Peter Lehner (born 1958) is an American lawyer and environmentalist. He leads a sustainable food and farming program at Earthjustice, developing strategies to reduce health, environmental, and climate harms from food production, and to promote a more environmentally sound agricultural system.
From 2007 to 2015, Lehner was the executive director of the Natural Resources Defense Council and the NRDC Action Fund. There, Lehner managed more than 500 environmental advocates in seven offices, guided NRDC's policy, advocacy, communications, strategy, development, and management, and led the Action Fund's political activities. During Lehner’s tenure, NRDC opened new offices in Beijing and Chicago and launched a Center for Market Innovation. Among other new initiatives, Lehner shaped a clean food program addressing food waste, antibiotics in meat, regional food, and climate mitigation. He blogged regularly on Huffington Post, delivered a TEDx talk on food waste, and co-authored, with Bob Deans, the book In Deep Water, about the 2010 Deepwater Horizon oil spill in the Gulf.
Natural Resources is a soul album released by Motown girl group Martha Reeves and the Vandellas in 1970 on the Gordy (Motown) label. The album is significant for the Vietnam War ballad "I Should Be Proud" and the slow jam, "Love Guess Who". The album marked a return from lead singer Martha Reeves, recovering from a time in a mental institution after an addiction to painkillers nearly wrecked her (though it still took her until 1977 to beat her addiction). This was the next-to-last album for the Vandellas, whose success had peaked in the mid-1960s.
Peter often is used to refer to Saint Peter, a disciple of Jesus Christ. It can also refer to many other people, of which only a few are listed here. This page only lists people commonly referred to as "Peter" and nothing else; for others, please see List of people named Peter.
The Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC) is a New York City-based, non-profit international environmental advocacy group, with offices in Washington, D.C., San Francisco, Los Angeles, Chicago, and Beijing. Founded in 1970, NRDC today has 2.4 million members and online activities nationwide and a staff of more than 400 lawyers, scientists and other policy experts.
The charity monitoring group Charity Navigator gave the Natural Resources Defense Council four out of four stars in its three rating categories: overall, financial practices, and accountability & transparency.
The NRDC was co-founded in 1970 by John Adams, Richard Ayres, John Bryson, Edward Strohbehn, and Gus Speth. Together with a board of scientists and attorneys the NRDC is at the forefront of the environmental movement. The organization states that it seeks sustainable policies from federal, state and local government and industrial corporations. It seeks to influence federal and state environmental and other agencies, the Congress and state legislatures, and the courts to reduce global warming, limit pollution, and generally conserve energy and increase sustainability of commerce and manufacturing. NRDC participates in litigation in federal and state courts to influence implementation and enforcement of the Clean Air Act, Clean Water Act, and other federal and state laws protecting the environment. The Council also supports an environmental science program that involves NRDC staff and associated scientists, including a program seeking transformation of manufacturing industries to more sustainable production. In addition, the organization states that it educates the public.
The Garrison Institute is a non-profit, non-sectarian organization located in Garrison, New York. Its stated mission is “applying the power of contemplation to social and environmental change, helping build a more compassionate, resilient future.” Drawing on current scientific research and contemplative practices, the Institute’s programs develop and disseminate contemplative-based methodologies designed to enhance resilience, leadership and effectiveness, especially in the fields of education, environmental/climate change, and trauma care. It holds contemplative retreats representing a wide range of traditions and practices, selected for their conduciveness to personal growth and positive social change.
The Garrison Institute was founded in 2003 by Jonathan F. P. Rose, founder and president of the sustainable development firm Jonathan Rose Companies, and Diana Calthorpe Rose. Its founding spiritual advisers, still serving today, are Gelek Rimpoche, Rabbi Zalman Schachter-Shalomi and Father Thomas Keating. Inspired by the opportunity of rescuing a disused Capuchin monastery from real estate development and adapting it for a new use, the Institute’s founders set out to define and create a “monastery of the 21st century,” one whose work was socially engaged and relevant to contemporary issues, inclusive and accessible, scientifically valid and evidence-based.
According to a report by the Natural Resources Defense Council, Americans are tossing up to 40 percent of the food supply each year, along with all the resources used to produce food that never gets eaten. Food waste occurs at home, on the farm, and in supermarkets. In this TED Talk, NRDC's executive director Peter Lehner explores the low-tech, tried-and-true solutions proven to reduce food waste and save money for consumers and businesses alike. It's essential that we start putting more of these solutions into action.
