The Century: America's Time is a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company about the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. The documentary originally aired on The History Channel in 1999. Another earlier series, simply called "The Century" also produced by ABC, appeared on the ABC network in 1999, and also later appeared on the History Channel. It consists of six two-hour shows with each chronicling two different events based around a common theme. The narrator of both series was Peter Jennings, anchor from ABC World News Tonight.
Along with distinguished journalist Todd Brewster, Jennings co-authored a book titled The Century which became a national bestseller. This series is part of the History Channel's "Cable in The Classroom" curriculum and the study guides for each episode can be found on their website, under the letter "C".
ABC ran a mini-marathon of the series on Saturday September 15, 2001 in reaction to the September 11th Attacks. The marathon signaled the transition from 24/7 news coverage, which had gone uninterrupted since the first reports of an incident at the World Trade Center, back to "normal" programming.

Part eight of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. After the initial jubilation at the end of World War II, America faced severe domestic demographic problems and the international specter of communism and the Cold War. In response to the serious housing shortages exacerbated by the high marriage rates and subsequent baby boom of returning soldiers and the girls they left behind, the Truman administration created the GI Bill, which enabled veterans to secure low interest mortgages and college educations. But the domestic bliss of new homes and growing families could not alleviate the growing fears and hysteria of the new atomic age, and a demagogue from Wisconsin, Senator J...

Part six of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. World War II was a total global conflict that affected and changed not only the lives of soldiers fighting the war but also those of non-combatants living in war zones. The scale of the war encompassed three continents and millions of people. This episode analyzes the human costs of total warfare from the barbarity of Hitler's "Final Solution," to the atrocities committed by the Japanese against the Chinese people, to the devastation wreaked by the atomic bomb. At the end of the war, for the first time in history, the Axis leaders were held accountable for their "crimes against humanity," but the allied leaders were hailed as ...

Part twelve of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. The turbulence of the 1960s paved the way for the election of Richard Nixon. Distraught at the violence and unrest of the nation, Nixon's "Silent Majority" voted loudly. But the turmoil of the decade continued with riots and generational conflicts, and, despite the success of Apollo 11 and Nixon's historic trip to China, the era ended in the disgrace of Watergate and the fall of Saigon. Part three of a 12-part documentary series produced by the American Broadcasting Company and anchored by Peter Jennings. In a fierce cautionary tale, a down-and-out drifter turned demagogue worked his way from prison to ultimate power by employing a beguiling combination of lying, luck, clever political maneuvering, and murder. We all know what Adolf Hitler did once in power, but few remember or understand the amazing tale of his evil rise. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/GThe/
Part four of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. The stock market crash of 1929 ushered in the greatest period of economic malaise in America's history. The Great Depression shaped the atmosphere for a decade; the most prosperous country on earth could not feed its own citizens. But even as Americans were trying to cope with poverty and hunger, the rumblings of a demagogue across the water became louder and louder. This episode examines the Great Depression and the decade of the 1930s, covering events such as the Bonus Army March, movies and radio, the Dust Bowl, FDR and the New Deal and the rise of Hitler in Germany. Part fourteen of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. As the 1970s gave way to the 1980s, Americans were ready for a more conservative leader and they found the answer to their quest in Ronald Reagan. Reagan's folksy ways and familiar face created an aura of trust and he became one of America's most popular presidents. But Reagan's homespun ways could not forestall the economic crises of the 1980s and the widening economic divide between the haves and the have-nots. This episode examines some of the major events of the 1980s including the recession, AIDS, Wall Street, MTV, terrorism, televangelism and the fall of communism. Mystery Of Life | 10 Tragic Cases From Turn Of The Century Insane Asylums From the end of the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th, the world’s insane asylums were horrible places packed with people who did not belong there. The term “insane” covered everything from severe mental illness to stress from overwork. Sometimes, women afflicted with the terrible tendency to speak their minds were also deemed “insane.” Most of the people who entered asylums never left. They remained nameless, faceless sufferers whose stories were forgotten. There are some, though, who either lived to tell their tales or whose memories survive in the letters they wrote

He virtually invented modern stand-up comedy. His tours to entertain Us troops and patriotic radio broadcasts, along with his all-american, brash-but-cowardly movie character, helped to ease the nation's jitters during the stressful days of World War Ii. He helped redefine the very notion of what it means to be a star: a savvy businessman, pioneer of the brand extension (churning out books, writing a newspaper column, hosting a golf tournament), and public-spirited entertainer whose Christmas militar...

