The Motorlighter (bettolina)
A vessel is sailing the Ligurian sea in a cold night of February 1944 with a four German mariners crew; in front of Sestri Levante the soldiers hear a sudden whizzing, they discern a dark shape in the distance.
The machine-gun starts shooting, too late ..... a blasting tears the bow, the ship sinks.
The water is too cold for the crew, a tragic doom awaited him.

The Ligurian Sea is an arm of the Mediterranean Sea, between the Italian Riviera (Liguria and Tuscany) and the island of Corsica. The sea is probably named after the ancient Ligures people. The sea borders Italy as far as its border with France, and the French island of Corsica. In the east the sea borders the Tyrrhenian Sea, while in the west it borders the Mediterranean Sea proper. Genoa is the most prominent city in the area. The northwest coast is noted for its scenic beauty and favourable climate. The Gulf of Genoa is its northernmost part. The sea receives the Arno River from the east and many other rivers that originate in the Apennines. The ports of Genoa, La Spezia, and Livorno are on its rocky coast. It reaches a maximum depth of more than 9,300 feet (2,850 m) northwest of Corsica. In order to provide protection for the numerous cetacean (whales and dolphins; porpoises are not found in this part of the Mediterranean Sea) species in the Ligurian Sea the bordering countries established the sea as a SPAMI in 1999. The International Ligurian Sea Cetacean Sanctuary now covers 84,000 km² covering territorial waters as well as high sea.

Video di Immersioni d'autore, utilizzato per turismo in regione liguria.
On 11 April 1991, Haven was unloading a cargo of 230,000 tonnes of crude oil to the Multedo floating platform, seven miles off of the coast of Genoa, Italy. Having transferred 80,000 tonnes, she disconnected from the platform for a routine internal transfer operation, to allow oil to be pumped from two side-holds into a central one.
In later testimony, First Officer Donatos Lilis said: "I heard a very loud noise, like iron bars beating against each other. Perhaps the cover of a pump had broken. Then there was an awful explosion." Five crewmen died immediately, as fire broke out and oil started leaking from the hull as the plates overheated. As the fire engulfed the ship, flames rose 100m high and, after a series of further explosions occurred, between 30-40,000 tons of oil poured into the sea.
The Italian authorities acted quickly, with hundreds of men fighting a fire which was difficult to access, and distributing more than six miles of inflatable barriers, submerged a metre below the surface, around the vessel to control the spillage. On day two, MT Haven was to be towed close to the coast, in a bid to reduce the coastal area affected and make intervention easier. As the bow slipped beneath the surface, a steel cable was passed around the rudder and tugs applied towing pressure. But it was quickly clear that the ship had broken its keel, and the bow section came to rest in 450m of water. On 14 April, the 250m-long main body sank a mile and a half from the coast, between Arenzano and Varazze.

Wreck of MT Haven
After the wreck was declared safe, a mini sub diver found that the stern section had grazed a rocky spur, though fortunately not hard enough to open any new holes in the hull, and come to rest at an angle on the flat, sandy seabed. He reported that most of the remaining 80,000 tons of crude had burnt or was at the surface. Most of the oil on the surface could be sucked up, and what remained below was in a solid state. For the next 12 years the Mediterranean coast of Italy and France was polluted, especially around Genoa and southern France.
Haven is the largest shipwreck in the sea and lies at a depth of 33 to 83m off the coast of Genoa. It is a popular tourist attraction with deep sea divers

The wreck lies on a 26-31 meters deep bottom, in its full extent of 25 meters and with its charge of cement sacks.
The structures offer shelter and protection to a lot of marine creatures

The Italian Riviera, or Ligurian Riviera (Italian Riviera ligure) is the narrow coastal strip which lies between the Ligurian Sea and the mountain chain formed by the Maritime Alps and the Apennines. Longitudinally it extends from the border with France and the French Riviera (or Côte d'Azur) near Ventimiglia (a former customs post) to Capo Corvo (also known as Punta Bianca) which marks the Eastern end of the Gulf of La Spezia and is close to the border with Tuscany. The Italian Riviera thus includes nearly all of the coastline of Liguria. (Historically it extended further to the west, through what is now French territory as far as Monaco.)
Overview
The Riviera's centre is Genoa, which divides it into two main sections: the Riviera di Ponente ("the coast of the setting sun"), extending westwards from Genoa to the French border; and the Riviera di Levante ("the coast of the rising sun") between Genoa and Capo Corvo.
It is famous for its particularly mild climate which, together with the charm of its old fishing ports and the beauty of its landscape, has made it a popular destination for travellers and tourists since the time of Byron and Shelley.
Many villages and towns in the area are internationally known, such as Portofino, Bordighera, Lerici, and the Cinque Terre.
The part of the Riviera di Ponente centred on Savona, is called the "Riviera delle Palme" (the Riviera of palms); the part centered on Sanremo, is the "Riviera dei Fiori", after the long-established flower growing industry.

