Lautoka is the second largest city of Fiji. It is in the west of the island of Viti Levu, 24 kilometres north of Nadi, and is the second port of entry in Fiji, after Suva. Lying in the heart of Fiji's sugar cane growing region, it is known as the Sugar City. Covering an area of 16 square kilometres, it had a population of 52,220 at the 2007 census, the most recent to date.
Lautoka is known as the Sugar City because of its sugar cane belt areas. The main Lautoka Sugar Mill was founded in 1903, and is the city's biggest employer by far. Built for the Colonial Sugar Refining Company (Fiji) (CSR) by workers from India and the Solomon Islands between 1899 and 1903, it hires some 1,300 employees today. Other industries include timber milling, garment manufacturing, distillery, brewery, jewellery, blending, steelworks, fishing, hatchery, domestic items, paints, and construction. In 2012 Lautoka was announced as the administration capital of the western division...

WHEELCHAIR NORMAD FROM DIARY We offered Maroona, a woman employee with a large pizza, a lift to Lautoka, and gained a guided tour of her town. Suvas are largest city and Lautokas second, with lots of industry. We have the Fiji Sugar Refinery, Fiji Distillery, producing Bounty rum, a large saw mill and chip board plant, superphosphate centre and large ports. Richard commented: Everything is available for purchase, in Lautoka, mostly Australian products such as TVs, and vacuum cleaners but at high prices. There arn't many whites around at all. I hate the way they hassled me to buy. The markets were huge, filled with vegetables at below Australian prices. The supermarkets were very small and simple."

This is a snap shot of my trip to Fiji in two parts. I went on this trip with my very good friend G in June 2012. Here we used Lonely Plant guidebook as our start point to discover Fiji. We started in Nadi which is not necessarily an interesting town. However, its surroundings are interesting. Sabeto Hot Springs and Garden of the Sleeping Giant are wonderful and a must-see. From Nadi we went to see Lautoka, which in my opinion is much cleaner and more beautiful than Nadi. It's a nice town to walk around and organise a trip to the Koroyanitu National Park which is inhabited by native Fijians who live there in villages. You can also organise a stay in one of the villages if you wish. Lautoka is also a great spot for a transfer to Yasawas or Mamanucas islands. Fijians living on these islands ...

iiiiiiiif...
you don't get a job,
though you're tryin' and you stop
believing that there's s.th. for you out there...
don't you lose your faith
and don't do any mistakes
though the devil on your shoulder's getting louder.
one thing i can tell you
is you should never sell your
soul and your body to the bad guys !
i know it's a temptation
but keep a little patience
'cause when you go to fast you fall for their lies.
i can imagine it's kind of hard
if you don't know how to start
working and gettin' money for a living.
but i think you should wait
for a good way to get payed;
don't go to the enemy i'm not kiddin'!
think about it now
i think that you're about
to be doin' a job that's making you an asshole.
i can guarantee
that this is going to be
unsatisfying and stressfull....
so....
don't don't don't don't don't become a cop !!!!
'cause being a cop is fucked up !!!
if people don't get a job
and demonstrate you beat'em up.
is that really what you wanna be doin' out there?
i know you don't, of course,
but the choice just ain't yours
when the chiefcommander behind you is getting louder.
you'll lose your selfesteem
and therefore you get mean,
treatin' people like you are superior.
don't you understand
that this gets out of hand:
you'll turn into a violent brainless creature.
so listen to my advice:
this is'n a propper price,
you shouldn't even be thinkin' about payin' that.
the way you would be changing
ain't worth no stupid payment.
they're gonna make you aggressive, dumb and braindead!
do you know how you can tell
a human from an animal?
ever heard about the little thing called reason?
you just give it away
'cause ev'ry order you obey...
why would you wanna be a policeman?
so....
don't don't don't don't don't become a cop !!!!
