. Trenet himself recorded his song for the first time in 1946.

La Mer was a thoroughbred racehorse, who raced from 1976 to 1979. She raced and won 24 times out of 43 starts, as well as second 5 times and third 6 times in 1200m to 2400m, winning NZ$225,925 and AUS$19,500 in stake money.
Major Wins
La Mer was the 1979 Horse of the Year and 1977 Filly of the Year in New Zealand. She raced in Australia once, and was 2nd in the LKS MacKinnon Stakes. She won numerous Weight for Age races in New Zealand, as well as the WRC Desert Gold Stakes in 1978.
Parentage & Training
La Mer was sired by Copenhagen II from La Balsa and then trained by the New Zealander Malcolm Smith.

The Fragile is the third studio album and a double album by American industrial rock band Nine Inch Nails, released on September 21, 1999, by Interscope Records. The album was produced by Nine Inch Nails frontman Trent Reznor and long-time collaborator Alan Moulder.
The Fragile peaked at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart in its debut week, before dropping to number 16 the following week. The album was certified double platinum by the Recording Industry Association of America on January 4, 2000, denoting shipments of two million copies in the United States. Despite some criticism for its length and lyrical substance, the album received positive reviews from most music critics. The Fragile was promoted with four singles: "The Day the World Went Away", "We're in This Together", "Into the Void", and "Starfuckers, Inc." A companion remix album, Things Falling Apart, was released in 2000.
Writing and recording
The Fragile was produced by Trent Reznor and Alan Moulder at Nothing Studios, New Orleans. There were some personnel changes within Nine Inch Nails after the Self-Destruct tour, which saw drummer Chris Vrenna replaced by Bill Rieflin and Jerome Dillon, the latter of whom would become Nine Inch Nails' full-time drummer until late 2005. Charlie Clouser and Danny Lohner contributed occasional instrumentation and composition to several tracks although the album was predominantly written and performed by Reznor alone. The Fragile was mixed by Alan Moulder and mastered by Tom Baker. The packaging was created by David Carson and Rob Sheridan.

La Mer (song)
"La Mer" (English: "The Sea") is a song written by French composer, lyricist, singer and showman Charles Trenet. The song was first recorded by the French singer Roland Gerbeau in 1945. It was not until 1946 that Trenet recorded his own version. When it was released in 1946, it became an unexpected hit, and has remained a chanson classic and jazz standard ever since.
Background and history
Trenet says that he wrote a first version of the song's lyrics as poem at the age of 16, many years before he came up with a tune for it. The tune came to him while traveling on train in 1943 while he was gazing out of the window at a couple of ponds. He jotted it down on piece of paper and in the afternoon he worked out the details with his pianist Léo Chauliac. That evening they performed it in front of an audience but without having much of an impact.
The song was not recorded before the end of the war. It was first offered to Suzy Solidor, who however declined it. After that the job fell to Roland Gerbeau, who recorded it together with Jo Bouillon's orchestra at the end of 1945. The orchestration and chorus were provided by Albert Lasny. Trenet himself recorded his song for the first time in 1946.
