Digha beach is one of the most happening seaside city resort known for weekend destination for kolkatans.
Digha lies in East Midnapore district of west Bengal and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It is around 183KM away from Kolkata, Inida. One can take a car or a bus from Kolkata or a train from Howrah.
There are two Digha, One is old Digha and the other is new Digha. The old Digha is the central location however nowadays the new Digha takes the main centre stage for the tourist as it has a wider sea beach to play. It is around 2 Km to New Digha from old Digha.
There are lots of transportation at Digha to take you around but nothing like an open air motorcycle rickshaw vans ride.
There are lots of hotels, but it is advisable to book in advance. This facility is available from the city office (Kolkata) as most of the big hotels have a counter in different part of the city. Apart from this, online booking too is possible. Most of the pictures or info on net are deceptive so one should be mentally prepare to tackle the situation when you land up at the spot. As this shouldn't be the case to spoil your trip.
To witness the sunrise one must be prepared to sacrifice the beauty sleep. The warm rays reflects on the sea is one of the most spectacular sights one can behold. If you miss the opportunity, well you still have a chance to witness the sun set.

How to reach from Kolkata to Digha
By Bus – Direct Kolkata to Digha buses are available and these are most popular as they are considered to be the most economical means of transport between Kolkata and Digha. So many government buses are providing services from Kolkata to Digha. Burdwan, Sahispur and Madhupur are the main bus stops in this route. To travel to Digha from Kolkata, it takes around 4 hours.
By Train – Kolkata to Digha trains are also available and the time take to cover the distance from Kolkata to Digha is approximately 3 hours. On most days, the Duronto Express leaves Howrah at 11:15 am and arrives at Digha in 2 hours and 30 minutes. These timingsshould be checked before you make travel plans in case they are changed for whatever reason.
By Flight – Kolkata to Digha flights are unavailable in this route. So if one had included a Kolkata to Digha flight in their itinerary, this will have to be changed and an alternative to cover the Kolkata to Digha distance will have to be planned.

This video comprises a journey from Kolkata to Digha, a popular sea- shore in the state of West Bengal. The journey was undertaken last year during the monsoon season, when I did a journey on- board 18001 Howrah (HWH)- Digha Flag Station (DGHA) KANDARI Express. Loco link of our train were 23058 and 23179 WAG- 5A Twins from Tatanagar shed, making it the only train in India to have twin E-Loco fixed link.
We accelerate immediately after clearing the points at Howrah station outers, where we get to witness the NJP Shatabdi Express, and a JMP WDM- 2. After having a small parallel action with a HWH WAP- 4, we diverge from the ER lines, and race past the Tikiapara EMU Car Shed. Rain continuously gives us company as we race towards our destination, only stopping to give the scheduled halts at Santragachi Junction, Uluberia, and Mecheda enroute.
After Narayan Pakuria Murail station, we branch off the main Howrah- Kharagpur route, and take the Panskura- Haldia branch line. At Tamluk Junction, we bid goodbye to the lines heading to Haldia, and take the single line to Digha. Interestingly, we start our journey in a quadruple line journey, then we move in triple line section, then a double line section, and finally a single line section.
On the journey, we cross three important rivers, namely Damodar, Rupnarayan and Haldi. At Deshapran Halt, we meet the Digha Howrah DURONTO Express. Two more scheduled halts enroute in the rural Bengal, namely Kanthi and Ramnagar Bengal, we finally arrive at Digha Flag Station, a few minutes before time.

Digha
Digha is a seaside resort city in the state of West Bengal, India. It lies in East Midnapore district and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It has a low gradient with a shallow sand beach with gentle waves extending up to 7 km (4.3 mi) in length. It is the most popular sea resort in the West Bengal.
Geography
It is located at 21°41′N 87°33′E / 21.68°N 87.55°E / 21.68; 87.55. It has an average elevation of 6 metres (20 ft).
It is located 183 km (114 mi) from Kolkata/Howrah via Mecheda and 234 km (145 mi) via Kharagpur, this proximity has probably helped this small hamlet to emerge as a popular weekend getaway with number of good hotels and tourist lodges. Digha is connected to Kolkata/Howrah by a highway and a rail-link via Tamluk.
History
Originally, there was a place called Beerkul, where Digha lies today. This name was referred in Warren Hastings's letters (1780) as Brighton of the East.
An English businessman John Frank Snaith started living here in 1923 and his writings provided a good exposure to this place. He convinced West Bengal Chief Minister Bidhan Chandra Roy to develop this place to be a beach resort.

