ONE BIG HAPPY: "PILOT" REVIEW From executive producer Ellen Degeneres, NBC's latest comedy One Big Happy sounds pretty good on paper. The series follows two lifelong pals, Lizzy (Elisha Cuthbert) and Luke (Nick Zano), who decide to have a baby together as friends, but things get complicated when Luke falls in love with and gets married to a buxom Briton named Prudence (Kelly Brook). Unfortunately, despite a solid cast and fun premise, this new series falls woefully short of its potential. Even in the cold open, One Big Happy reveals just how obvious and vapid it is. The show starts off with Luke and Lizzy giving a wide-eyed pharmacist the full rundown of their situation: he's straight, she's a lesbian, and they've been trying to have a kid for awhile now. Once the two of them come home with a pregnancy test, they continue to blather on about stuff they already know about each other, like "You knew I was gay before I did!" and "You wore a top hat to prom!" Annoyingly, most of Lizzy and Luke's dialogue is made up of "as you know" conversations. Meanwhile, Luke's meet-cute with the bubbly Prudence isn't much better. After hitting it off at a bar, the two go on one date together and get hitched in Vegas the next day. The problem is, there isn't much chemistry between Zano and Brook, so it's hard to buy them as doting newly weds. Following that, Prudence moves in with Luke and Lizzy -- much to Lizzy's dismay -- just as Lizzy's pregnancy finally takes. Now, you'd think this is where the "wackiness ensues" part comes into play, but alas the jokes are so bad and the plotting so formulaic that you all but forget the unique setup. It doesn't help that One Big Happy crams in a laugh track to make us think the jokes are funnier than they are. It's almost unsettling how even the most paltry lines are met with hysterical cackles. As a result, the the whole first episode feels like a waste of time. That's not to mention the premiere's tedious B story, which revolves around Lizzy and Prudence picking out a color for the living room accent wall. (And, yes, there is an accent wall/British accent joke.) Honestly, the one thing the show has going for it is its cast. Granted, Zano wavers a bit in his comedic timing, but Cuthbert and Brook are actually pretty good together, and all three actors fully commit to their jokes (stale as they are). The show also features a fine ensemble, including Chris Williams, Rebecca Cory and Brandon Mychal Smith. But again, the on-screen talent is wasted on gimmicky, subpar material.
