Megalomania

Megalomania is a psychopathological condition characterized by fantasies of power, relevance, omnipotence, and by inflated self-esteem. Historically it was used as a name for narcissistic personality disorder prior to the latter's first use by Heinz Kohut in 1968, and is used today as a non-clinical equivalent. It is not mentioned in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM) or the International Statistical Classification of Diseases (ICD).

Etymology

The word megalomania is derived from the Greek μεγαλο- megalo- "large, great", and μανία mania "madness, frenzy". Its first attested use in English occurred in 1890, as a translation of the French mégalomanie.

Early Freudianism

Sigmund Freud commented of the adult neurotic's sense of omnipotence that “this belief is a frank acknowledgement of a relic of the old megalomania of infancy”. He similarly concluded that “we can detect an element of megalomania in most other forms of paranoic disorder. We are justified in assuming that this megalomania is essentially of an infantile nature and that, as development proceeds, it is sacrificed to social considerations”.

Origin of Symmetry

Origin of Symmetry is the second studio album by English alternative rock band Muse, released on 17 July 2001 by Mushroom Records and Taste Media. The album was a critical and commercial success in the UK, it peaked at number 3 in the UK Albums Chart and was certified platinum. The title and theme for the album comes from a concept put forward by the theoretical physicist Michio Kaku in his book Hyperspace.

On 26 and 28 August 2011, Muse designed and performed a special set at the Reading and Leeds Festivals to commemorate the 10th anniversary of Origin of Symmetry. The album was played from start to finish, marking the first time certain songs (such as "Darkshines" and "Hyper Music") had been played in several years.

Background

The development of the album came about during the band's extensive touring in promotion of Showbiz, with some of the material written and performed whilst on the road. The name and theme of the album comes from the book Hyperspace by theoretical physicist Michio Kaku. In it he discusses how a future book about the discovery of supersymmetry should be entitled "The Origin of Symmetry", due to its implications in physics, in reference to the impact Charles Darwin's On the Origin of Species had on biology. As is cited by Matt Bellamy: "The name of the album, 'Origin of Symmetry', is from a book about geometry of the universe and how it's all in beautiful balance, a perfect thing in ten dimensions. It explains all the mysterious forces we invented religions around." According to Bellamy, "everyone's been writing about the origin of life so now they'll start looking at the origin of symmetry; there's a certain amount of stability in the universe and to find out where it originates from would be to find out if God exists."

Megalomania (Aqua album)

Megalomania is the third studio album by Danish-Norwegian pop band Aqua. The album was released physically from September 30, 2011 and digitally on October 3, 2011, more than 11 years after the release of their previous studio album, Aquarius (2000). Due to the change of musical style from their previous album, critical reviews were more mixed, and was not as commercially successful either, only peaking at number two in Denmark, and being certified gold by the International Federation of the Phonographic Industry (IFPI).

Background

After their split in 2001 Aqua announced their comeback on October 26, 2007 during a press conference. During the summer of 2008 Aqua played eight concerts in eight different cities as part of the one-day music festival Grøn Koncert in Denmark. On May 25, 2009 they released their first single since 2001, "Back to the 80's" soon followed by the greatest hits album, Greatest Hits. In February 2010 Aqua began working on their third studio album in Thailand. Instead of touring that year, the band focused on writing and producing the album with the desire to create the "world's best pop album". After 18 months of songwriting and more than 100 songs recorded, the band finished the album on 7 July 2011, after 12 months in the studio.

Risk!

RISK! is a weekly podcast and live storytelling show created and hosted by writer and actor Kevin Allison. The show's official website describes RISK! as a place "where people tell true stories they never thought they’d dare to share in public".Risk! started as a weekly live storytelling series in August 2009. Chris Castiglione and Jeff Barr joined in 2010 as part of the founding team.

Format

Each episode of the Risk! podcast starts with an introduction from Kevin Allison. In his introduction, Allison updates listeners about upcoming events that relate to the show and he also introduces that week's theme. Past themes include "Unintended," "New At This," and "Met on the Net."

The show then continues with humorous theme-based first-person narratives that are told by comedians as well as everyday people. The stories from the podcast are usually a combination of material from Kevin Allison, the live show, listener submissions and/or work from The Story Studio. These stories are usually followed by user-submitted interstitial music.

Risk

Risk is the potential of gaining or losing something of value. Values (such as physical health, social status, emotional well-being or financial wealth) can be gained or lost when taking risk resulting from a given action or inaction, foreseen or unforeseen. Risk can also be defined as the intentional interaction with uncertainty. Uncertainty is a potential, unpredictable, and uncontrollable outcome; risk is a consequence of action taken in spite of uncertainty.

Risk perception is the subjective judgment people make about the severity and probability of a risk, and may vary person to person. Any human endeavor carries some risk, but some are much riskier than others.

Definitions

The Oxford English Dictionary cites the earliest use of the word in English (in the spelling of risque from its Arabic original "رزق" ) which mean working to gain income gain and profit (see Wikipedia Arabic meaning ) as of 1621, and the spelling as risk from 1655. It defines risk as:

Risk (magazine)

Risk magazine provides news and analysis covering the financial industry, with a particular focus on financial risk management regulation, and the global derivatives markets. It includes papers on option pricing and hedging, market risk, credit risk, swaps and Monte Carlo methods. Articles include news, comment and mathematical papers on an aspect of derivatives risk and pricing. Risk has a tradition of covers featuring pieces of abstract modern art. It has been described as Incisive Media's "flagship financial management title".

It was founded by Peter Field in 1987. It was owned by Risk Waters Group, then was acquired by Incisive Media, the owners of Post Magazine, Waters (magazine) and Investment Week, Journalists include: Mauro Cesa, Fiona Maxwell, and Peter Madigan, with Duncan Wood as Editor. Energy Risk — a sister title that covers energy trading and risk management — was spun off in 1994.

Risk also runs industry specific events including the annual Risk awards. In 2003 Risk magazine launched Risk.net a financial risk management website which provides news updates as a digital subscription.
