Myeik (Burmese: မြိတ်မြို့; MLCTS: mrit mrui., pronounced: [mjeɪʔ mjo̰] or [beɪʔ mjo̰]; Mon: ဗိက်, [pòik]; Thai: มะริด, rtgs: Marit, pronounced [má(ʔ).rít]; formerly Mergui) is a city in Tanintharyi Region in Myanmar (Burma), located in the extreme south of the country on the coast of an island on the Andaman Sea. As of 2010 the estimated population was over 209,000. The area inland from the city is a major smuggling corridor into Thailand. The Singkhon Pass, also known as the Maw-daung Pass, has an international cross-border checkpoint.
Myeik was the southernmost part of the Pagan Kingdom between the 11th and 13th centuries. After the Pagan Empire's collapse in 1287, Myeik became part of successive Thai kingdoms from the late 13th century to the middle of 18th century: first the Sukhothai Kingdom and later the Ayutthaya Kingdom. A brief period of Bamar rule interrupted this between 1564-93.
From the 16th century on, the city was an important seaport and trading center with the Europeans, who would land at Myeik (then called Mergui), travel upriver to Tanintharyi (Tenasserim) and then cross the mountains to reach Ayutthaya. The French officer Chevalier de Beauregard was made Governor of the city of Myeik after the Siam-England war (1687) that resulted in the English being expelled from Siam. De Beauregard was named Governor by Narai, the king of the Ayutthaya Kingdom, replacing an Englishman, Samuel White. The French were then expelled from Myeik following the Siamese revolution of 1688.
The Mergui Archipelago (also Myeik Archipelago or Myeik Kyunzu; Burmese: မြိတ်ကျွန်းစု) is an archipelago in far southern Myanmar (Burma) and is part of the Tanintharyi Region. It consists of more than 800 islands, varying in size from very small to hundreds of square kilometres, all lying in the Andaman Sea off the western shore of the Malay Peninsula near its landward (northern) end where it joins the rest of Indochina. Occasionally the islands are referred to as the Pashu Islands because the Malay inhabitants are locally called Pashu. A five-star casino and golf resort, the Andaman Club now operates on Thahtay Kyun Island.
Geologically, the islands are characterized mainly by limestone and granite. They are generally covered with thick tropical growth, including rainforest, and their shorelines are punctuated by beaches, rocky headlands, and in some places, mangrove swamps. Offshore are extensive coral reefs.
The archipelago's virtual isolation from most of mankind's influence on the natural environment has given the islands and the surrounding waters of the Andaman Sea a great diversity of flora and fauna, contributing to the region's growing popularity as a diving destination, representing megafaunas such as whale sharks and even killer whales.
The Andaman Sea (Bengali: আন্দামান সাগর; Hindi: अंडमान सागर) is a body of water to the southeast of the Bay of Bengal, south of Myanmar (Burma), west of Thailand, north-west of Malay Peninsula, north of Sumatra and east of the Andaman Islands, India, from which it takes its name; it is part of the Indian Ocean.
The sea has been traditionally used for fishery and transportation of goods between the coastal countries and its coral reefs and islands are popular tourist destinations. The fishery and tourist infrastructure was severely damaged by the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami.
At its southeastern reaches, the Andaman Sea narrows to form the Straits of Malacca, which separate the Malay Peninsula from the island of Sumatra.
The International Hydrographic Organization defines the limits of the "Andaman or Burma Sea" as follows:
On the Northwest. The Eastern limit of the Bay of Bengal [A line running from Cape Negrais (16°03'N) in Burma [Myanmar] through the larger islands of the Andaman group, in such a way that all the narrow waters between the islands lie to the Eastward of the line and are excluded from the Bay of Bengal, as far as a point in Little Andaman Island in latitude 10°48'N, longitude 92°24'E].
