Madri

In the Mahabharata epic, Madri (Sanskrit: माद्री Mādrī) was a princess of the Madra kingdom and the second wife of King Pandu.

Etymology

The word Mādrī means 'she who is the princess of Madra Kingdom'.

Marriage To Pandu

Having just ascended the throne, Pandu went to war, conquering or allying with many kingdoms in the name of Hastinapur. When he approached Madra, he found a huge army waiting him. During the war, he found King Shalya's charioteer driving the chariot fast. Shalya revealed that the charioteer was none other than his own sister, Madri. He proposed that the two kingdoms avoided war via marriage. Thus, Pandu married Madri.

Retreat To The Forest

She, alongside Kunti, faithfully accompanied Pandu in his hermitical retreat following his abdication as the king of Hastinapura. One day, while hunting in the forest, Pandu accidentally shot an arrow killing what he thought was a deer, but was actually the coupling Rishi Kindama. The sage cursed Pandu that he would die when he became intimate with a woman. Both Kunti and Madri were directly affected by the curse on Pandu because they were now unable to bear Pandu's children. However, a boon given to Kunti by Durvasa, enabled her to call upon any God to bear her a child. Accordingly, Kunti called upon Dharma, Vayu and Indra and bore Yudishtira, Bhima and Arjuna respectively. This greatly relieved Pandu.

Fernando & Sorocaba are a sertanejo (country music) duo from Brazil. Fernando is Fernando Zorzanello Bonifácio (born April 21, 1984 in Ji-Paraná-RO) and Sorocaba is the stage name of Fernando Fakri de Assis (born September 15, 1980 in São Paulo-SP). Fernando began singing when he was living in Cuiabá-MT, where he moved at the age of 15, and Sorocaba began when he was on the faculty of agronomy, in Londrina. He earned that nickname because he has been raised in the city of Sorocaba, São Paulo.

Chris Weaver

Chris Weaver (born 1956) is a New Zealand Potter. He has exhibited widely in New Zealand and internationally, winning many awards. His work is held in public museum collections in New Zealand, Australia and Japan.

Early life

Weaver was born in Te Awamutu, New Zealand in 1956. In 1975, he graduated from Otago Polytechnic with a Diploma in Fine and Applied Arts, completing a Ceramics Certificate the following year.

Career

Weaver largely produces clay tableware with minimal surface decoration. As Peter Gibbs wrote, “because he likes the enjoyment he gets from using hand-made objects, he especially likes making functional work.”

Weaver’s key influences include the work of his teacher Michael Trumic, potter Hans Coper, English sculptor Henry Moore, Scandinavian design and Japanese craft traditions.

His series of ‘flatiron’ teapots, based upon a common colonial household item, the flatiron, have become an iconic part of New Zealand ceramic and design history. Douglas Lloyd Jenkins called this series “a seminal work of twentieth-century New Zealand design…” He wrote, “at a time when New Zealanders, both Pakeha and Maori, were re-examining their joint colonial past and not always liking what they saw, Weaver's teapot seemed to reach back into the past and pull out something unexpected, something stoic, and something symbolic of survival and eventual revival.”
