In the summer of 2012, the National Gallery of Canada in Ottawa proudly hosted the exhibition "Van Gogh: Up Close", which represented the first major showing of the artist's work in Canada in over 25 years.
To complement the exhibition, the Gallery introduced new media-based educational activities to enhance visitor experience.
CHIN had the opportunity to speak with Education and Public Programs staff at the National Gallery to learn more about how new media was used in the "Van Gogh" exhibition.
"We have puzzles, books, iPods with music... We have two projects: Letters to Vincent that invites people to share their thoughts on the exhibition, and we also have the iPad painting activity.
We had one big challenge at the beginning. It was that we couldn't use any conventional art materials.
From that, for us, it was very important for us that people could create after looking at Vincent Van Gogh's artwork, and explore colour, brushstrokes...
So we had a challenge that brought us to many different solutions, and that brought us to explore the possibility of using the iPad.
When that idea floated around, we tried various apps. We selected the ArtRage app, which gave really convincing results.
We were able to do water colour effect, pastel, you could modify the colour when finished your iPad painting.
So essentially we're inviting people to look at one of Vincent Van Gogh's still life. We reproduced three still life that are rotating in the space, and this serves as the subject for the visitor to paint or draw with their finger, with the still life in front of them.
We were amazed with the results. We have over 2,000 iPad paintings so far that have been created in the last month and a half.
And every day when we're in the exhibition, it's nice to see people of various ages -- kids to adults -- playing with the iPad.
We noticed as well that when we give interesting tools to the visitor, we get interesting results.
The iPad, for some reason, feels less threatening. I've seen people that have no prior experience just having fun with the project. It's delightful to see that."
"Van Gogh was a very prolific artist, but also a writer, so we wanted to support that component of the exhibition as well.
What we created was an activity called "Letters to Vincent", where visitors can come in and use one of three computer stations, and write their own letter through a template to Van Gogh.
There's also a component where once you've written your letter, then it's emailed to yourself, and can be keyword matched to one of Van Gogh's original letters.
That keyword matching has been set up with the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam, so you receive your letter, as well as one of his original letters.
Through that, you're also able to share it through social media. We also wanted to create something that could create a component within the Gallery that could be of an international scope, which means that it's being shared through Twitter, or through Facebook."

The Halifax Hurricanes appoint Kevin Keathley as Head Coach and General Manager for the 2016-17 season.
The Hurricanes discussed a return to Halifax with 2015-16 Coach of the Year, Hugo Lopez, however the two sides were unable to come to terms. The Club was overwhelmed with the interest of highly qualified applicants for the new position. Coach Keathley will assume the duties of managing basketball operations for the club as well as Head Coach.
“We are very excited to find a coach of Kevin’s calibre to follow in the footsteps of Hugo Lopez who lead us to a Championship last season. He is a coach who understands what is needed to build a competitive team and to be part of the community”, remarked Don Mills, Chair of the Board.
With over fifteen years of coaching experience at the college and professional levels, Coach Keathley has never had a losing season. “I couldn’t be more excited to be given the opportunity to lead one of the cornerstone franchises of NBL Canada”, said Keathley. “What the front office, Coach Lopez, the players and the community have accomplished last season is nothing short of remarkable. The great fans in Halifax should be very proud of their championship and I am excited to continue what Coach Lopez has started.”

As a consequence of various conflicts, the United Kingdom gained and lost territories within British North America until left, in the late 18th century, with what mostly geographically comprises Canada today. Pursuant to the British North America Act, on July 1, 1867, the colonies of Canada, New Brunswick, and Nova Scotia joined to form the autonomous federal Dominion of Canada. This began an accretion of provinces and territories to the self-governing Dominion to the present ten provinces and three territories forming modern Canada. In 1931, Canada achieved near total independence from the United Kingdom with the Statute of Westminster 1931, and full sovereignty was attained when the Canada Act 1982 removed the last remaining ties of legal dependence on the British parliament.

Vincent van Gogh
Vincent Willem van Gogh (Dutch: [ˈvɪnsɛnt ˈʋɪləm vɑn ˈɣɔx]; (30 March 1853 – 29 July 1890) was a Dutch post-Impressionist painter whose work had far-reaching influence on 20th-century art. His paintings include portraits, self portraits, landscapes, still lifes, olive trees and cypresses, wheat fields and sunflowers. He was largely ignored by critics until after his early death in 1890. The only substantial exhibitions held during his lifetime were showcases in Paris and Brussels. The first published full-length article came in 1890, when Albert Aurier described him as a Symbolist. The widespread and popular realisation of his significance in the history of modern art did not begin until his adoption by the Fauves and German Expressionists in the mid-1910s.
Vincent van Gogh was born to upper middle class parents and spent his early adulthood working for a firm of art dealers before travelling to The Hague, London and Paris, after which he taught in England at Isleworth and Ramsgate. Although he drew as a child, he did not paint until his late twenties; most of his best-known works were completed during the last two years of his life. He was deeply religious as a younger man and aspired to be a pastor and from 1879 worked as a missionary in a mining region in Belgium where he sketched people from the local community. His first major work was 1885's The Potato Eaters, from a time when his palette mainly consisted of sombre earth tones and showed no sign of the vivid colouration that distinguished his later paintings. In March 1886 he relocated to Paris and discovered the French Impressionists.