Digha beach is one of the most happening seaside city resort known for weekend destination for kolkatans.
Digha lies in East Midnapore district of west Bengal and at the northern end of the Bay of Bengal. It is around 183KM away from Kolkata, Inida. One can take a car or a bus from Kolkata or a train from Howrah.
There are two Digha, One is old Digha and the other is new Digha. The old Digha is the central location however nowadays the new Digha takes the main centre stage for the tourist as it has a wider sea beach to play. It is around 2 Km to New Digha from old Digha.
There are lots of transportation at Digha to take you around but nothing like an open air motorcycle rickshaw vans ride.
There are lots of hotels, but it is advisable to book in advance. This facility is available from the city office (Kolkata) as most of the big hotels have a counter in different part of the city. Apart from this, online booking too is possible. Most of the pictures or info on net are deceptive so one should be mentally prepare to tackle the situation when you land up at the spot. As this shouldn't be the case to spoil your trip.
To witness the sunrise one must be prepared to sacrifice the beauty sleep. The warm rays reflects on the sea is one of the most spectacular sights one can behold. If you miss the opportunity, well you still have a chance to witness the sun set.

This video comprises a journey from Kolkata to Digha, a popular sea- shore in the state of West Bengal. The journey was undertaken last year during the monsoon season, when I did a journey on- board 18001 Howrah (HWH)- Digha Flag Station (DGHA) KANDARI Express. Loco link of our train were 23058 and 23179 WAG- 5A Twins from Tatanagar shed, making it the only train in India to have twin E-Loco fixed link.
We accelerate immediately after clearing the points at Howrah station outers, where we get to witness the NJP Shatabdi Express, and a JMP WDM- 2. After having a small parallel action with a HWH WAP- 4, we diverge from the ER lines, and race past the Tikiapara EMU Car Shed. Rain continuously gives us company as we race towards our destination, only stopping to give the scheduled halts at Santragachi Junction, Uluberia, and Mecheda enroute.
After Narayan Pakuria Murail station, we branch off the main Howrah- Kharagpur route, and take the Panskura- Haldia branch line. At Tamluk Junction, we bid goodbye to the lines heading to Haldia, and take the single line to Digha. Interestingly, we start our journey in a quadruple line journey, then we move in triple line section, then a double line section, and finally a single line section.
On the journey, we cross three important rivers, namely Damodar, Rupnarayan and Haldi. At Deshapran Halt, we meet the Digha Howrah DURONTO Express. Two more scheduled halts enroute in the rural Bengal, namely Kanthi and Ramnagar Bengal, we finally arrive at Digha Flag Station, a few minutes before time.

Digha Sea Beach is 6 km. long and very wide. Digha sea beach are almost plain beach. This beach town of Dhigha has got it's fame for the flat and hard beach. The beauty of this place was discovered as early as the days of Hastings, to protect the beach from the encroachment of the sea towards the township part of the wide beach is now completely covered by big boulders. At the high tide the beach gets totally engulfed by high waves, One day. Most of the people comes at the weekends or on a holiday of 2/3 days,
it is only 235 km. via Kharagpur and 175 km.via Mecheda. It takes about 5 hrs. to reach Digha from Kolkata by bus. Digha is now connected by direct rail from Shalimar, Kolkata, which has saved at least 1 hr. Digha called as A Seaside Paradise.

Two people died and as many as 17 people were shot at a Fort Myers, Fla. nightclub hosting a teen party in the early morning hours Monday, The Miami Herald reported via The New York Times. Gunfire erupted at The Swimsuit Glow Party at Club Blu around 12.30 a.m. where police found several victims suffering from gunshot wounds in the parking lot.
