Jesse James (1939) is a western movie directed by Henry King and starring Tyrone Power, Henry Fonda, Nancy Kelly, and Randolph Scott. Written by Nunnally Johnson, the film is loosely based on the life of the notorious outlaw for which the film derives its name. It is "notorious for its historical inaccuracy."
The American Humane Association began to oversee filmmaking after a horse died when it was driven off a cliff on set.

Plot: Surrounded by whisky-fueled outlaws and a treacherous wilderness, how is one to survive? Based on real events, this Texas based tale uncovers the mystery of the events surrounding the legendary Hell's Gate, a cliff formation that rises out of Possum Kingdom Lake in Texas. When a curious errand boy catches wind of one of America's most infamous crimes, he falls in with two desperate men on the wrong side of the law. Crossing paths with some of the West's most notorious figures, these three outlaws fight for their lives in the pursuit of fame and riches. Few are to be trusted, as their interwoven stories prove that everyone has a hidden agenda, and by no means is anyone innocent. Fueled by a talented ensemble cast THE LEGEND OF HELL'S GATE blends legend and history into a Western spectacle that recounts the treacherous existence in post Civil War Texas.

Plot: Jesse James leaves Missouri for Mississippi, and immediately charms all the women in Mississippi out of their bloomers and garters. His first conquest is the banker's daughter who helps him loot the bank in exchange for a promise of marriage; he wanders over to the saloon and runs the crooked partner of the proprietress out of town, takes all of his-and-her money and leaves her, between kisses, hounding him for her share; the third one, the saloon singer, actually makes a mark out of him as she cons him into a boxing match against a professional fighter and he loses the fight and his money, but he holds the singer and the fighter up as they leave town and gets his money back; and then he romances and swindles Cattle Kate, a replay of what he had done somewhere before to Kate and the "gotcha-again" Kate even ends up behind bars. But no film that contains a cat-fight between Peggie Castle and Lita Baron can be called a complete waste of time.

In his trouble, the spirit of Andrew Jackson, whom he idolizes, visits him, and in turn, summons much high-powered talent from American history...which only Andrew can see. Can he get out of trouble before too many people think he's crazy?

Has killed him many a man
He robbed the Union trains
But history does record
That Bob and Charlie Ford
Have laid Jesse James in his grave
It was on a Saturday night
The stars were shining bright
When they robbed that Union train
And it was one of the younger boys
That gathered in the spoils
And carried that money away
In his small home unaware
A-straightening pictures there
He thought he heard a noise
And as he turned his head
Well, the bullet killed him dead
Fired by Bob Ford, one of the boys
Poor Jesse had a wife
She lived a lady all her life
The children they were brave
But history does record
That Bob and Charlie Ford
Have laid poor Jesse, laid poor Jesse
