Orvieto is a city in south-western Umbria (Italy), located only 100 km north of Rome, on quite flat summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. It is famous for the Cathedral, which hosts the Corporal of Bolsena. The Gothic façade of the Cathedral is one of the best masterpieces of Middle Age. Other interesting highlights include Palazzo del Popolo, Palazzo Comunale, Via della Cava, Pozzo di San Patrizio.

Orvieto is one of the quintessential hill-towns of central Italy. It perches on a rock crag above all the landscape. Not only does it occupy an amazing location, it also displays an intriguing collection of fascinating architecture. The Duomo, in particular, has a wonderful, rustic feeling yet features frescos by Fra Angelica.

Orvieto is a city and comune in Province of Terni, southwestern Umbria, Italy situated on the flat summit of a large butte of volcanic tuff. The site of the city is among the most dramatic in Europe, rising above the almost-vertical faces of tuff cliffs that are completed by defensive walls built of the same stone called Tufa.
The ancient city (urbs vetus in Latin, whence "Orvieto"), populated since Etruscan times, has usually been associated with Etruscan Velzna, but some modern scholars differ. Orvieto was certainly a major centre of Etruscan civilization; the archaeological museum (Museo Claudio Faina e Museo Civico) houses some of the Etruscan artefacts that have been recovered in the immediate neighbourhood. An interesting survival that might show the complexity of ethnic relations in ancient Italy and how such relations could be peaceful, is the inscription on a tomb in the Orvieto Cannicella necropolis: mi aviles katacinas, "I am of Avile Katacina", with an Etruscan-Latin first name (Aulus) and a family name that is believed to be of Celtic ("Catacos") origin.

Duomo di Orvieto - Gli affreschi di Luca Signorelli nella Cappella di S. Brizio
Edificata tra il 1406 e il 1425, la Cappella di San Brizio nel Duomo di Orvieto si apre sulla testata destra del transetto. I lavori per la sua decorazione iniziarono nel 1447. Il primo incarico venne dato al Beato Angelico, affiancato poi da giovani artisti, fra i quali Benozzo Gozzoli, per accelerare i lavori che procedevano troppo a rilento. L'espediente non raggiunse lo scopo, e nel 1499 l'incarico passò a Luca Signorelli, noto all'epoca per la sua abilità nel raffigurare i corpi umani e per l'uso sapiente della prospettiva. Il pittore di Cortona in meno di cinque anni ha realizzato l'opera che l'ha reso celebre. This is a fascinating walk exploring the underground Etruscan and medieval caves of Orvieto. The site was discovered by local speleologists and today can be visited with a guided tour. The tour takes you through a series of tunnels and underground rooms dug in the tufa rock, where visitors can admire the different historic ages of Orvieto. Visitors can see an ancient medieval olive oil mill, including the press, the fireplace and the original "colombai" (dovecotes), which are holes dug in the wall and used during the Middle Ages to raise doves. Along the promenade, there are also several Etruscan rooms that reveal how the city of Orvieto had gone through several centuries of history and many different civilizations. -

Orvieto es una preciosa ciudad de la Umbría, región italiana que ha dado a la Iglesia innumerables santos. Basta mencionar a San Francisco, Sta. Clara de Asís, Sta. Clara de Montefalco, San Valentín, San Benito, Sta. Rita... Edificata tra il 1406 e il 1425, la Cappella di San Brizio nel Duomo di Orvieto si apre sulla testata destra del transetto.
I lavori per la sua decorazione iniziarono nel 1447. Il primo incarico venne dato al Beato Angelico, affiancato poi da giovani artisti, fra i quali Benozzo Gozzoli, per accelerare i lavori che procedevano troppo a rilento.
L'espediente non raggiunse lo scopo, e nel 1499 l'incarico passò a Luca Signorelli, noto all'epoca per la sua abilità nel raffigurare i corpi umani e per l'uso sapiente della prospettiva.
Il pittore di Cortona in meno di cinque anni ha realizzato l'opera che l'ha reso celebre. The tour takes you through a series of tunnels and underground rooms dug in the tufa rock, where visitors can admire the different historic ages of Orvieto. Visitors can see an ancient medieval olive oil mill, including the press, the fireplace and the original "colombai" (dovecotes), which are holes dug in the wall and used during the Middle Ages to raise doves. Along the promenade, there are also several Etruscan rooms that reveal how the city of Orvieto had gone through several centuries of history and many different civilizations.

