New York-born physicist Murray Gell-Mann (1929-2019) was a theoretical physicist. His considerable contributions to physics include the theory of quantum chromodynamics. He was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. [Listener: Geoffrey West; date recorded: 1997]
TRANSCRIPT: It's a pity that Shelley has gone on to be such an enemy of superstring theory. I can't understand why he does that… why he has taken that position. He's also helped to spread the entirely wrong idea that superstring theory can never be tested. And of course what one could say is that the real unification that occurs in superstring theory does not occur until you reach very, very, very high energies around the Planck mass or… and that that energy could not be achieved in laboratories or even in cosmic ray experiments in the centre of mass system, and therefore a direct test of the unified regime will not be possible. But that doesn't mean you can't test the theory. And what's curious is that Shelley participated in this move to discuss unified Yang-Mills theory with a higher group, SU(5) or something bigger that would unify the SU(2) x U(1) of the electro weak interaction and SU(3) of the strong interaction… SU(3) of color of the strong interaction, put them all together. And that theory, if it happens to have a significant degree of truth in it would also take effect only at very, very high energies, maybe 10 to the 15th, or 10 to the 14th, or 10 to the 16th GeV--also beyond the range of possible experiments. So this is a clear case of the person who lives in a wooden house not throwing termites. Why should he do that? I… I just cannot understand his position on this issue.

Glashow shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg. He is a member of the Board of Sponsors for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.
It was an honor to have Sheldon Glashow on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE podcast. He joins our Nobel Minds playlist, having won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, for his "contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral current.”
Shelly recounts a remarkable life as the son of a plumber who went to the acclaimed Bronx Science high school and then worked his way through some of the most notable laboratories in the world, meeting colleagues and forming collaborations along the way. Having won science’s top prize over 40 years ago didn’t slow him down, as he only recently retired from research and teaching.
Shelly’s 1988 book, “Interactions: A Journey Through the Mind of a Particle Physicist and the Matter of this World,” holds up decades later as one that asks important questions about physics and guides future generations of scientists. I recommend that everyone curious about the field read it. His writing style is enviously humorous and accessible.
I was interested to hear about how his love of science fiction encouraged his career as a physicist. Considering many of the topics we cover would have been considered science fiction even in the time that Shelly has been alive, he is properly impressed and optimistic about the benefits technology can have on scientific discovery.
It was also encouraging to see how interested and engaged he still is in the pursuit of knowledge. Though he does express some pessimism about the future of humanity. Perhaps it’s hard not to during the pandemic, combined with the grim news about climate change and other threats. Hopefully, the fields he and I know and love - “useless fields” as he calls them - can continue that Nobel legacy of bettering humankind.

James Clerk Maxwell nacque il 13 giugno 1831 a Edimburgo da una famiglia della piccola nobiltà terriera. La madre si occupò interamente della sua formazione incoraggiandolo "a guardare attraverso la natura al Dio della Natura". A sedici anni entrò nell'Università di Edimburgo. Dopo la laurea, si iscrisse alla prestigiosa università di Cambridge per conseguirvi il dottorato. Ottenuto nel 1854 il dottorato, nel 1855 divenne fellow al Trinity College. Dal 1856 insegnò Filosofia Naturale al Marischal College di Aberdeen. In quest'opera Maxwell formula le sue famose equazioni differenziali che sono un sistema potentissimo nello studio dei fenomeni elettromagnetici. Fra gli altri contributi di Maxwell, confrontabili per la loro importanza alla teoria elettromagnetica, spicca la sua originale formulazione di una teoria cinetica dei gas, principalmente in due saggi del 1860 e del 1867. Egli introdusse metodi statistici nel calcolo della distribuzione delle velocità delle molecole i cui urti interni e sulle pareti del recipiente erano stati considerati da R. Clausius la causa della pressione e degli altri fenomeni dei gas. La teoria di Maxwell aveva previsto che l'attrito interno del gas avrebbe dovuto essere indipendente dalla pressione e, per quanto ciò potesse sembrare contrario al senso comune, il risultato fu verificato in esperimenti da lui stesso eseguiti. Questi suoi contributi alla teoria cinetica aprirono il campo agli sviluppi della meccanica statistica, una componente fondamentale della fisica moderna. Negli ultimi anni della sua attività Maxwell svolse prevalentemente attività divulgativa; curò in particolare la laboriosa pubblicazione delle Electrical Researches di H. Sheldon Lee Glashow (/ˈɡlæʃoʊ/; born December 5, 1932) is a Nobel Prize winning American theoretical physicist. He is the Metcalf Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Boston University and Higgins Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at Harvard University, and is a member of the Board of Sponsors for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
Birth and education
Sheldon Lee Glashow was born in New York City, to Jewish immigrants from Russia, Bella (Rubin) and Lewis Gluchovsky, a plumber. He graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1950. Glashow was in the same graduating class as Steven Weinberg, whose own research, independent of Glashow's, would result in the two and Abdus Salam sharing the same 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics (see below). Glashow received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1954 and a Ph.D. degree in physics from Harvard University in 1959 under Nobel-laureate physicist Julian Schwinger. Afterwards, Glashow became a NSF fellow at NORDITA and joined the University of California, Berkeley where he was an associate professor from 1962 to 1966. He joined the Harvard physics department as a professor in 1966, and was named Higgins Professor of Physics in 1979; he became emeritus in 2000. Glashow has been a visiting scientist at CERN, and professor at the University of Marseilles, MIT, Brookhaven Laboratory, Texas A&M, the University of Houston, and Boston University.

