The German Army's Service Rifle. The HK G36, a Teutonic masterpiece.
The German Army's Service Rifle has been the G36 for quite some time. Eventually very soon it will be replaced but for now it is still the symbol of HK engineering. Today we delve into the famous rifle and talk about how it stacks up against other 5.56 intermediate caliber service rifles.

G36C
The shortest member of the 5.56 mm G36 family, the G36C is a Compact Carbine with a 9 inch (228 mm) barrel. With the buttstock folded it measures 19.67 inches (500 mm) and is shorter that a 9mm MP5. The G36C is the shortest standard production 5.56 mm carbine made. Its short size makes it especially handy for vehicle operations or any application where a powerful and compact 5.56 mm weapon is required.

This video demonstrates assembling your G36C kit (HKP-21492) with the DefGunz DEF36 upper (sold separately at DefGunz.com). Installing the mag catch can be extremely tedious, so exercise patience. The rest of the installation is relatively simple. Add a barrel mandrel (HKP-02608) and barrel wrench (HKP-00283) to your order, as they are not included in the kit. When the G11 program was cancelled and German reunified, the West German military was still using the 7.62mm G3 rifle, while the East German forces had AK-74 variants. Neither of these were suitable for a new unified German NATO-member Bundeswehr - a rifle in 5.56mm NATO was needed. Heckler & Koch had been working on just such a weapon, designated internally as the HK50.
The rifle is fundamentally an AR-18 derivative, with a multi-lug rotating bolt and a short stroke gas system of the G43 and SVT type. It is made with extensive use of polymer parts, and it extremely easy to strip. It is fitted for an integral optical sight, on the Bundeswehr model a combination laser, fiber-optic red dot, and magnified scope. The weapon was adopted as the G36 by the German military, and was also adopted by Spain to replace the CETME-L. A multitude of smaller police and security agencies have also adopted it, including the US Capitol Police.

The SL-8 was Heckler & Koch’s civilianized version of the G36 military rifle. There was, unsurprisingly, a major interest in semiautomatic civilian copies of the G36, but H&K; was in a difficult position to meet the demand. At the time (mid-1990s) such a rifle was subject to both the 1989 assault weapon importation ban and the 1994 domestic assault weapon ban (which would eventually sunset in 2004). For this reason, the design had to be significantly modified for the US commercial market.
Specifically, the rifle had to have a number of specifically named features removed, and also restricted to only using 10-round or smaller magazines. The feature removal was relatively simple, as elements like a threaded muzzle and bayonet lug were easily deleted. Removing the pistol grip involved replacing the stock with a new thumbhole design, and the military optical sight was replaced with a pica tinny rail (not a legal requirement, but a corporate choice, certainly largely driven by cost).
More significantly, the change to a 10-round magazine was done by converting to a single-stack magazine and redesigning the receiver to include a permanent block to prevent adaptation to original G36 magazines. In addition, the front surface of the right lower locking lug was ground off to prevent the rifle from feeding from the right side of an original double-stack magazine.
Thanks to its strange aesthetics and rather awkward design, the SL-8 never sold well, and its importation was discontinued around 2010. The rifles do remain items of interest particularly for people willing to dedicate the substantial time and money required to rebuild them into proper G36 clones, however.