MILAGRO EUCARISTICO DE ORVIETO / BOLSENA
Orvieto no se puede olvidar porque allí se encuentra un prodigio divino. Su catedral es custodia de un milagro Eucarístico que se puede venerar en la capilla izquierda. Se trata de un corporal que muestra la Sangre que brotó de una Sagrada Hostia.
En el año 1264 el Padre Pedro de Praga, Bohemia, dudaba sobre el misterio de la transustanciación del Cuerpo y de la Sangre de Cristo en la Eucaristía. Acudió así en peregrinación a Roma para pedir sobre la tumba de San Pedro la gracia de una fe fuerte. De regreso de Roma, Dios se le manifestó de manera milagrosa ya que cuando cuando celebraba la Santa Misa en Bolsena, en la cripta de Santa Cristina, la Sagrada Hostia sangró llenando el Corporal de la Preciosa Sangre.
La noticia del prodigio llegó pronto al Papa Urbano IV, que se encontraba en Orvieto, ciudad cercana a Bolsena. Hizo traer el corporal y, al constatar los hechos, instituyó la Solemnidad de Corpus Christi.
El mismo Papa Urbano IV encargó a Sto. Tomás de Aquino la preparación de un oficio litúrgico propio para esta fiesta y la creación de cantos e himnos para celebrar a Cristo Eucaristía. Entre los que compuso está la sublime secuencia "Lauda Sion" que se canta en la Misa de Corpus Christi.
El año 1290 el Papa Nicolás IV, a petición del clero y del pueblo, colocó la primera piedra de la nueva catedral de Orvieto donde aun se encuentra la sagrada reliquia.

Originally this church was built in the Thirteenth Century by Domenican friars, and had a much wider structure, with a large adjacent cloister. Part of the church was demolished during Mussolini's Fascist rein in order to build a female military academy (one of the first ones in Italy). For several years this large church was the "Duomo" of Orvieto. It also was the site where important events happened, such as the coronation of the French king Louis IX by Pope Bonifacio the Eight. The long bridge into Civita is steep -- and it gets steeper as it rises. This is a challenging climb for anyone not in particularly good shape.

Renaissance Palace remains All that remains of an old palace is the facade, the rest collapsed into the canyon from erosion of the hill Civita sits on.
Piazza The town's only public phone is at the piazza, the site of donkey races on the first Sunday in June and the second Sunday of September. The columns are Etruscan. In the evening, the piazza is the place to be, as what's left of the town socializes there.
Church On the piazza, this church is on the site of an Etruscan temple, and after that a Roman temple. It has a fine campanile (bell tower), altar, and crucifix.
Maria's Garden Follow the main road to the far side of town to see a lovely garden with knockout canyon views. If the garden is open, Maria will greet you in a small piazza and urge you to see it. She shows the garden to visitors for pocket change; give her a euro or two.
Etruscan Caves A series of caves at the east end of town, one of which was made into a chapel, called the Chapel of the Incarcerated.

