On August 7th 1974, a young Frenchman called Philippe Petit stepped out on a wire suspended between New York's twin towers, then the world’s tallest buildings. After an hour dancing on the wire, with no safety net or harness, he was arrested and thrown into an underground prison. Until that moment no one but Petit and his team of accomplices, who had spent months planning their illegal 'coup' (as they referred to it amongst themselves) knew anything about it.
Born out of a dream and an idea, Petit and his team of accomplices spent eight months planning the execution of their 'coup' in the most intricate detail. Like a team of professional bank robbers planning their most ambitious heist, the tasks they faced seemed virtually insurmountable: they would have to find a way to bypass the WTC's security; to smuggle the wire and rigging equipment into the towers; to suspend the wire between the two towers; to secure the wire at the correct tension to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings; to rig it secretly by night – all without being caught. Not to mention the walk itself...
Directed by James Marsh (The King, Wisconsin Death Trip), Man on Wire brings Petit's extraordinary adventure to life through the testimony of all the co-conspirators who created the single, beautiful spectacle that became known as "the artistic crime of the century".

Marsh also commented that as a New Yorker himself, he saw the film as something to give back to the city. He said he hopes to hear people say that they will now always think of Petit and his performance when recalling the World Trade Center's twin towersResponding to questioning as to why the towers' destruction 27 years later was not mentioned in the film, Marsh explained that Phillippe Petit's act was "incredibly beautiful" and that it "would be unfair and wrong to infect his story with any mention, discussion or imagery of the Towers being destroyed.The film's producer, Simon Chinn, first encountered Philippe Petit in 2005 on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs when he decided to pursue him for the film rights to his book, To Reach the Clouds.
Man on Wire has won the prestigious Special Jury Award and Audience Award at the Full Frame Documentary Film Festival, the International Audience Award at the Los Angeles Film Festival and the Standard Life Audience Award at the Edinburgh International Film The film has also won the Jury Prize and Audience Award in the World Cinema: Documentary competition at the Sundance Film Festival. To date, Man on Wire is only the sixth film ever in the history of Sundance to pick up both top awards and the first from outside the USFilm review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes reported that 100% of the 136 reviews they have collected have been positive, making it "The Best of All Time" reviewed film on their site.

Man on Wire
Man on Wire is a 2008 British-American biographical documentary film directed by James Marsh. The film chronicles Philippe Petit's 1974 high-wire walk between the Twin Towers of New York's World Trade Center. It is based on Petit's book, To Reach the Clouds, released in paperback with the title Man on Wire. The title of the film is taken from the police report that led to the arrest (and later release) of Petit, whose performance had lasted for almost one hour. The film is crafted like a heist film, presenting rare footage of the preparations for the event and still photographs of the walk, alongside re-enactments (with Paul McGill as the young Petit) and present-day interviews with the participants, including Barry Greenhouse, an insurance executive who served as the inside man.
Man on Wire competed in the World Cinema Documentary Competition at the 2008 Sundance Film Festival, where it won the Grand Jury Prize: World Cinema Documentary and the World Cinema Audience Award: Documentary. In February 2009, the film won the BAFTA for Outstanding British Film, the Independent Spirit Awards, and the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature.

Born out of a dream and an idea, Petit and his team of accomplices spent eight months planning the execution of their 'coup' in the most intricate detail. Like a team of professional bank robbers planning their most ambitious heist, the tasks they faced seemed virtually insurmountable: they would have to find a way to bypass the WTC's security; to smuggle the wire and rigging equipment into the towers; to suspend the wire between the two towers; to secure the wire at the correct tension to withstand the winds and the swaying of the buildings; to rig it secretly by night – all without being caught. Marsh also commented that as a New Yorker himself, he saw the film as something to give back to the city. He said he hopes to hear people say that they will now always think of Petit and his performance when recalling the World Trade Center's twin towersResponding to questioning as to why the towers' destruction 27 years later was not mentioned in the film, Marsh explained that Phillippe Petit's act was "incredibly beautiful" and that it "would be unfair and wrong to infect his story with any mention, discussion or imagery of the Towers being destroyed.The film's producer, Simon Chinn, first encountered Philippe Petit in 2005 on BBC Radio 4's Desert Island Discs when he decided to pursue him for the film rights to his book, To Reach the Clouds.

A 25-year-old French daredevil did a tightrope walk across the top of New York in 1974 - on a 131-foot cable strung between the 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center. The aerialist, accomplished juggler and unicyclist, is Philippe Petit, who said, “I see three oranges and I have to juggle. I see two towers and I have to walk.” The stroll, 1,350 feet above street level, lasted 50 minutes, from 7:05 to 7:55 a.m. Four times the 25-year-old Petit, who started out from the north tower, walked to a point near the south tower and then back north. A 25-year-old French daredevil did a tightrope walk across the top of New York in 1974 - on a 131-foot cable strung between the 110-story twin towers of the World Trade Center. The aerialist, accomplished juggler and unicyclist, is Philippe Petit, who said, “I see three oranges and I have to juggle. I see two towers and I have to walk.” The stroll, 1,350 feet above street level, lasted 50 minutes, from 7:05 to 7:55 a.m. Four times the 25-year-old Petit, who started out from the north tower, walked to a point near the south tower and then back north. Once he sat down on the wire cable - which is an inch in diameter - and another time he lay down on his back on the cable.

BOYLE HEIGHTS - A man in his early 40s suffered electrical burns and other major injuries early today in Boyle Heights after being shocked by a high tension wire and then falling an estimated 100 feet onto pads placed on the ground, authorities said.
A Los Angeles Police Department Hollenbeck Division officer said the man climbed an electrical pole at the intersection of Marengo and North State streets about 1:50 a.m.
