An abbey (from Latin abbatia, from Latin abbās, derived from Aramaic abba, "father") is a Catholic, Anglican, or Orthodox Christian monastery or convent. Abbeys usually fall under the authority of an Abbot or an Abbess who serves as the spiritual father or mother of the community.
The term can also refer to a former abbey (for example, Westminster Abbey).
The formation of monastic communities dates back to pre-Christian times, as witnessed by the Essenes. The earliest known Christian monasteries consisted of groups of huts built near the location of a famous ascetic or other holy person. As these communities of disciples grew, they attracted people who desired to study the ascetic's doctrine and imitate his or her way of life.
In the earliest age of Christian monasticism, the ascetics were accustomed to living alone. Ascetics would typically live near a village church, supporting themselves while also donating their excess food to the poor. Increasing religious fervor and persecution drove them farther away from civilization into solitude. The deserts of Egypt hosted some of the "cells" or huts of these anchorites.

The 168 Film Project is a Christian film festival.
The contest starts with the random assignment of verses based on a theme from the scriptures. Writing and preproduction is the next phase, followed by exactly one week (168 hours) to shoot and edit a finished film. If the film is on time and at or under the required total run time, then it is eligible for awards. Worldwide, over 750 short films have been produced for the competition from 2003 to 2012.
Founded by John David Ware in 2003, the 168 Film Project started with 13 entries.
The 2013 "Best Film" prize was awarded to ReMoved, a film based on the 2013 festival's assigned theme of "atonement".
In 2012 "Best Film" was given to "Refuge", produced by Paul e Luebbers and Joel VanderSpek. The "Best International Film" award presented to "Ghosts of Europe" produced by Jesse Hutch and Jamie Rauch.
The film "Useless", produced by Dennis & Olivia Bentivengo, was awarded "Best Film". "Best Director" to Owen Kingston, Tom Cooper for "Child’s Play".
A film festival is an organized, extended presentation of films in one or more cinemas or screening venues, usually in a single city or region. Increasingly, film festivals show some films outdoors. Films may be of recent date and, depending upon the festival's focus, can include international and domestic releases. Some festivals focus on a specific film-maker or genre (e.g., film noir) or subject matter (e.g., horror film festivals). A number of film festivals specialise in short films of a defined maximum length. Film festivals are typically annual events. Some film historians do not consider Film Festivals as official releases of film, like Jerry Beck. The best known film festivals are the Venice Film Festival, the Cannes Film Festival, the Toronto Film Festival, Sundance Film Festival, and the Berlin International Film Festival, the latter being the largest film festival worldwide, based on attendance. The Venice Film Festival is the oldest major festival. The Melbourne International Film Festival is the largest film festival in the Southern Hemisphere and one of the oldest in the world. A 2013 study found 3,000 active films festivals worldwide—active defined as having held an event in the previous 24 months.

"Ape Man" by The Marcus Hook Roll Band. AC/DC played their first gig at the end of 1973... that was a few months after this recording was made, in August 1973. THE MARCUS HOOK ROLL BAND was the last thing the Young Brothers did before they launched AC/DC. I produced a couple of singles of The MHRB at Abbey Road, when they were living in the UK, but then they went back to Australia. Meantime Capitol records, the American label had heard the singles that I'd made, and asked EMI for an album of The Band. So I was sent to Australia to record one. That was just about the same time that I was due to start work on another album of 'THE PRETTY THINGS with Philippe Debarge' - but that had to wait for another year. On this track - "Ape Man" (which has been specially tweaked for Facebook), I was si...

The choir of Westminster Abbey sing the stirring hymn "Praise, my soul, the King of heaven" with words by Henry Francis Lyte (1793-1847). The trebles sing the penultimate verse on their own before they sing a soaring descant during the final verse. The pictures are all of Westminster Abbey with the final picture being the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which is situated inside the Abbey's western entrance.
This is the unbelievable behind the scenes true story of the collapse of a feature film. Shot in the '90s, before reality TV and before Digital cameras, The Unmaking Of… went on to achieve great notoriety as a must see underground film for most in Hollywood. The Unmaking Of... has been shown in film festivals and in many Collage film courses, it is also widely believed to be the inspiration for the TV show PROJECT GREEN LIGHT.

The late eighteenth and early nineteenth- century vogue for the Picturesque and for forging an English landscaping tradition (with frameable landscape scenery and managed wildness) will be the starting point for discussion. Proponents of the Picturesque, preferring to explore British scenery rather than go on the European Grand Tour, explicitly cultivated notions of Englishness and stress the native elements in landscape scenery, such as castle or abbey ruins (real or folly) in grand gardens, not classical temples. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: https://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/english-landscape-the-picturesque Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. On the 21st November 2013, the day before the 50th anniversary of C.S. Lewis' death, Westminster Abbey Institute hosted a C.S. Lewis Symposium in honour of his apologetics legacy, held in St Margaret's Church, Westminster. In this second lecture, "Telling the Truth Through Imaginative Fiction", Dr Malcolm Guite reads from the poetry and storytelling of C.S. Lewis, examining how Lewis sought to reconcile the perceived conflict between imagination and reason, and the vital role imagination would ultimately play in Lewis's apologetics. This is followed by questions from the audience. Christian Evidence thanks Westminster Abbey Institute for their permission to film the event. Eileen Atkins stars as Celia, a cautious seller of old furniture and clocks, in Alan Bennett's spellbinding monologue The Hand of God, a perfectly paced 32-minute gem. Filmed in half-a-dozen simple scenes set in a modest antiques shop, the story involves Celia's daily battle to keep the stock moving. Celia is an antiques dealer who just about manages to make a living but with stock ever harder to come by. Then one day Celia lucks into a Good Samaritan relationship with Miss Ventriss, a dying woman who owns a home stocked with treasures. It's almost more than Celia's honest, if avaricious, conscience can bear. As in many of Bennett's pieces, the story develops in a miraculous direction that gives it the taut impact of a fable -- or at least the sober moral of a cautionary tale. YOU MUST HOW...