Renaissance Palace remains All that remains of an old palace is the facade, the rest collapsed into the canyon from erosion of the hill Civita sits on.
Piazza The town's only public phone is at the piazza, the site of donkey races on the first Sunday in June and the second Sunday of September. The columns are Etruscan. In the evening, the piazza is the place to be, as what's left of the town socializes there.
Church On the piazza, this church is on the site of an Etruscan temple, and after that a Roman temple. It has a fine campanile (bell tower), altar, and crucifix.
Maria's Garden Follow the main road to the far side of town to see a lovely garden with knockout canyon views. If the garden is open, Maria will greet you in a small piazza and urge you to see it. She shows the garden to visitors for pocket change; give her a euro or two.
Etruscan Caves A series of caves at the east end of town, one of which was made into a chapel, called the Chapel of the Incarcerated.

For many years it was attended by Franciscan and Dominican friars that live in Orvieto. Next to the church is the old convent, which today houses the Orvieto Public Library. The convent was founded by Saint Frances in 1220.

My last full day in Europe had started. June 13, 2010 was a Sunday, and I felt like getting out of the hustle and bustle of Rome to check out a quieter and smaller town in the countryside. After some research I settled on the medieval town of Orvieto which is located about an hour from Rome by train.
Shortly after 10 am I arrived at the train station in Orvieto and took the funicular up the steep mountainside to the old medieval walled town which is located on a volcanic crag. The city was nice and quiet and I strolled past several small public parks that provided phenomenal lookout points of the countryside that was stretching out below.
About 20 minutes later I arrived on the Piazza del Duomo, and was awestruck by Orvieto's Cathedral, a true medieval masterpiece. Started in 1290, the building is renowned for its lavish multi-coloured façade frescoes from the 13th and 14th centuries. The exterior of the church consists of strips of white travertine and black basalt which give it a very unique appearance.
The downtown of Orvieto is characterized by a maze of narrow cobble-stoned streets full of churches. After an extensive stroll through this atmospheric town I sat down for lunch at a nice pizzeria and then headed back to the main square. By that time, the piazza had filled up with classic cars, including Ferraris, old BMWs and Porsches, for the Modena Cento Ore Classic Rally.
In the mid-afternoon I took the train back to Rome, relaxed for a bit and headed out for an evening stroll to the Piazza del Popolo and the Via del Corso. After a brief visit to the Trevi Fountain I ducked into a little restaurant to have a tasty Italian pasta dinner before I took the bus back to my B&B; close to the Termini Railway Station.

Rome had a gorgeous hot day for me in store on June 11, 2010. In the morning I used up the remainder of my sightseeing bus ticket which was good for 24 hours and after rolling past the Colosseum I exited on the Piazza Bocca della Verita and strolled across the Tiber River on the Ponte Palatine. I wanted to check out the Isola Tiberina, the only island in the Tiber River, which today houses the Fatebenefratelli Hospital. On the way there I was admiring the Smart Cars that were parked sideways in tiny parking spots along the Tiber River.
Back on the left bank of the Tiber I continued up to the Piazza Giovanni XII and up the Via della Conciliazione until I was standing on the large square right in front of Saint Peter's Basilica. Thousands of people were attending mass, and a policeman confirmed for me that it was Pope Benedict XVIwho was holding mass.
After strolling past the ancient Castell Sant' Angelo I walked across the Ponte Sant' Angelo with its many statues back to the eastern bank of the Tiber into a maze of narrow cobble-stoned pedestrian streets filled with atmospheric restaurants and bars. In quick succession I ended up visiting some of Rome's major sights: the gorgeous Piazza Navona, the Pantheon -- which quickly become my favourite building in Rome; the iconic Fontana di Trevi; and the Spanish Steps, certainly a huge favourite among all the tourists.
Then I made my way east to the Equiline Hill, to a company called Top Bike Rental, a local bicycle touring company, to go on a two-wheeled tour of Rome. Ciro, the owner, introduced me to my local expert guide Roberto, who was going to take me and another Canadian tourist on a 6-hour bicycle tour on the Ancient Appian Way.
Roberto is an excellent guide, with lots of historic knowledge and real insider knowledge of Roman culture. Our stops included the Colle Oppio, the Colosseum and the Aurelian Wall, from where we headed into the countryside on the Ancient Appian Way. We stopped at the San Callisto Catacombs and learned about early Christian burial practices and continued our pastoral bike ride to Aqueduct Park, a popular place for dogwalkers and cyclists right next to a 2000 year old aqueduct.
On the way back we cycled through Caffarella Park and stopped at Azienda Agricola La Caffarella -- an old farm where owner Signora Maria treated us with local wine, ewe's cheese and Italian bread. On our way back we stopped at the Baths of Caracalla and cycled leisurely past the Colosseum again before arriving back at the office shortly before 8 pm. Another full day in Rome!