The Similan Islands (Thai: หมู่เกาะสิมิลัน, Thai pronunciation: [mùː kɔ̀ʔ si.mi.lan], Malay: Pulau Sembilan سمبيلن ڤولاو) is a group of islands in the Andaman Sea off the coast of, and part of, Phang Nga Province, southern Thailand. It is a national park which was established in 1982.
Similan Islands National Park was established after a one-year exploration by the forestry department. The park is an archipelago consisting of nine islands named Ko Tachai, Ko Bon, Ko Bangu, Ko Similan, Ko Payu, Ko Hok, Ko Ha, Ko Miang, Ko Payan, Ko Payang, and Ko Huyong. Recently, the park was expanded to include two remote islands named Ko Bon and Ko Tachai. The Similans are situated 70 kilometres from Phang Nga town. "Similan" is a Yawi word which means "nine". Bon and Tachai islands were added to the national park in 1998.
The islands are at 8°39′09″N 97°38′27″E / 8.65250°N 97.64083°E / 8.65250; 97.64083
Ko Similan is the largest island. There are a total of 11 islands. The sea in the area has an average depth of 60 feet. Underwater it is full of rock formations and coral reefs in several shapes and forms, resembling such things as deer, leaves, brains, and mushrooms.
An archipelago (i/ɑːrkᵻˈpɛləɡoʊ/ ark-i-PEL-ə-goh), sometimes called an island group or island chain, is a chain, cluster or collection of islands. The word archipelago is derived from the Greek ἄρχι- – arkhi- ("chief") and πέλαγος – pélagos ("sea") through the Italian arcipelago. In Italian, possibly following a tradition of antiquity, the Arcipelago (from medieval Greek *ἀρχιπέλαγος and Latin archipelagus) was the proper name for the Aegean Sea and, later, usage shifted to refer to the Aegean Islands (since the sea is remarkable for its large number of islands). It is now used to refer to any island group or, sometimes, to a sea containing a small number of scattered islands.
Archipelagos may be found isolated in bodies of water or neighboring a large land mass. For example, Scotland has more than 700 islands surrounding its mainland which constitute an archipelago. Archipelagos are often volcanic, forming along island arcs generated by subduction zones or hotspots, but may also be the result of erosion, deposition, and land elevation. Depending on their geological origin, islands forming archipelagos can be referred to as oceanic islands, continental fragments, and continental islands. Oceanic islands are mainly of volcanic origin. Continental fragments correspond to land masses that have separated from a continental mass due to tectonic displacement. Finally, sets of islands formed close to the coast of a continent are considered continental archipelagos when they form part of the same continental shelf so islands are just exposed continental shelf.

Our Islands Safari starts in the bustling harbor of Kawthaung (formally called Victoria Point) in Myanmar closed to the border town Ranong (300 km north of Phuket) in Thailand and heads towards the Mergui Archipelago. Once we left the lively border trade town, you will enter a part of the world that has hardly been explored and immerse yourself in one of the most remote and culturally interesting off-shore paradises. The vast majority of the 800 islands are still uninhabited and opened up for tourism only since 1997. The islands offer all the splendor and charm of Thailand’s famous beach holiday destinations, but none of the crowds. Join us on this soft adventure trip and cruise through a labyrinth of islands which only a handful of people have seen. We assure you, that you will feel the...
The Mergui archipelago, just north of Thailand is one of those places that sometimes feels like you’re exploring the new world. As you’ll see in this drone video by Tim Browning, the topography is a spellbinding combination of sea and mountains. Dunia Baru spent the beginning of 2016 cruising the Mergui archipelago in oblivion, not seeing another yacht for the entire time there. The owner and charter guests had such a great time, Dunia baru is headed back to Myanmar for the beginning of 2017. Very little information is available on Mergui through a Google search, which makes the archipelago of around 800 untouched islands all the more appealing. Most of islands are completely unspoiled: the diversity of flora and fauna on the islands is staggering, and marine life is prolific. Many i...

