1080 (
Sodium Mono Fluoroacetate) is used to kill so-called pest species such as wild dogs, pigs and foxes, however thousands of non-target species also become victims. 1080 was discovered by the
Iraq study group during their search for
Saddam Hussein’s chemical weapons in Iraq in
2003. It is regarded as a potential weapon of mass destruction and has been banned in nearly every country in the world, because it is a deadly toxin which has no antidote.
Animals can die by primary poisoning (eating a bait) or secondary poisoning (eating an animal that has been killed by 1080).
Dogs and dingoes are particularly susceptible to
1080 poison and the
RSPCA deem it very inhumane, as it causes animals to die a prolonged, agonising death. The flesh of poisoned animals can remain toxic to other animals or carnivorous birds for months depending on the weather and soil conditions.
Young children are at extreme risk of becoming adversely affected if they touch poisoned baits.
The World Heath Organisation classified human adverse effects of 1080 as vomiting, paresthesias, tremor, seizures, hallucination, coma, cardiac arythmia, and cardiac failure.
1080 POISON is placed in highly desirable food and either buried slightly or dispensed aerially over vast areas of
Victoria (and other states).
1080 is used in both country and urban areas, and can be found in sand dunes as well as areas close to popular holiday and camping spots right across
Australia - there could be 1080 right near your home!
Authorities claim that the fluoroacetate found naturally in some plants is the same chemical as sodium fluoroacetate (1080).
The Animal Justice Party believe this is misleading, and is akin to claiming that chlorine is the same as table salt (sodium chloride). There are other more humane and less costly options of controlling problem species. Recent (Aug 2014) research by
Murdoch University found that 99% of monitored fox baits were taken by creatures other than foxes. This could be your family pet or a native species. No animal deserves to die like this. 1080 poison must be banned in Australia!
