Pirueye -《百求恩》Bai Qiu En - Dr. Norman Bethune Bethune in China His public speaking tour was barely under way, however, when the Japanese launched a vile attack on China. It became obvious to him that China needed help even more urgently than Spain. Bethune left Vancouver for China on January 2, 1938. When the Chinese leader, Chairman Mao, received him, Bethune enquired concerning the number of mobile medical units functioning with the army. Learning that there were none and that many soldiers were dying because of the lack of facilities to treat them, Bethune emphasized the need to organize such services at once. Early in May 1938, Bethune left for the mountain ranges in the north where the fighting was extremely fierce. There were only a few qualified doctors to care for the 13 million people in the area. Bethune organized the training of individuals to provide basic first aid and sanitation services and to carry out simple surgical procedures. Despite many problems, Bethune established over twenty training and nursing hospitals. Whenever it was necessary, Bethune operated, sometimes at a prodigious rate. He once operated for sixty-nine hours straight to attend to the needs of 115 individuals. One time, Dr. Bethune was frantically operating on a wounded soldier who was near death. The fellow Chinese doctors burst open the door, "Dr. Bethune! The Japanese soldiers are coming! We must leave immediately!" "No!" Dr. Bethune replied, removing another bullet from the soldier's chest. "But Dr. Bethune, he is just one soldier. In a few minutes, we'll all be dead!" "This is my Chinese brother," Dr. Bethune retorted, "I must save his life at any cost! You can all leave. I must stay to save his life." The gunshots were coming closer and closer. Dr. Bethune's assistants pleaded with him, "We cannot let you stay here. We must go now!" The Japanese are coming. They're coming!" Dr. Bethune ignored them, his hands moving at lightning speed to remove the final bullet and stitch the soldier up. He narrowly escaped. He saved the soldier's life. Word was passed from mouth to mouth of the amazing Canadian doctor who shared his clothes, his food, and even his blood with wounded soldiers and civilians. Late in October 1939, while operating on a wounded soldier, barehanded because there were no surgical gloves, Bethune accidentally cut his left hand with his scalpel. Immediately he plunged his hand into an iodine solution to disinfect the cut but continued operating. It wasn't the first time he had cut himself in an operation. He was sure this would heal, given careful attention. But the cut did not heal. Despite their best efforts to drain the infection, it spread. His hand and then his arm became badly swollen. Blood poisoning had set in; his whole body was infected. In the West, there were drugs that might have saved him. But there were none in that remote, war-torn northwest corner of China. Dr. Norman Bethune died of blood poisoning on November 12, 1939. The leader of China, Mao Zedong, wrote an essay in memory of Bethune in which he spoke of Bethune's "spirit of absolute selflessness". It later became required reading in China appearing in every textbook in every school in every city of China. Bethunes picture appeared on posters and postage stamps. Dr. Norman Bethunes selfless work as a surgeon, teacher, founder, and administrator of hospitals in China, established an eternal bond of friendship between the Chinese and Canadian people. This heroic, outstanding Canadian gave his life for his Chinese brethren.