The Cinque Terre is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia. "The Five Lands" comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination.
The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive. (from Wikipedia)

Information on how to get to Cinque Terre Italy and Monterosso Beach:
Cinque Terre is along the southwest coast of Italy, just north of another favorite Italy travel destination, The Amalfi Coast. To get to Cinque Terre, there are many ways to get there, but we suggest you fly into Genoa (Genovo), then take the Trenitalia (Treno or Train), southbound into Cinque Terre. There is not an actual town called "Cinque Terre". Cinque Terre is made up of five beautiful beach towns, starting from North going South; Levanto, Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia and Monarola. The only two towns that have beaches are Levanto and Monterosso with Monterosso being the most lively and have the most to offer. As you can see from this video there are beautiful beach girls, beach side hotels and beach front cafe's to be enjoyed.

Take a tour of Rapallo Castle in Rapallo, Italy - part of the World's Greatest Attractions travel video series by GeoBeats.
The castle off the coast of Rapallo, Italy is considered a national treasure and a symbol of the city in which it resides.
This ancient fortification in the sea was built in 1551 to guard the city.
An attack by Turkish pirates two years earlier incited the locals to construct this protective structure.
The city itself is the largest town on the Italian Riviera, in the Liguria region of the northern Italy.
At the time of its construction the castle had only a dungeon and firing station, later, in the 17th century, another floor, captain's apartment, and tower were added.
The castle's foundation also includes a small 17th century chapel dedicated to the patron saint of good fortune.

Plan your Northern Italy vacation http://italiantourism.us/northern-italy-tours/ to tour the Cinque Terre located along Italian Riviera in the region of Liguria. The five villages, as Cinque Terre refers, are located in ravines between the cliffs and the Ligurian sea. These villages remain authentically unique -each with its own customs, dialect, and history. Today the Cinque Terre is a National Park. If the Cinque Terre is part of your Italy tour itinerary plan to relax, taste the local gelato, and hike or boat among the towns, and indulge in the local wine, seafood, and pastas. Pesto sauce was native to the area, as is great wines and seafood. The five towns Riomaggiore, Monterosso, Corniglia, Vernazza, and Manarola may be accessed by train, boat, and hiking. Cars are not required and can;t even make it to Vernazza. Levanto and Portovenere bookend the towns to the north and south respectively. A little further south in Tuscany is where you'll find Pisa, Lucca, and Pietrasanta some of the close by attractions when touring Cinque Terre. And around the Italian Riviera to the north is Portofino, Santa Margherita and finally Genoa. Corsica is widely known as the birthplace of Napoleon. In Ajaccio, everything reminds the traveler of the emperor: his house, the dome where he was christened, a museum, and the monuments… The island is full of high mountains and clear bays, but the most lasting experience is provided by the small cities like Calvi, Coste or Sarténe, with their characteristically Corsican style. Above the nice and various beaches there are many towers built under the Genovese rule. The city cores evoke the medieval France, while the magnificent mountains evoke the Alps. One cannot miss the Porto bay, the little villages famous of their craftsmanship, and Patrimonio with is well-known vineyard. One can take an unforgettable boat trip in the Bonifacio bay and in the sea caverns around the town. In the larger cities there are markets held on every weekend, and let us not forget that Corsica enchants people with the best of the French and local cuisine.

Basilicata is both the Italian and English name for the region.
The capital of Basilicata is Potenza.
Basilicata’s sole UNESCO World Heritage Site is the stunning Sassi in the old town of Matera – a collection of cave-like houses carved out of the rocky hills that date back in some cases 9,000+ years. Mel Gibson used the city of Matera and its ancient Sassi as the backdrop for his 2004 film, The Passion of the Christ.
Basilicata shares borders with Campania, Puglia, and Calabria, and touches two seas – the Tyrrhenian Sea and the Gulf of Taranto on the Ionian Sea.

