In automotive design, the automobile layout describes where on the vehicle the engine and drive wheels are found. Many different combinations of engine location and driven wheels are found in practice, and the location of each is dependent on the application for which the vehicle will be used. Factors influencing the design choice include cost, complexity, reliability, packaging (location and size of the passenger compartment and boot), weight distribution, and the vehicle's intended handling characteristics.
Layouts can roughly be divided into two categories: front- or rear-wheel drive. Four-wheel-drive vehicles may take on the characteristics of either, depending on how power is distributed to the wheels.
Front-wheel-drive layouts are those in which the front wheels of the vehicle are driven. The most popular layout used in cars today is the front-engine, front-wheel drive, with the engine in front of the front axle, driving the front wheels. This layout is typically chosen for its compact packaging; since the engine and driven wheels are on the same side of the vehicle, there is no need for a central tunnel through the passenger compartment to accommodate a prop-shaft between the engine and the driven wheels.
Front-wheel-drive, rear-wheel-drive and all-wheel-drive. What's the difference? And which one should you buy? We head out to the DECA skidpad in Shepparton to put all three to the test. Along with Australian World Rally Championship driver Chris Atkinson, we also brought along an example of each drivetrain layout. A $29,990 front-wheel-drive Hyundai Veloster SR Turbo, powered by a 150kW/265Nm turbocharged 1.6-litre four-cylinder engine, a $54,490 rear-wheel-drive Holden Commodore SS-V Redline, powered by a 304kW/570Nm 6.2-litre LS3 V8, and a $38,990 all-wheel-drive Subaru WRX, powered by a 197kW/350Nm turbocharged 2.0-litre ‘boxer’ four-cylinder. Each car will tackle two tests twice, once with stability control on, once with stability control off. Test One is a dry 90-degree corner, Te...

Clarkson, Hammond and May argue that the producers are wrong in claiming that front-wheel drive is perfectly adequate for the driving enthusiast, so to settle the argument, each is given £1,500 and told to buy a second-hand car that is rear-wheel drive to prove to the producers that they are right - Clarkson believes the perfect weight distribution of his Porsche 944 S2 will help him, Hammond expects it will be the 3.0l Twin Turbo V6 of the Nissan 300ZX he bought, while James buys the Ford Capri 2.8L simply because he wanted one. Driving across France while trying to not break down, the trio engage in a series of challenges, including beating a lap time by a FWD car, getting their car to brake before hitting an item close to their hearts, and taking part in an ice-driving race at Val Thore...
In this episode, Aaron goes over pros and cons to having a RWD Subaru and how to convert your subaru to RWD! From stuck and broken bolts to a stubborn CV joint, you'll see a few mishaps that can happen during your conversion and how to overcome them! *I don't recommend prying apart your transmission with screwdrivers, but do what you have to do. *You don't need to put the inner CV cups on the axle stubs. It works just fine without them. You can also split the case and completely remove the front differential to cut down on excess rotational mass to maximize performance. *I would recommend cutting the outer CV cup off and leaving just the stub. This removes the hassle of prying apart the bearing, while reducing excess rotational mass. *Locktite is not required on the outer CV stub. You c...

Driving around my neighborhood and town in the aftermath of blizzard Jonas at the end of January 2016. We got a solid 3 feet of snow at the very least and my dad and I took a drive in the C300 after the roads were plowed since the car is RWD and that was the only time we could take it out! It sucks that most of the snow on the roads were plowed, earlier on we took the car out for some snow donuts and RWD + Snow = Lots of Fun! I wish I could've recorded that but my SD card was giving me a hard time. Enjoy!

Well, it is safe to say that this weeks project quickly grew in size. I had originally set out to create a wire harness that controls the all wheel drive system, however once things started being taken apart the opportunities presented themselves. This tutorial is on building a harness which enables the car to be switched from all wheel drive to rear wheel drive, new LED lighting for the gauge cluster and center console, boost and oil pressure gauge install, new radio, and lastly flocking the center console trim.