National Gallery
The National Gallery is an art museum in Trafalgar Square in the City of Westminster, in Central London. Founded in 1824, it houses a collection of over 2,300 paintings dating from the mid-13th century to 1900. The Gallery is an exempt charity, and a non-departmental public body of the Department for Culture, Media and Sport. Its collection belongs to the public of the United Kingdom and entry to the main collection is free of charge. It is among the most visited art museums in the world, after the Musée du Louvre, the British Museum, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
Unlike comparable museums in continental Europe, the National Gallery was not formed by nationalising an existing royal or princely art collection. It came into being when the British government bought 38 paintings from the heirs of John Julius Angerstein, an insurance broker and patron of the arts, in 1824. After that initial purchase the Gallery was shaped mainly by its early directors, notably Sir Charles Lock Eastlake, and by private donations, which comprise two-thirds of the collection. The resulting collection is small in size, compared with many European national galleries, but encyclopaedic in scope; most major developments in Western painting "from Giotto to Cézanne" are represented with important works. It used to be claimed that this was one of the few national galleries that had all its works on permanent exhibition, but this is no longer the case.

Head coach
A head coach, senior coach, or manager is a professional at training and developing athletes. They typically hold a more public profile and are paid more than other coaches. In some sports such as association football, the head coach is usually called the manager, while in other sports such as Australian rules football they are generally termed a senior coach.
Other coaches are usually subordinate to the head coach, often in offensive positions or defensive positions, and occasionally proceeding down into individualized position coaches.
American football
Head coaches in American football have different responsibilities depending on what level of the sport they are coaching.
High school football
The head coach has a much more complete hold on the intricacies of the team. He may have to perform the duties of a defensive or offensive coordinator.
Often, high school head coaches have to do more work off the field than on. It is important that head coaches in high school hire a competent and proactive coaching staff because when the head coach is pulled away from practice then he must be confident that his team is in good hands with his other coaches and staff. One of the most difficult issues, off the field, that head coaches must deal with is the parent although many coaches do not allow parental interactions in many casess. He must be able to handle any issues that parents may have with the way that the head coach is running the program, all along while staying professional and not being demeaning. Furthermore, a high school's head football coach often serves as his school's Athletic Coordinator or Director, which adds even further responsibilities to his job. In some jurisdictions, a high school head coach must also have a paying job within the school, almost always as a teacher.

National Basketball League of Canada
The National Basketball League of Canada (NBL Canada; French: Ligue Nationale de Basketball du Canada) is a Canadian professional men's basketball league founded in 2011. For the first season, three teams formerly of the Premier Basketball League joined, with four expansion teams officially joining to form the NBL's "Original Seven". In 2012, an eighth franchise based in Windsor, Ontario joined the league. The current champions are the Windsor Express, having defeated the Halifax Rainmen 4–3 in the 2015 NBL Finals.
History
In May 2011, it was announced that three former members of the Premier Basketball League—the Halifax Rainmen, Quebec Kebs, and Saint John Mill Rats—would come together to form the National Basketball League of Canada. Eventually, following the summer, the newly-created London Lightning, Moncton Miracles, Oshawa Power, and Summerside Storm joined the league for its inaugural 2011–12 season. At this time, a professional team based in Kingston, Ontario applied to became a member, hoping to play their home games at the K-Rock Centre. Despite efforts from Andre Levingston and Sam Mitchell, the team would never feature. In August 2011, the league reached a long-term agreement with Pointstreak Sports Technologies Inc., which would provide the NBL with a website, real-time scoring, and statistics. The CEO and president of the service, Scott Secord, said, "The NBL is an ideal flagship account for our new services for basketball organizations."

CHIN had the opportunity to speak with Education and Public Programs staff at the National Gallery to learn more about how new media was used in the "Van Gogh" exhibition.
"We have puzzles, books, iPods with music... We have two projects: Letters to Vincent that invites people to share their thoughts on the exhibition, and we also have the iPad painting activity.
We had one big challenge at the beginning. It was that we couldn't use any conventional art materials.
From that, for us, it was very important for us that people could create after looking at Vincent Van Gogh's artwork, and explore colour, brushstrokes...
So we had a challenge that brought us to many different solutions, and that brought us to explore the possibility of using the iPad.
When that idea floated around, we tried various apps. We selected the ArtRage app, which gave really convincing results.
We were able to do water colour effect, pastel, you could modify the colour when finished your iPad painting.
So essentially we're inviting people to look at one of Vincent Van Gogh's still life. We reproduced three still life that are rotating in the space, and this serves as the subject for the visitor to paint or draw with their finger, with the still life in front of them.
We were amazed with the results. We have over 2,000 iPad paintings so far that have been created in the last month and a half.
And every day when we're in the exhibition, it's nice to see people of various ages -- kids to adults -- playing with the iPad.
We noticed as well that when we give interesting tools to the visitor, we get interesting results.
The iPad, for some reason, feels less threatening. I've seen people that have no prior experience just having fun with the project. It's delightful to see that."

