Salem County is a county located in the U.S. state of New Jersey. Its western boundary is formed by the Delaware River and it has the eastern terminus of the Delaware Memorial Bridge, connecting to New Castle, Delaware. Its county seat is Salem. The county is part of the Delaware Valley area. As of the 2010 Census, the county's population was 66,083, increasing by 1,798 (+2.8%) from the 64,285 counted in the 2000 Census, retaining its position as the state's least populous county. The most populous place was Pennsville Township, with 13,409 residents at the time of the 2010 Census. Lower Alloways Creek Township covers 72.46 square miles (187.7 km2), the largest total area of any municipality.
European settlement began with English colonists in the seventeenth century, who were settling both sides of the Delaware River. They established a colonial court in the area in 1681, but Salem County was first formally organized within West Jersey on May 17, 1694, from the Salem Tenth. Pittsgrove Township was transferred to Cumberland County in April 1867, but was restored to Salem County in February 1868. The area was initially settled by Quakers.
A county, abbreviated Cnty. (US) or Co. (UK and Ireland), is a geographical region of a country used for administrative or other purposes, in certain modern nations. The term is derived from the Old French conté or cunté denoting a jurisdiction under the sovereignty of a count (earl) or a viscount. The modern French is comté, and its equivalents in other languages are contea, contado, comtat, condado, Grafschaft, graafschap, Gau, etc. (cf. conte, comte, conde, Graf).
When the Normans conquered England, they brought the term with them. The Saxons had already established the districts that became the historic counties of England, calling them shires (many county names derive from the name of the county town with the word "shire" added on: for example, Gloucestershire and Worcestershire). The Vikings introduced the term earl (from Old Norse, jarl) to the British Isles. Thus, "earl" and "earldom" were taken as equivalent to the continental use of "count" and "county". So the later-imported term became a synonym for the native English word scir ([ʃiːr]) or, in Modern English, shire. Since a shire was an administrative division of the kingdom, the term "county" evolved to designate an administrative division of national government in most modern uses.

Quinton-Alloway Road in Salem County, NJ is long and straight. You can go fast, but watch out for that curve. Joe Farner has lived across from the curve for three decades. In that time, he says the curve has claimed scores of vehicles, lives as well, the latest being that of New Jersey State Trooper Eli McCarson. "I heard like -- wet tires on the road screeching... wasn't really screeching... sliding, and then the impact. And there he was," Farner said. Trooper McCarson was killed last week as he drove west on Quinton-Alloway Road approaching Route 49. Police say he was rushing to a domestic dispute call when he went off the road at the curve and hit a utility pole. He's not the first person to lose his life there. Constance Wheeler has also lived near the curve for ten years...

TURNING THE TIDE takes the viewer into two "urban wetlands" in the most densely-populated state in the nation, New Jersey. The Hackensack Meadowlands and the Hamilton-Trenton Marsh were once used as landfills, but today they are being slowly nursed back to health through conservation measures. TIDE was awarded a CINE Gold Eagle and a World Medal at the New York Festivals. This is an online video piece I edited after the 30-minute program was completed. It follows a typical tour into the Hamilton-Trenton Marsh from a landing in Bordentown, New Jersey, where kayaks and canoes go in with the tide and then return with the tide's change. Prof. Mary Leck is a great guide and tours happen often.
Standing in front of a voting machine, Midge Guerrera, the series host, explains that there are three levels of government: a national government in Washington, a state government in Trenton, and local governments in our counties and towns. All begin with voting. She says that this program is about a visit to the State House in Trenton, which is the home of state government. In the rotunda of the State House, Midge explains that the word democracy comes from the Greek word demos, meaning "people." Democracy means government by the people. But that doesn't mean all the people. At one time in New Jersey history if you didn't own property, or if you were a woman, or if you were an African American, or if you weren't twenty-one years of age, you couldn't vote. Furthermore, not everyone votes ...
