As of the morning of December 31, Cyclone Thane had left at least 46 dead in Tamil Nadu and Pondicherry. About 7 deaths were reported in Pondicherry and 39 people have been reported dead in Cuddalore. Cuddalore and Pondicherry were the worst affected by Thane.

A cyclone watch has been issued for the northern Gulf of Carpentaria coast of the NT as a tropical low (ex TC Grant) is expected to deepen over Gulf waters from Wednesday and move towards the far north of the Cape in Queensland. Very heavy rain will continue in the eastern districts of the NT and move onto far northern Queensland by Thursday.
As expected, southeast Bay of Bengal has thrown up a tropical cyclone, named Thane, early this morning.
An India Meteorological Department (IMD) update said that the causative deep depression intensified overnight and moved north-northwards and lay centred over southeast Bay of Bengal.
The bearing of the system was traced to 750 km east-southeast of Chennai, 700 km northeast of Trincomalee in Sri Lanka and 600 km west-southwest of Port Blair in Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
An IMD outlook for the next 24 hours said that the system would likely move west-northwestwards and intensify further into a severe cyclonic storm.

TV9 News : Cyclone Thane Hits Tamilnadu, Karantaka.....!
'Thane,' the very severe cyclonic storm that crossed Tamil Nadu and Puducherry on Friday morning, claimed 33 lives, and left behind a trail of destruction and human suffering.
Throwing life off course, the storm, which passed the coast north of Cuddalore at 6.30 a.m. at a speed of more than 125 km an hour, uprooted trees and electric posts, disrupted power supply and transport services and damaged homes and standing crops.
Twenty-six people were killed in Tamil Nadu and seven in Puducherry. Besides, hundreds were rendered homeless and forced into relief camps set up by the governments.
Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa released Rs. 150 crore towards immediate relief works.
While 21 persons died in Cuddalore district, two persons lost their lives in the neighbouring Villupuram district. One person each in Tiruvallur and Chennai were among the dead as strong wind and heavy rain lashed the coastal areas.
Ms. Jayalalithaa announced a solatium of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of the victims. Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said he had briefed Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on the situation.
Around 6,000 persons in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and Chennai and low-level areas were shifted to shelters.
Fifteen fishermen who put out to sea in Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts were reported missing. The samba crop grown on 1,700 hectares in Thanjavur district and 2,000 hectares in Tiruvarur district suffered damage.
Ms. Jayalalithaa, who reviewed the situation with the Chief Secretary and other officials, sent five Ministers to five districts to oversee the relief works.
Secretaries of various departments and Collectors of the districts that bore the brunt of 'Thane' have been asked to send a report to the government after assessing the damage.
Four teams of the National Disaster Response Force based in Arakkonam were sent to Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Chennai and Tiruvallur. As a precautionary measure, electricity supply had been cut in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Nagapattinam districts since Thursday evening.
The Chief Minister said she had asked officials to clear the uprooted trees to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and resume power supply by Friday evening.
Unprecedented damage
In Puducherry, the Chief Minister convened a meeting of his Cabinet colleagues and senior officials to assess the situation.
"Probably by this evening or by Saturday morning, we will be sending an interim report," he told The Hindu. Though the damage could not be assessed now, he said, "it is unprecedented and heavy."
"Initial reports suggest that the wind speed was around 130 to 140 km after 3 a.m. We haven't heard of such a calamity in the history of Puducherry," he said.
Trains cancelled
Southern Railway cancelled six trains and partially cancelled three services. The arrival and departure of four international flights and more than 25 domestic flights were rescheduled.

Thane (IPA: [ˈʈaɳe]) (Marathi : ठाणे) is a city in Maharashtra, India, part of the Mumbai Metropolitan Region, which is the northeastern suburb of Mumbai at the head of the Thane Creek. It is the administrative headquarters of Thane district. On 16 April 1853, the G.I.P. Railway’s first train ever to run in India rolled out from "Boree Bunder" (now the Chhatrapati Shivaji Terminus) to "Thane" (then Tannah), 34 kilometers away. This marked the dawn of the Railway Age in Asia. It covers an area of 147 km2 and has a population more than 2.4 million according to the 2011 census.
Thane is located on Salsette Island to the northeast of Mumbai. Spanning an area of about 147 km², the city is located at an elevation of 7 meters above sea level. It is surrounded by hills, including the hill of Yeoor and Parsik Hill. It is divided by the Thane Creek, a stream that courses from the Ulhas River to the Arabian Sea that forms an estuary. Two road bridges and one rail bridge connect the two parts of the city. It is one of the oldest cities of India, with its history dating back to about 2,000 years.[citation needed] Thane Municipal Corporation City's limits includes Kopri to the south, Wagle estate Naupada, Pachpakhadi to the west, Kalwa, Mumbra and Diva to the east and Manpada, Bramand, Kaserwadavli to the north. It is divided into politically two parts by the Thane Creek.

Tamil Nadu Chief Minister Jayalalithaa released Rs. 150 crore towards immediate relief works.
While 21 persons died in Cuddalore district, two persons lost their lives in the neighbouring Villupuram district. One person each in Tiruvallur and Chennai were among the dead as strong wind and heavy rain lashed the coastal areas.
Ms. Jayalalithaa announced a solatium of Rs. 2 lakh each to the families of the victims. Puducherry Chief Minister N. Rangasamy said he had briefed Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram on the situation.
Around 6,000 persons in Cuddalore, Villupuram, Nagapattinam, Tiruvallur and Kancheepuram districts and Chennai and low-level areas were shifted to shelters.
Fifteen fishermen who put out to sea in Thanjavur and Pudukottai districts were reported missing. The samba crop grown on 1,700 hectares in Thanjavur district and 2,000 hectares in Tiruvarur district suffered damage.
Ms. Jayalalithaa, who reviewed the situation with the Chief Secretary and other officials, sent five Ministers to five districts to oversee the relief works.
Secretaries of various departments and Collectors of the districts that bore the brunt of 'Thane' have been asked to send a report to the government after assessing the damage.
Four teams of the National Disaster Response Force based in Arakkonam were sent to Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, Chennai and Tiruvallur. As a precautionary measure, electricity supply had been cut in Cuddalore, Villupuram and Nagapattinam districts since Thursday evening.
The Chief Minister said she had asked officials to clear the uprooted trees to ensure a smooth flow of traffic and resume power supply by Friday evening.
Unprecedented damage
In Puducherry, the Chief Minister convened a meeting of his Cabinet colleagues and senior officials to assess the situation.
"Probably by this evening or by Saturday morning, we will be sending an interim report," he told The Hindu. Though the damage could not be assessed now, he said, "it is unprecedented and heavy."
"Initial reports suggest that the wind speed was around 130 to 140 km after 3 a.m. We haven't heard of such a calamity in the history of Puducherry," he said.
Trains cancelled
Southern Railway cancelled six trains and partially cancelled three services. The arrival and departure of four international flights and more than 25 domestic flights were rescheduled.

The Ponnaiyar is a river in southern India. It rises on the hill of Nandidurg in Chikkaballapur District of Karnataka state, and flows south and then east for 400 km (250 mi) through Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, emptying into the Bay of Bengal at Cuddalore. Tirukkovilur is the largest city in the path of Ponnaiyar River. The South Pennar River is known as Dakshina Pinakini in Kannada and Thenpennai in Tamil. It is also referred as Ponnaiyar .This river is now looted for its rich availability of sand. As the water flow will be only in monsoon seasons, river is dry in remaining parts of the year.This was taken on 31 st dec 2011 it was very rare to see even few patches of water but due to the rains from cyclonic storm it was full :) -
