Volker Schlöndorff born in Wiesbaden, Germany on March 31, 1939 is a Berlin-based German filmmaker who won an Oscar as well as the Palme d'or at the Cannes Film Festival for The Tin Drum 1979, the film version of the novel by Nobel Prize-winning author Günter Grass. Volker Schlöndorff studied economy and political sciences at the Institut des Hautes Etudes Cinematographique IDHEC in Paris, France and worked as an assistant director with Louis Malle, Jean-Pierre Melville and Alain Resnais. Schlöndorff has adapted many literary works for his movies, including some critically well-received US productions, directed several operas in Frankfurt, Berlin Germany and Paris, France and is engaged in post-war German politics. Since 1992 he served as the chief executive of the german production company UFA Studio Babelsberg GmbH former UFA/DEFA. In 1973 Volker Schlöndorff founded his own production company Bioskop Film together with Reinhard Hauff and Eberhard Junkersdorf. Volker Schlöndorff is a professor for film and literature at the European Graduate School in Saas-Fee, Switzerland, where he conducts an Intensive Summer Seminar. He was married to fellow film director Margarethe von Trotta from 1971 to 1991.