San Remo,Ventimiglia,Bordighera,Albenga,Pietra Ligure ...
From Genoa to France (from the Province of Savona to that of Imperia), in the strip of land separating Italy from the French border lie the Riviera delle Palme and the Riviera dei Fiori, a magnificent succession of borgoes interspersed with the lush green of nature.
The Riviera delle Palme embraces the entirety of Savona Province, including Varazze and Spotorno, for more than 932 sq mi of coast, mountains and valleys where the inhabitants live a reality of the sea and green pines and olive trees.
Named as one of I Borghi più Belli d'Italia (Italy’s Most Beautiful Villages), Finale Ligure is composed of Finale Marina, with its splendid promenade and carruggi (tiny winding lanes and sidestreets), elegant shops and lively cafes; Finalpia and; a bit further inland, Finalborgo.
Pietra Ligure is a little seaside town surrounded by beautiful hills and vegetation, as well as by great beaches with hospitable accommodation and holiday resort structures. It is an important touristic destination, predominantly for those coming from northern Italy’s big cities.
Art, history, fun and sea, with seabeds making for a marvelous world unto themselves to be explored (above all, those around the Island of Gallinara, a Regional Natural Reserve since 1989) render Albenga one of the foremost cities on the Riviera di Ponente.
Not to be left out is Alassio, in part famous for its Muretto (wall) bearing the autographs of all the celebrities that chose to stay here; the Muretto also loans its name to a local beauty pageant that takes place every summer.
The last patch of western Liguria is the Riviera dei Fiori (i.e. of Flowers), well-known for its rather temperate climate.
This Riviera is studded with gems like San Remo, the “city of flowers” famous for its Italian Song Festival and for its Casino (while a lesser-known must is its giant and overflowing market). Not only, but San Remo also offers a panoramic and scenic golf course.
Bordighera, then, is one of the most refined localities on the coast, whence on clear days, you can see forever – or at least, all the way to Arma di Taggia (in the northeast) and to Monte Carlo (to the west and slightly south). Bordighera boasts palms so lovely they have also been exported to the Cote d’Azur.
The final Ponente Riviera community before the French border is Ventimiglia, part of which lies hidden on the left bank of the Roya River, and whose historic center conserves unique art treasures.

Corsica Travel Guide http://bit.ly/11TGWls
Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of Corsica, an island in the Mediterranean Sea, located west of Italy.
On the third biggest island of the western basin of the Mediterranean Sea, the French tricolor waves in the wind. The 183km long and 83km wide Corsica lies 170km from the mainland, 80kkm from the Italian coast and only 12km from Sardinia. The most southerly settlement of the island is Bonifacio. According to the famous Corsican borne French poet, Paul Valery, this is the most scenic town of the island. His opinion is shared by millions of tourists who go on pilgrimage to this island even every year. In Italian, the place which got its name from the margrave Bonifaz of Tuscany in 828, is pronounced Bonifacio and in French Bonifacio. The fortress and together with it the town also, later fell under Genoan, Pisan, French and then Turkish rule.
The harbor stretches along the side of a 1.5km long bay. The bay separated from the sea by a 60m high cliff. Its strategic importance is further enhanced by this citadel built on the cliff and the narrow entrance of the bay. The town endured many sieges and they collected rainwater in huge cisterns so even during the siege, they were not in want. Even the flying buttresses of the famous Santa Maria Majore serve to collect water in the cisterns carved in the rock under the hull. The Genoa gate was the only entrance to the upper town. Today, we can find here the municipal history museum. The 187 steps named after the king of Aragon was allegedly carved into the rock by the besiegers but a local woman Margarita Bobia discovered them so the attack failed.

Welcome to Liguria, one of the most beautiful region in Italy; it is situated in the North-West of Italy and it faces the Mediterranean Sea, near the border with France and very close to Milan.
The region of Liguria is famous all around the world for many famous places such as Portofino in the province of Genoa, the Italian Riviera, and the beautiful seaside where you can visit famous places such as Sanremo, Alassio, the Cinque Terre area in the Province of La Spezia, etc.... It is a land full of variety and full of contrasts: sea and mountains, sand and cliffs, alpine vegetation, parks under the sea and Mediterranean charm. The endless choice of itineraries are dedicated to culture, art, history, cuisine and physical activity: Liguria is an open-air gymnasium, with a wide range of outdoor sports to enjoy the unspoiled nature and climate; the geographical position of Liguria, facing the sea and surrounded by mountains, allows it to enjoy an essentially mild climate year-round, an important factor for the development of tourism in the region.
Liguria is the Italian region that for over than ten years has held the record for the Bandiere Blu (Blue Flags), the European recognition of the efforts for the superior quality of the water in the Ligurian Sea and its coast, rich in tourism ports and fishing boats. It offers numerous environmental resources with thirteen Natural Parks (such as Portofino's Park and Cinque Terre's Park) and the extensive protected area of The International Cetacean Sanctuary.
Liguria boasts an excellent and ancient culinary tradition; it is rich in Mediterranean flavours and ready to delight the tourist with characteristic products found on the many farmhouse hotels.
The region can be discovered in many ways: by savouring its famous gastronomic specialities like Pesto and Focaccia, by travelling through the cultural itineraries covering the churches, museums, historical palaces and medieval villages; through visits to the inland areas of Liguria which have remained unchanged through time, or even in the study of its crafts production such as glasswork, ceramics and roofing or the production of silk and valuable inlay work.

