A mother died after trying to save her three-year-old son when he fell down a cliff during a family hike.

Stephanie Cohen died after falling around 60 feet after going after her son Oliver, who survived with serious injuries.

Mrs Cohen, aged 37, had been hiking with several other family members in Oregon, USA, on Sunday afternoon.

As the family was returning, Mrs Cohen's husband took Oliver off his shoulders and he reportedly wandered toward the trail's edge.

Mrs Cohen's mother Lisa Schroeder told NBC affiliate KGW: "His foot wiggled on a rock and he started to go down.

"She just did what she instinctively thought to do and that was go after him."

Police said both fell around 60 feet off the cliff before tumbling another 20 to 30 feet down a slope.

Mrs Cohen was pronounced dead at the scene, while Oliver was taken to hospital.