New York-born physicist Murray Gell-Mann (1929-2019) was a theoretical physicist. His considerable contributions to physics include the theory of quantum chromodynamics. He was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. [Listener: Geoffrey West; date recorded: 1997]
TRANSCRIPT: It's a pity that Shelley has gone on to be such an enemy of superstring theory. I can't understand why he does that… why he has taken that position. He's also helped to spread the entirely wrong idea that superstring theory can never be tested. And of course what one could say is that the real unification that occurs in superstring theory does not occur until you reach very, very, very high energies around the Planck mass or… and that that energy could not be achieved in laboratories or even in cosmic ray experiments in the centre of mass system, and therefore a direct test of the unified regime will not be possible. But that doesn't mean you can't test the theory. And what's curious is that Shelley participated in this move to discuss unified Yang-Mills theory with a higher group, SU(5) or something bigger that would unify the SU(2) x U(1) of the electro weak interaction and SU(3) of the strong interaction… SU(3) of color of the strong interaction, put them all together. And that theory, if it happens to have a significant degree of truth in it would also take effect only at very, very high energies, maybe 10 to the 15th, or 10 to the 14th, or 10 to the 16th GeV--also beyond the range of possible experiments. So this is a clear case of the person who lives in a wooden house not throwing termites. Why should he do that? I… I just cannot understand his position on this issue.

Glashow shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg. He is a member of the Board of Sponsors for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.
It was an honor to have Sheldon Glashow on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE podcast. He joins our Nobel Minds playlist, having won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, for his "contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral current.”
Shelly recounts a remarkable life as the son of a plumber who went to the acclaimed Bronx Science high school and then worked his way through some of the most notable laboratories in the world, meeting colleagues and forming collaborations along the way. Having won science’s top prize over 40 years ago didn’t slow him down, as he only recently retired from research and teaching.
Shelly’s 1988 book, “Interactions: A Journey Through the Mind of a Particle Physicist and the Matter of this World,” holds up decades later as one that asks important questions about physics and guides future generations of scientists. I recommend that everyone curious about the field read it. His writing style is enviously humorous and accessible.
I was interested to hear about how his love of science fiction encouraged his career as a physicist. Considering many of the topics we cover would have been considered science fiction even in the time that Shelly has been alive, he is properly impressed and optimistic about the benefits technology can have on scientific discovery.
It was also encouraging to see how interested and engaged he still is in the pursuit of knowledge. Though he does express some pessimism about the future of humanity. Perhaps it’s hard not to during the pandemic, combined with the grim news about climate change and other threats. Hopefully, the fields he and I know and love - “useless fields” as he calls them - can continue that Nobel legacy of bettering humankind.