High End Corporate Video Production by http://8milesfromhome.com Sailing in Burma, Myanmar around the Mergui Archipelago Islands is an experience that very few people get to take. These 800 scarcely explored islands in the Andaman sea are a place of extreme beauty. Home to the Moken Sea Gypsy people, there are chances to see an ancient, remote way of living in the Moken communities. A collection of the best photos I shot, while working as a dive guide on liveaboard boats at the Similan Islands, Thailand and the Mergui Archipelago, Burma in the Andaman Sea. Similan Islands offers the best diving in Thailand with a huge variety of different dive sites and marine species. The Mergui Archipelago is a unique dive destination consisting of 800+ islands, which offers adventurous diving in pristine and unexplored seascapes, with a fantastic amount of marine life. Almost every single Moken survived the Tsunami of 2004, thanks to premonitions from their shamans and ancestral wisdom gained from generations of living intimately with the sea. Numbering less than 3,000 they are the nomads scattered throughout the Andaman Sea and the Mergui Archipelago of Thailand and Myanmar. Living symbiotically with the sea they have a relationship seamlessly integrated with one of the most powerful forces in nature that it has manifested in living myths. In the wake of the tsunami, the Moken have come under unprecedented pressure to assimilate into the mainstream and the mainland. This culture is evaporating and along with it their vast wisdom of the sea.The Moken, are a sea-faring nomadic group living upon the Andaman Sea spanning from Indonesia to Myanmar. ...
Liveaboard Blue Star to Mergui Archipelago, Burma in March 2010.
Whilst staying at the Andaman Island Resort in the Mergui Archipelago, the dive centre organised a weekly dive trip to dive Western Rocky, a remote outcrop in the Andaman Sea. The sail from MacLeod Island where the resort is situated, takes about 3 hours - on the way we were able to dive on another underwater pinnacle - the dive being called Sea Fan Forest due to the number of large Gorgonian Fan corals. Western Rocky is one of the normal dive sites on liveaboard itineraries from Thailand, but is generally seldom dived. Two pinnacles adjoin the main island - a pair of Sea Eagle were nesting there and provided above water entertainment. Below water the topography is fantastic - steep walls, arches and even a tunnel straight through the rock. Marine life at Western Rocky is excellent with ...

Backpacking this part of the world is a bit unheard of so going in, I wasn't sure exactly what I was getting myself into. My flight landed in Myeik and after a couple days meeting new friends, we headed on a day trip to a couple islands a few hours away. A few days later my new friend and I headed down south on a grueling thirty hour journey to get to a fishing village in the hope of finding a local fisherman to take us to an island. Luckily we did so we ended up staying on the island with the local tribes and fisherman's families for about four days. This video is just the highlights of the trip and does not include any of the extreme travel "inconveniences" en route to the island, nor the huge storm system that was going through while on the island and on the way back to civilizatio...

Myanmar Travel. Much more at http://www.allmyanmar.com and http://www.travel-myanmar-all.com with great pictures and videos. Myanmar or Burma is a prime travel destination if the target is to experience culture, friendly people, beautiful beaches, a grandiose landscape, lush tropical jungle, river cruise on one of Asia's most famous river, the mighty Ayeyarwady or Irrawaddy river. Myanmar travel could mean trekking in the untouched Myanmar Himalayas, exploring forgotten tribes like the Myanmar Naga and Chin near the border to India and many other. Myanmar travel could also be a tour into the pristine Myanmar islands world of the Mergui or Myeik archipelago were Salon or Moken sea gypsies still live in the same way as centuries ago.
Chorus: (2x)
Shiva god
Deepest love
Sweetest life I live
Destroy in my mind
Belive in my soul
What you will find
Will turn into gold
I want you to dance
My time won't run out
I will take a bow
I'm not gone around
Chorus (4x)
Don't bury my dream
And spell my belief
Don't waste bitter tears
Past will dsappear
I want you to dance
Make a room for the new
I will take a bow
Past will disappear
Chorus (4x)
My pain cuts so deep
Believe in my soul
What you will find
Will turn into gold
