Developing Visions, implementing State-of-the-Art technologies (®Oculentis 2009) Oculentis is one of the few remaining independent IOL manufacturers having its own Research & Development Department and one of the most modern manufacturing plants for intraocular lenses (Oculentis BV, Eerbeek, Netherlands). LENTIS intraocular lenses are the core of the Oculentis product range for the ophthalmic surgeon. Our product range includes foldable posterior chamber lenses made from HydroSmart acrylate. The acrylic lenses made from HydroSmart material provide the surgeon with high comfort and best functionality: These lenses possess the folding qualities of a hydrophilic lens; however, thanks to their hydrophobic surface and the truly sharp edges they also reduce the risk of secondary cataract. A success story - Sub-Micron Lathing Technology (SML) All LENTIS acrylic lenses are manufactured using the sub-micron lathing technique (in short: SML). Thanks to this state-of-the-art production method, the lenses do not require additional polishing after production and thus keep their true square edges, even at the optic-haptic junctions. There is no risk of polishing residues being left on the optic. The square-edge design as well as the excellent surface quality lead to a lower rate of secondary cataract formation and thus reduce the need for additional treatment. Here are the core features:  SML has transformed lens manufacturing from handcraft to computer-controlled production.  SML the lens blank is processed in a single production step without the need for additional polishing.  SML ensures the creation of truly square edges for the entire 360 degrees; even for the region of the haptics. A recent study conducted by the Berlin Eye Research Institute (BERI) confirms the exceptionally sharp optic edges of the LENTIS IOL for a better PCO prophylaxis.  SML is an essential pre-condition for the high reproducibility of complicated IOL optics, but it also allows for the manufacture of individual intraocular lenses on short notice. In minutes, almost completely automated with the help of industrial robots, complex IOL designs and optics are manufactured with high precision out of acrylic blanks -- without polishing and within the nanometer range.