The Halifax Hurricanes appoint Kevin Keathley as Head Coach and General Manager for the 2016-17 season.
The Hurricanes discussed a return to Halifax with 2015-16 Coach of the Year, Hugo Lopez, however the two sides were unable to come to terms. The Club was overwhelmed with the interest of highly qualified applicants for the new position. Coach Keathley will assume the duties of managing basketball operations for the club as well as Head Coach.
“We are very excited to find a coach of Kevin’s calibre to follow in the footsteps of Hugo Lopez who lead us to a Championship last season. He is a coach who understands what is needed to build a competitive team and to be part of the community”, remarked Don Mills, Chair of the Board.
With over fifteen years of coaching experience at the college and professional levels, Coach Keathley has never had a losing season. “I couldn’t be more excited to be given the opportunity to lead one of the cornerstone franchises of NBL Canada”, said Keathley. “What the front office, Coach Lopez, the players and the community have accomplished last season is nothing short of remarkable. The great fans in Halifax should be very proud of their championship and I am excited to continue what Coach Lopez has started.”

We chose to stay in the neighborhood of Le Plateau-Mont Royal. On Sunday afternoons you'll find a huge drumming circle on the east end of Mount Royal called Tam Tams. McGill University is one of the most prestigious universities in all of Canada. Poutine, a French Canadian dish, it is basically french fries with gravy and cheese curds on top. For a taste of French charm, wander down the cobbled streets of Old Montreal. Tonight we're at the Cirque du Soleil for a circus performance. The biodome is a popular attraction for families with children. Olympic Stadium is the former home of the Montreal Expos. The botanical gardens are home to beautiful gardens. Bell Center is home to the Montreal Canadiens, one of the most celebrated NHL franchises. There is no better place ot eat smoked meat in Montreal than Schwartz. The Notre Dame Basilica is located in the historic district of Old Montreal. If you enjoy checking out graffiti around Saint Catherine street which is also a shopping district. Head to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts for a look at some of the free current exhibitions. We're here at Park Mount Royal to walk around and head to the lookout point for amazing city views. We chose to stay in the neighborhood of Le Plateau-Mont Royal. On Sunday afternoons you'll find a huge drumming circle on the east end of Mount Royal called Tam Tams. McGill University is one of the most prestigious universities in all of Canada. Poutine, a French Canadian dish, it is basically french fries with gravy and cheese curds on top. For a taste of French charm, wander down the cobbled streets of Old Montreal. Tonight we're at the Cirque du Soleil for a circus performance. The biodome is a popular attraction for families with children. Olympic Stadium is the former home of the Montreal Expos. The botanical gardens are home to beautiful gardens. Bell Center is home to the Montreal Canadiens, one of the most celebrated NHL franchises. There is no better place ot eat smoked meat in Montreal than Schwartz. The Notre Dame Basilica is located in the historic district of Old Montreal. If you enjoy checking out graffiti around Saint Catherine street which is also a shopping district. Eat St. Viateur bagels, which are really famous here in Montreal. A great way to get around the city is by Bixi bike. Montreal's Old Port is worth a wander. The Göta Canal connects Kattegatt on the west coast, with the east coast and is the main waterway through Sweden from Gothenburg to Stockholm. From Gothenburg, we travel by boat, the Göta Älv, inland. One remarkable lock after the other opens up huge gates and the inflow of water raises the boat to the next level. The Trollhättan Canal Museum provides a good insight into the construction of the lock system and old drawings show its planning and construction from 1609. It also includes the history of the Göta Canal and how in 1718 Christopher Polhem was commissioned by CharlesThe Twelfth to build a canal. The pathways alongside the canal were once tow paths where oxen pulled the ships along by rope and trees were planted to provide shade to both Man and beast. Our journey leads into the waters of Bottensjön that is connected to Lake Vättern until we finally arrive at the port of Karlsborg. Behind the walls of Karlsborg Fortress are barracks, various buildings and a church. It is a truly massive construction, built in 1809 after Sweden lost Finland to Russia. Located on the idyllic Lovön Island is the royal castle of Drottningholm Slott that is the main residence of the Swedish royal family, the Versailles Of The North. Queen Hedvig Eleonora had this Baroque castle built in 1662 and in 1744 it was presented to Queen Louisa Ulrika as a wedding gift. This classic route from coast to coast has been an amazing experience with the "Blue Ribbon of Sweden" an unforgettable dream!