James Clerk Maxwell nacque il 13 giugno 1831 a Edimburgo da una famiglia della piccola nobiltà terriera. La madre si occupò interamente della sua formazione incoraggiandolo "a guardare attraverso la natura al Dio della Natura". A sedici anni entrò nell'Università di Edimburgo. Dopo la laurea, si iscrisse alla prestigiosa università di Cambridge per conseguirvi il dottorato. Ottenuto nel 1854 il dottorato, nel 1855 divenne fellow al Trinity College. Dal 1856 insegnò Filosofia Naturale al Marischal College di Aberdeen. Una ricerca sulla stabilità degli anelli di Saturno (1859), che gli valse l'assegnazione del premio Adams, lo portò alla ribalta come uno dei maggiori fisici matematici del suo tempo. Maxwell si dedicò con grande impegno sia all'insegnamento che alla realizzazione di nuovi metodi di misure elettromagnetiche nell'intento di specializzare il laboratorio in misure di alta precisione. Al periodo di Cambridge, che trascorse in contatto con illustri scienziati, fra i quali M. Faraday, appartengono le sue pubblicazioni principali: sulla teoria dei colori, sulla teoria cinetica dei gas, sulla termodinamica e sulla teoria dinamica del campo elettromagnetico. Intorno al 1865, Maxwell elaborò una delle sue opere più importanti, A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (pubblicato nel 1873), che era al contempo una "summa" di tutte le teorie elettriche e magnetiche del tempo nonché l'esposizione, in forma più matura, della sua nuova teoria del campo elettromagnetico, su cui aveva già cominciato a lavorare dal 1855. In quest'opera Maxwell formula le sue famose equazioni differenziali che sono un sistema potentissimo nello studio dei fenomeni elettromagnetici. Fra gli altri contributi di Maxwell, confrontabili per la loro importanza alla teoria elettromagnetica, spicca la sua originale formulazione di una teoria cinetica dei gas, principalmente in due saggi del 1860 e del 1867. Egli introdusse metodi statistici nel calcolo della distribuzione delle velocità delle molecole i cui urti interni e sulle pareti del recipiente erano stati considerati da R. Clausius la causa della pressione e degli altri fenomeni dei gas. La teoria di Maxwell aveva previsto che l'attrito interno del gas avrebbe dovuto essere indipendente dalla pressione e, per quanto ciò potesse sembrare contrario al senso comune, il risultato fu verificato in esperimenti da lui stesso eseguiti. Questi suoi contributi alla teoria cinetica aprirono il campo agli sviluppi della meccanica statistica, una componente fondamentale della fisica moderna. Negli ultimi anni della sua attività Maxwell svolse prevalentemente attività divulgativa; curò in particolare la laboriosa pubblicazione delle Electrical Researches di H. Cavendish, del quale volle pazientemente ripetere tutti gli esperimenti per poter meglio ricostruire il pensiero dell'autore. Intorno al 1865, Maxwell elaborò una delle sue opere più importanti, A Treatise on Electricity and Magnetism (pubblicato nel 1873), che era al contempo una "summa" di tutte le teorie elettriche e magnetiche del tempo nonché l'esposizione, in forma più matura, della sua nuova teoria del campo elettromagnetico, su cui aveva già cominciato a lavorare dal 1855. In quest'opera Maxwell formula le sue famose equazioni differenziali che sono un sistema potentissimo nello studio dei fenomeni elettromagnetici. Fra gli altri contributi di Maxwell, confrontabili per la loro importanza alla teoria elettromagnetica, spicca la sua originale formulazione di una teoria cinetica dei gas, principalmente in due saggi del 1860 e del 1867. Egli introdusse metodi statistici nel calcolo della distribuzione delle velocità delle molecole i cui urti interni e sulle pareti del recipiente erano stati considerati da R. Clausius la causa della pressione e degli altri fenomeni dei gas. La teoria di Maxwell aveva previsto che l'attrito interno del gas avrebbe dovuto essere indipendente dalla pressione e, per quanto ciò potesse sembrare contrario al senso comune, il risultato fu verificato in esperimenti da lui stesso eseguiti. Questi suoi contributi alla teoria cinetica aprirono il campo agli sviluppi della meccanica statistica, una componente fondamentale della fisica moderna. Negli ultimi anni della sua attività Maxwell svolse prevalentemente attività divulgativa; curò in particolare la laboriosa pubblicazione delle Electrical Researches di H. Cavendish, del quale volle pazientemente ripetere tutti gli esperimenti per poter meglio ricostruire il pensiero dell'autore. Morì a soli 48 anni lasciando alla scienza moderna un'eredità di inestimabile valore.