Part two of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. From the assassination of Archduke Ferdinand in Sarejevo in June of 1914 to Armistice Day in November of 1918, the world was embroiled in the First World War. World War I not only shaped much of the events of the twentieth century but also was truly unique since it was the first "mechanized" war. This episode documents the development of the war and American foreign policy regarding both war and peace. Help us caption & translate this video! http://amara.org/v/GTiD/
Part ten of a 15-part series of documentaries produced by the American Broadcasting Company on the 20th century and the rise of the United States as a superpower. The first few years of the 1960s promised a greater, stronger and more unified America than ever. America, as the undisputed leader of the free world, straddled the globe like Colossus. But within a few years the optimism of the first years of the decade would vanish, only to be replaced by the uncertainty of a new and unfamiliar world, and the national mourning of a fallen leader. This episode covers the years 1960-1963, and examines the events of the era such as the lunch counter sit-ins at Greensboro, North Carolina, the Kennedy years, the Cuban Missile Crisis and America's increasing involvement in Vietnam. The episode ends ...
You couldn't escape this music even if your name's Houdini
Our tracks, they last for Life and don't disappear like a genie
Communicating through your airwaves like a giant C.B.
'Cause this one's for your radios over, do you receive me?
Our music is so hot, it feels like the sun in Tahiti
We rickety rock, Gorillaz style is buck wild, believe me
We heavyweights who phase ya like Ali did with Frasier
We spit the most flava but musically we'll amaze ya
We've been blessed and we've been gifted like Jesus in His manger
Won't you shout Hallelujah! Here comes your music savior?
From your heart to your mind, your spirits to your souls
We come to take control with the Gorillaz on patrol
See, our rhymes possess the powers of a superhero
Supernaturally, we rock the mic but wit' a natural flow
If you didn't know before, you know now, we told you so
Gorillaz rock your dome just like the one in Tokyo
It's a hard dream to contemplate, I could fall into the abyss
And I love this interlude, it's the reason to deliver
And they called onto me, says they came to talk to me though
The more of us that lies, I guess kids don't live or die
'Cause we're makin' this music that's making you lose it
So, people don't abuse it and there ain't no way for you to refuse it
Gorillaz be the army that's startin' this pardy ardy
Makin' more noise than carnivals mixed with the mardi gradi
We're comin' through your town with the sound that's so profound
Gorillaz with the rappers that straight from the underground
We're tearin' it down, makin' you feel this sort of force
Knockin' you to your senses and knockin' you off your course
'Cause we're the source, got you feelin' that so appealing
We got you jumpin' around and bouncin' off of the ceiling
Makin' music ya feeling from Baltimore into Bristol
I know you're hearin' me 'cause my voice is clearer than crystal
The casual, supernatural flows I be exposin'
Makin' sure that you're frozen and makin' sure that I'm chosen
To rip a score, we make you damage the dance floor
Gorillaz and Phi Life'll give you what you ask for
It's a hard dream to contemplate, I could fall into the abyss
And I love this interlude, it's the reason to deliver
And they called onto me, says they came to talk to me though
The more of us that lies, I guess kids don't live or die
Let Gorillaz be you guiding light and your shining star
Whether you be home alone or drivin' in your car
Don't matter who ya are, whether you be near or far
You'll be feelin' entertained by our music repertoire
See, our poems, they be flowin' like rivers and reservoirs
'Cause Gorillaz, we be out in this world like men of mars
We rap stars with supernatural spars
We leave your brains amazed with this super music of ours
So put yous hands up and stand up, it's time to get down
'Cause Gorillaz and Phi Life, we be breakin' you 'round
From the right to the left, from the skies to the ground
We're coverin' all angles and you can't escape the sound
On the track, it's laid back, we've come to spray raps
Keep it chilled and relaxed but we still sound phat
It's like that, when we write raps
We're not from the empire but we still strike back
So put your hands up and stand up, it's time to get down
Gorillaz and Phi Life, we be breakin' you 'round
So put your hands up and stand up, it's time to get down
Gorillaz and Phi Life, we be breakin' you 'round
So put your hands up and stand up, it's time to get down
Gorillaz and Phi Life, we be breakin' you 'round
