Julian (novel)

Julian is a 1964 novel by Gore Vidal, a work of historical fiction written primarily in the first person dealing with the life of the Roman emperor Flavius Claudius Julianus, (known to Christians as Julian the Apostate), who reigned 360–363 C.E.

Novel

The story of the novel begins in March of CE 380, nearly 20 years after the death of Julian. It starts as the text of a series of letters between Libanius and Priscus of Epirus, two confidants of Julian. In their various letters they discuss their lives and in particular the recent events involving an imperial edict of Theodosius involving the Nicene Creed of Christianity. In his first letter to Priscus, Libanius proposes to write a biography of Julian. Eventually Priscus agrees to send a manuscript written by Julian himself to Libanius along with his own comments written in the margins.

The rest of the novel is then presented as the manuscript of Julian in its original form including instructions to the eventual editor and publisher. The marginal notes of Priscus are incorporated into Julian's narrative where he feels fit to comment on or expand certain parts of the narrative. These comments are then often followed by the comments of Libanius on both the narrative and the comments of Priscus. Frequently they offer a different and sometimes contradictory hindsight interpretation of events and people than Julian expresses in his manuscript.

The Famous Five (series)

The Famous Five is the name of a series of children's adventure novels written by English author Enid Blyton. The first book, Five on a Treasure Island, was published in 1942. The novels feature the adventures of a group of young children – Julian, Dick, Anne and Georgina (George) – and their dog Timmy.

The stories take place in the children's school holidays after they have returned from their respective boarding schools. Each time they meet they get caught up in an adventure, often involving criminals or lost treasure. Sometimes the scene is set close to George's family home at Kirrin Cottage in Dorset, such as the picturesque Kirrin Island, owned by George and her family in Kirrin Bay. George's own home and various other houses the children visit or stay in are hundreds of years old and often contain secret passages or smugglers' tunnels. In some books the children go camping in the countryside, on a hike or holiday together elsewhere. The settings, however, are almost always rural and enable the children to discover the simple joys of cottages, islands, the English and Welsh countryside and sea shores, as well as an outdoor life of picnics, lemonade, bicycle trips and swimming.

Fox (comics)

The Fox is the name of two fictional superheroes that appear in periodicals published by MLJ Comics and later Dark Circle Comics.

Publication history

The first Fox (Paul Patten) debuted in MLJ Comic's Blue Ribbon Comics #4 (June 1940), in a story written by Joe Blair and drawn by Irwin Hasen. He appeared in that title until the series ended in March 1942, in the 22nd issue. He only appeared on the cover of one title, #16, in conjunction with all the other heroes that appeared in the comic series.

He later made a guest appearance in Mighty Crusaders #4 (April 1966), as part of a crowd scene featuring nearly every superhero published by MLJ (the story, somewhat ironically, was titled "Too Many Super Heroes!"). He returned in issue #5, where he forms a team called The Ultra-Men with heroes Captain Flag and The Web. This was the sole appearance of that group. Some of the Fox stories from this period were written and illustrated by Alex Toth. The first Fox's final appearance was in Black Hood #3 (Oct. 1983).

Wade Fox

Rufus Wade Fox, Jr. (June 2, 1920 – September 20, 1964), was an American zoologist and herpetologist from the University of California, Berkeley. He specialized in the anatomy of snakes and the systematics of the western garter snakes.

Biography

Wade Fox was born on June 2, 1920 in Hilton, Virginia.

He graduated from the University of North Carolina in 1943 and then earned a Master's (1946) and doctoral degree at the University of California, Berkeley, working as Curatorial Assistant of in the Museum of Vertebrate Zoology from 1943–1949, and earning a PhD under Robert C. Stebbins in 1950. His dissertation topic was "Biology of the Garter Snakes of the San Francisco Bay Region". Later he became president of Herpetologists' League and an editor of the journal Copeia.

He named several garter snake (Thamnophis) subspecies, including Thamnophis elegans terrestris, Thamnophis elegans aquaticus (now a synonym of T. atratus atratus) and Thamnophis sirtalis fitchi. He is commemorated in the name of the Fox's mountain meadow snake (Adelophis foxi).

Fox (UK and Ireland)

Fox (stylised as FOX) is a television channel in the United Kingdom and Ireland, owned by Fox International Channels. It launched on 12 January 2004 and was originally known as FX (in line with the American channel of the same name). Featuring a mix of animated comedies and American drama series, the channel's age demographic is adults aged 18–35 years old.

FX289 (2004–05)

The channel launched on 12 January 2004 and was originally branded as FX289, in reference to its Sky EPG number.

FX (2005–2013)

In April 2005, the channel was rebranded as FX as it moved in the Sky EPG. As FX, the channel targeted a demographic of mainly males between 18 and 49 years old. Unlike FX in the USA, it promoted both FX-produced and non-FX-produced shows. Some of the most popular shows to air on the channel included Family Guy and American Dad!. It had a similar format to its American sister channel, with a schedule consisting largely of Fox-produced shows, including comedies such as Family Guy and King of the Hill, and dramas such as The Shield, The X-Files and NYPD Blue. Non-Fox-produced shows rerun or receiving their UK premiere on the channel include The Walking Dead, Falling Skies, Babylon 5, Carnivàle, Highlander, JAG, NCIS, Sleeper Cell, E-Ring and Huff, Generation Kill, True Blood and Dexter.