New York-born physicist Murray Gell-Mann (1929-2019) was a theoretical physicist. His considerable contributions to physics include the theory of quantum chromodynamics. He was awarded the 1969 Nobel Prize in Physics for his work on the theory of elementary particles. [Listener: Geoffrey West; date recorded: 1997]
TRANSCRIPT: It's a pity that Shelley has gone on to be such an enemy of superstring theory. I can't understand why he does that… why he has taken that position. He's also helped to spread the entirely wrong idea that superstring theory can never be tested. And of course what one could say is that the real unification that occurs in superstring theory does not occur until you reach very, very, very high energies around the Planck mass or… and that that energy could not be achieved in laboratories or even in cosmic ray experiments in the centre of mass system, and therefore a direct test of the unified regime will not be possible. But that doesn't mean you can't test the theory. And what's curious is that Shelley participated in this move to discuss unified Yang-Mills theory with a higher group, SU(5) or something bigger that would unify the SU(2) x U(1) of the electro weak interaction and SU(3) of the strong interaction… SU(3) of color of the strong interaction, put them all together. And that theory, if it happens to have a significant degree of truth in it would also take effect only at very, very high energies, maybe 10 to the 15th, or 10 to the 14th, or 10 to the 16th GeV--also beyond the range of possible experiments. So this is a clear case of the person who lives in a wooden house not throwing termites. Why should he do that? I… I just cannot understand his position on this issue.

Glashow shared the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics with Abdus Salam and Steven Weinberg. He is a member of the Board of Sponsors for the Bulletin of Atomic Scientists.
It was an honor to have Sheldon Glashow on the INTO THE IMPOSSIBLE podcast. He joins our Nobel Minds playlist, having won the 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics, for his "contributions to the theory of the unified weak and electromagnetic interaction between elementary particles, including, inter alia, the prediction of the weak neutral current.”
Shelly recounts a remarkable life as the son of a plumber who went to the acclaimed Bronx Science high school and then worked his way through some of the most notable laboratories in the world, meeting colleagues and forming collaborations along the way. Having won science’s top prize over 40 years ago didn’t slow him down, as he only recently retired from research and teaching.
Shelly’s 1988 book, “Interactions: A Journey Through the Mind of a Particle Physicist and the Matter of this World,” holds up decades later as one that asks important questions about physics and guides future generations of scientists. I recommend that everyone curious about the field read it. His writing style is enviously humorous and accessible.
I was interested to hear about how his love of science fiction encouraged his career as a physicist. Considering many of the topics we cover would have been considered science fiction even in the time that Shelly has been alive, he is properly impressed and optimistic about the benefits technology can have on scientific discovery.
It was also encouraging to see how interested and engaged he still is in the pursuit of knowledge. Though he does express some pessimism about the future of humanity. Perhaps it’s hard not to during the pandemic, combined with the grim news about climate change and other threats. Hopefully, the fields he and I know and love - “useless fields” as he calls them - can continue that Nobel legacy of bettering humankind.

James Clerk Maxwell nacque il 13 giugno 1831 a Edimburgo da una famiglia della piccola nobiltà terriera. La madre si occupò interamente della sua formazione incoraggiandolo "a guardare attraverso la natura al Dio della Natura". A sedici anni entrò nell'Università di Edimburgo. Dopo la laurea, si iscrisse alla prestigiosa università di Cambridge per conseguirvi il dottorato. Ottenuto nel 1854 il dottorato, nel 1855 divenne fellow al Trinity College. Dal 1856 insegnò Filosofia Naturale al Marischal College di Aberdeen. Sheldon Lee Glashow
Sheldon Lee Glashow (/ˈɡlæʃoʊ/; born December 5, 1932) is a Nobel Prize winning American theoretical physicist. He is the Metcalf Professor of Mathematics and Physics at Boston University and Higgins Professor of Physics, Emeritus, at Harvard University, and is a member of the Board of Sponsors for the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists.
Birth and education
Sheldon Lee Glashow was born in New York City, to Jewish immigrants from Russia, Bella (Rubin) and Lewis Gluchovsky, a plumber. He graduated from Bronx High School of Science in 1950. Glashow was in the same graduating class as Steven Weinberg, whose own research, independent of Glashow's, would result in the two and Abdus Salam sharing the same 1979 Nobel Prize in Physics (see below). Glashow received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Cornell University in 1954 and a Ph.D. degree in physics from Harvard University in 1959 under Nobel-laureate physicist Julian Schwinger. Afterwards, Glashow became a NSF fellow at NORDITA and joined the University of California, Berkeley where he was an associate professor from 1962 to 1966. He joined the Harvard physics department as a professor in 1966, and was named Higgins Professor of Physics in 1979; he became emeritus in 2000. Glashow has been a visiting scientist at CERN, and professor at the University of Marseilles, MIT, Brookhaven Laboratory, Texas A&M, the University of Houston, and Boston University.