Sestri Levante is a town and comune in Liguria, Italy. Lying on the Mediterranean Sea, it is approximately 56 kilometers south of Genoa and is set on a promontory. While nearby Portofino and the Cinque Terre are probably the most well known tourist destinations on the Italian Riviera, Sestri Levante is becoming quite a favorite among Italians. This once quiet fishing village is slowly turning into a tourist hotspot, developing an old and a new town. Sestri Levante is found approximately halfway between Genoa and La Spezia. The town has two bays: Baia delle Favole, (Bay of the Fables), and Baia del Silenzio, the (Bay of Silence). The original part of Sestri Levante is actually on a peninsula, with the Baia del Silenzio (also known as "Portobello") on one side and Baia delle Favole on the other. Baia delle Favole or "Bay of Fairy Tales" was named in honor of Danish writer, Hans Christian Andersen, who lived in Sestri Levante for a short time in 1833. Sestri Levante has its origins as an ancient maritime and merchant center. Originally a small island with a promontory, it was later connected to the mainland. In Roman times, it was known as Segesta Tigullorum (or Tigulliorum) or simply Segesta. It was mentioned in the year 909 in a certificate of a man named Berengario, in which part of its territory was ceded to the basilica di San Giovanni di Pavia; after it was invaded by the Barbarians. During the Middle Ages, Sestri Levante began to expand, probably giving the fortress appearance that is due to the terrain. In 1133, the noble family of Lavagna, the Fieschi, attacked Tigullio, the gulf in which Sestri Levante is located, however, they were fought off by the powerful Republic of Genoa, and therefore, Sestri Levante became a part of the republic, for military protection. In the year 1145, the abbey of San Colombano was acquired by the Genoese, and was transformed later into a castle. In 1170, Sestri Levante was attacked by a naval flotilla from Pisa, but was able to withstand the attack. Sestri Levante is mentioned by Dante Alighieri (as "Siestri") in Canto 19 of The Divine Comedy.

Portofino,Sestri Levante,Cinque Terre,Versilia ...
Enchanted, fairytale-like sceneries await all along the Riviera Ligure di Levante. Beloved by the writers that have told their story to the world, Portofino, Cinque Terre, and the Gulf of Poets greet us one after the other, as we work our way down the coast from Genoa to magical Versilia.
Fresh air and pure nature, towns nestled amidst mountain rocks, and terraced vineyards, the Riviera di Levante offers a unique itinerary that begins from the Gulf of Genoa and arrives at Val di Magra (on the confines with the Region of Tuscany).
At the center of the Gulf are the same-named Regional Capital, also a UNESCO World Heritage Site; and the tiny Nervi, with its small, graceful port. In summertime, a number of cultural festivals are held here, among them the International Ballet Festival.
Charming towns that speak of the sea in every aspect and typical inland villages animate the Gulf of Paradise: from Bogliasco and Avegno to the jewel that is Camogli – famous for its pretty, miniscule port with multi-colored palazzi lining the water.
Yet it’s not only about sights, but tastes as well: if you decide to make a little stop in Recco (on the way to the Gulf of Tigullio), you can taste this gastronomic capital’s enticing foccaccia.
The Gulf of Paradise is perhaps the most beloved by tourists in search of its particular mix of nature, history and glitz. It is here that from the pristine Regional Natural Park, you will find the exclusive Portofino, frequented by the international jet-set. Following are Lavagna, one of the major touristic ports on the Mediterranean, and Rapallo, a city that perfectly fuses history, art, and beautiful natural scenery. Those passionate for the sea will also appreciate swimming in the picturesque coves of Santa Margherita Ligure and Sestri Levante.
At the center of the terrain around Riviera Ligure di Levante lie the lidos of Levanto, little city of ancient origins and important touristic hub. This is where the internationally-renowned Cinque Terre begins.
Taking the route towards Porto Venere and Lerici, rather, you will happen on the Gulf of Poets - or the Gulf of La Spezia - where man, earth and sea seem to have reached perfect harmony.
Sarzana rises up in the Val di Magra, between La Spezia and Massa Carrara, heart of the historic territory of Lunigiana, and the endpoint of a tour of this astounding and awe-inspiring Riviera of Liguria. But of course, when you’re ready to take on a new tract of the breathtaking Italian coast, Versilia beckons!
