STORYLINE:
Albania's top leaders and thousands of people paid their last respects on Saturday, to the country's only post-independence monarch, King Ahmet Zog I, half a century after he died and was buried in exile.
The nation's television stations broadcast live the burial ceremony in the capital Tirana, a day after Zog's remains were returned from France.
The remains were exhumed at Thiais cemetery south of Paris on Tuesday.
He was buried in the family's mausoleum, alongside his Hungarian wife, Queen Geraldina, his son Leka I and his wife Susan.
Zog proclaimed himself Albania's monarch in 1928 and ruled until 1939 when he fled after Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's Fascist troops invaded Albania.
In exile, he lived for many years in England, then Egypt, before settling in France where he died in 1961.
Albania's post-World War II communist regime abolished the monarchy in 1946.
Albania remains a parliamentary republic after the fall of communism in 1990.
The royal family returned to Albania in 2002, leading a quiet life though never relinquishing the claim to the throne.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that Albanians honoured Zog for his "contribution in building up this country."
Berisha was joined at the ceremony by President Bujar Nishani and Kosovo's President Ahtifete Jahjaga.
The ceremony was ignored by the country's opposition parties.
After Albania's Communist regime fell in 1990, Zog's son, Leka I Zog, made two disastrous attempts to return home - first in 1993 when Berisha's government threw him out, and in 1997 when he was charged with leading an armed uprising after failing to convince Albanians to vote for a monarchy in a referendum.
Since then, the family has been given back some of its old royal properties and granted diplomatic passports.
Zog's grandson, Leka II Zog, has since served as an adviser to several Albanian governments.
Albania is currently celebrating the centenary of its independence from the Ottoman Empire.

One of Indy's favourite historical characters is actually King Zog of Albania. History's heaviest smoker and probably the only monarch to pull out his gun and shoot at his own assassins. But King Zog is not the only reason why the story of Albania before and during World War 1 is so fascinating and complicated.

i/ælˈbeɪniə/, al-BAY-nee-ə, or sometimes /ɔːlˈbeɪniə/, awl-BAY-nee-ə; Albanian: Shqipëri/Shqipëria; Gheg Albanian: Shqipni/Shqipnia, Shqypni/Shqypnia), officially known as the Republic of Albania (Albanian: Republika e Shqipërisë; Albanian pronunciation: [ɾɛpuˈblika ɛ ʃcipəˈɾiːs]), is a country in Southeastern Europe. It is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, the Republic of Macedonia to the east, and Greece to the south and southeast. It has a coast on the Adriatic Sea to the west and on the Ionian Sea to the southwest. It is less than 72 km (45 mi) from Italy, across the Strait of Otranto which connects the Adriatic Sea to the Ionian Sea.
The modern-day territory of Albania was at various points in history part of the Roman provinces of Dalmatia (southern Illyricum), Macedonia (particularly Epirus Nova), and Moesia Superior. The modern Republic became independent after the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in Europe following the Balkan Wars. Albania declared independence in 1912 and was recognized the following year. It then became a Principality, Republic, and Kingdom until being invaded by Italy in 1939, which formed Greater Albania. The latter eventually turned into a Nazi German protectorate in 1943. The following year, a socialist People's Republic was established under the leadership of Enver Hoxha and the Party of Labour. Albania experienced widespread social and political transformations during the communist era, as well as isolationism from much of the international community. In 1991, the Socialist Republic was dissolved and the Republic of Albania was established.

Zog I of Albania
Zog I, King of the Albanians (Albanian: Nalt Madhnija e Tij Zogu I, Mbreti i Shqiptarëvet, IPA: [ˈzɔɡu]; 8 October 1895 – 9 April 1961), born Ahmet Muhtar Zogolli, taking the surname Zogu from 1922, was the leader of Albania from 1925 to 1939, first as President (1925–1928) and then as King (1928–1939). Earlier he served as Prime Minister of Albania (1922–1924).
Background and early political career
Zog was born Ahmet Muhtar Zogolli in Burgajet Castle, near Burrel in the northern part of the Albanian section of the Ottoman Empire, second son to Xhemal Pasha Zogolli, and first son by his second wife Sadijé Toptani in 1895. His family was a beylik family of landowners, with feudal authority over the region of Mati. His mother's Toptani family claimed to be descended from the sister of Albania's greatest national hero, the 15th century general Skanderbeg. He was educated at Galatasaray High School (Lycée Impérial de Galatasaray) in Constantinople, then the seat of the decaying Ottoman Empire, which controlled Albania. Upon his father's death in 1911, Zogolli became governor of Mat, being appointed ahead of his elder brother, Xhelal Bey Zogolli.

