Originally founded as a camera manufacturer, Canon has introduced a series of innovative SLR camera products in its continuing pursuit of the ideal single-lens reflex (SLR) camera. An active-pixel sensor is an image sensor consisting of an integrated circuit containing an array of pixel sensors, each pixel containing a photodetector and an active amplifier. There are many types of active pixel sensors including the CMOS APS used most commonly in cell phone cameras, web cameras, most digital pocket cameras since circa 2010, and in most DSLRs. Such an image sensor is produced by a CMOS, and has emerged as an alternative to charge-coupled device image sensors.
The term active pixel sensor is also used to refer to the individual pixel sensor itself, as opposed to the image sensor; in that case the image sensor is sometimes called an active pixel sensor imager, or active-pixel image sensor.

In the 1990s, a Jet Propulsion Laboratory team led by Eric Fossum
researched ways of improving complementary metal-oxide semiconductor
(CMOS) image sensors in order to miniaturize cameras on spacecraft
while maintaining scientific image quality. Fossum's team founded a
company to commercialize the resulting CMOS active pixel sensor. Now
called the Aptina Imaging Corporation, based in San Jose, California,
the company has shipped over 1 billion sensors for use in applications
such as digital cameras, camera phones, Web cameras, and automotive
cameras. Today, one of every three cell phone cameras on the planet
feature Aptina's sensor technology.

This video displays the operation of a high dynamic range technique that compresses wide ranges of illuminations into the available signal range with a single exposure. An on-line analysis
of the image histogram provides the sensor with the necessary
feedback to dynamically accommodate changing illumination
conditions. This adaptation is accomplished by properly weighing
the influence of local and global illumination on each pixel
response. The main advantages of this technique with respect
to similar approaches previously reported are: i) standard active
pixel sensor circuitry can be used to render the pixel values; ii)
the resulting compressed image representation is ready at the very focal plane without requiring any additional peripheral circuit block.
Experimental results belong to a prototype of smart image sensor
achieving a dynamic range of 102dB.
At the beginnning of the video, the HDR image is provided by an
adaptation exclusively based on the global mean illumination. it is depicted along with the corresponding histogram. When the balance between local and global influences is activated, the resulting image contains much more detail at under- and over-exposed areas.