STORYLINE:
Albania's top leaders and thousands of people paid their last respects on Saturday, to the country's only post-independence monarch, King Ahmet Zog I, half a century after he died and was buried in exile.
The nation's television stations broadcast live the burial ceremony in the capital Tirana, a day after Zog's remains were returned from France.
The remains were exhumed at Thiais cemetery south of Paris on Tuesday.
He was buried in the family's mausoleum, alongside his Hungarian wife, Queen Geraldina, his son Leka I and his wife Susan.
Zog proclaimed himself Albania's monarch in 1928 and ruled until 1939 when he fled after Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's Fascist troops invaded Albania.
In exile, he lived for many years in England, then Egypt, before settling in France where he died in 1961.
Albania's post-World War II communist regime abolished the monarchy in 1946.
Albania remains a parliamentary republic after the fall of communism in 1990.
The royal family returned to Albania in 2002, leading a quiet life though never relinquishing the claim to the throne.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that Albanians honoured Zog for his "contribution in building up this country."
Berisha was joined at the ceremony by President Bujar Nishani and Kosovo's President Ahtifete Jahjaga.
The ceremony was ignored by the country's opposition parties.
After Albania's Communist regime fell in 1990, Zog's son, Leka I Zog, made two disastrous attempts to return home - first in 1993 when Berisha's government threw him out, and in 1997 when he was charged with leading an armed uprising after failing to convince Albanians to vote for a monarchy in a referendum.
Since then, the family has been given back some of its old royal properties and granted diplomatic passports.
Zog's grandson, Leka II Zog, has since served as an adviser to several Albanian governments.
Albania is currently celebrating the centenary of its independence from the Ottoman Empire.

"This for us, for the Albanian people, is an evaluation of the figure of the King Ahmet Zog. 50 years ago he died in Paris, France and the regime that followed did not allow him to return and rest in his homeland. Today, we're in a democracy and he will rest in his native land. In the land where he was born, raised and served the Albanian nation."

STORYLINE:
Albania's top leaders and thousands of people paid their last respects on Saturday, to the country's only post-independence monarch, King Ahmet Zog I, half a century after he died and was buried in exile.
The nation's television stations broadcast live the burial ceremony in the capital Tirana, a day after Zog's remains were returned from France.
The remains were exhumed at Thiais cemetery south of Paris on Tuesday.
He was buried in the family's mausoleum, alongside his Hungarian wife, Queen Geraldina, his son Leka I and his wife Susan.
Zog proclaimed himself Albania's monarch in 1928 and ruled until 1939 when he fled after Italian dictator Benito Mussolini's Fascist troops invaded Albania.
In exile, he lived for many years in England, then Egypt, before settling in France where he died in 1961.
Albania's post-World War II communist regime abolished the monarchy in 1946.
Albania remains a parliamentary republic after the fall of communism in 1990.
The royal family returned to Albania in 2002, leading a quiet life though never relinquishing the claim to the throne.
Prime Minister Sali Berisha said that Albanians honoured Zog for his "contribution in building up this country."
Berisha was joined at the ceremony by President Bujar Nishani and Kosovo's President Ahtifete Jahjaga.
The ceremony was ignored by the country's opposition parties.
After Albania's Communist regime fell in 1990, Zog's son, Leka I Zog, made two disastrous attempts to return home - first in 1993 when Berisha's government threw him out, and in 1997 when he was charged with leading an armed uprising after failing to convince Albanians to vote for a monarchy in a referendum.
Since then, the family has been given back some of its old royal properties and granted diplomatic passports.
Zog's grandson, Leka II Zog, has since served as an adviser to several Albanian governments.
Albania is currently celebrating the centenary of its independence from the Ottoman Empire.

Tirana, the heart and capital of Albania, like all other European metropolises has a never-ending movement and energy. With its clubs, pubs, cafes, and taverns, Tirana is worth to discover, both day and night. The value and hospitality shown towards tourists is something that will mark your journey not only in Tirana but also all over the country. There are different thoughts regarding the origin of the name of the city. Some think that it relates to Tyrrenia (a name of Etruscan origins), while other believe that it relates to the word Theranda (harvest), or to the Tirkan (a castle at the foot of Mount Dajti). Your own journey might begin by visiting the museums and the key spots such as Sheshi Skënderbej, where you will be able to see the Mosque of Et’hem Bey (built between 1798 and 1812) and the 35 m high Kulla e Sahatit (the Watch Tower), built in 1822 with a San Marco style cupola. Moreover, you can visit the famous Mosaic uncovered on the floor of an old Roman lodge. Its center configures the walls of the castle of the Roman emperor Justinian (A.D. 520). The monumental Tomb of Kapllan Pasha and the Ura e Tabakëve (a bridge constructed in the beginning of the 19th century, located on Bulevardi Zhan D’Ark) are other interesting place to visit. As a capital, Tirana has the country’s finest museums, theatres, and galleries representing the national arts. A visit to the National History Museum, the Archeological Museum, the private “Mezuraj Museum,” and the National Gallery of the Arts will leave wonderful memories. You can also pass a pleasant evening in the National Theatre or the Opera and Ballet Theatre.
For dining, Tirana will be glad to offer you both a rich traditional cuisine and a variety of foreign fares, from Italian to Chinese, . There are also several clubs and restaurants in Mount Dajti to discover and enjoy. There is the possibility to travel there by cable car, which is a very special experience. In the region of Tirana you may also visit the castles of Petrela and Preza, as well as some natural attractions, such as Pëllumbasi Cave, Shkalla e Tujanit, and much more.