The gorgeous Roman weather continued on June 12, 2010. After a full day of sightseeing in Rome the day before I decided it was time for a little out-of-town excursion. So I went to the Termini Train Station and bought a ticket to Frascati, a city in the mountains just about an hour southeast of Rome. Once arrived in this scenic spot, I walked around for a couple of hours and stumbled upon the main square where a market was set up and the locals were sitting on benches chatting. I chatted with one local merchant and ended up buying a porchetta sandwich -- a delicious traditional local snack of slow-roasted pork inside a crispy bun.
A couple of hours later I headed back to Rome for my second city bicycle tour with my expert guide Roberto from Top Bike Rental: the Panoramic Tour of Rome. We started our ride on the Equiline Hill, rode down on the Oppian Hill past the Colosseum and up on the other side to the Aventine Hill from where we enjoyed a gorgeous view across to the Vatican. Coming down on the west side of the hill we cycled into Trastevere, the quarter on the other side of the Tiber River, with its narrow cobble-stoned streets and dozens of restaurants and bars. Trastevere has evolved from a rather poor fishing village into one of Rome's most popular entertainment and real estate districts.
Past Trastevere we started cycling up another hill, this time it was the Janiculum Hill (Gianicolo in Italian), past the gorgeous Fonte Acqua Paola fountain, a huge fountain that marked the end of the Acqua Paola aqueduct. On top of the hill we cycled through the Parco Gianicolense to the Monument to Garibaldi, past the Gianicolo Lighthouse and down on the other side towards the Vatican.
Roberto gave us about an hour and a half to explore Saint Peter's Basilica, the world's largest church which holds about 60,000 people, one of Christianity's holiest sites. Construction on the church started in 1506 and was completed at the end of 1626 and it holds some of western art's most treasured works, including Michelangelo's Pieta. The interior of St. Peter's Basilica is so massive and so intricately adorned, it simply takes your breath away. I was extremely impressed by this mysterious, beautiful space.
Further points on our itinerary included the Castell Sant' Angelo, and back on the other side of the Tiber River, the Piazza Navona, the Fontana di Trevi, and the Pantheon. Towards the evening we cycled through the Jewish Ghetto to the ancient Teatro Marcello and then came back via the Campidoglio on the Capitoline Hill, from where we had the most amazing view of the ancient sites that are part of the Roman Forum. By this time the ancient ruins were bathed in gold by the setting sun -- an almost surreal vista. Rome's packed collection of ancient architectural treasures is absolutely mind-blowing.

Roberto gave us about an hour and a half to explore Saint Peter's Basilica, the world's largest church which holds about 60,000 people, one of Christianity's holiest sites. Construction on the church started in 1506 and was completed at the end of 1626 and it holds some of western art's most treasured works, including Michelangelo's Pieta. The interior of St. Peter's Basilica is so massive and so intricately adorned, it simply takes your breath away. I was extremely impressed by this mysterious, beautiful space.
Further points on our itinerary included the Castell Sant' Angelo, and back on the other side of the Tiber River, the Piazza Navona, the Fontana di Trevi, and the Pantheon. Towards the evening we cycled through the Jewish Ghetto to the ancient Teatro Marcello and then came back via the Campidoglio on the Capitoline Hill, from where we had the most amazing view of the ancient sites that are part of the Roman Forum. By this time the ancient ruins were bathed in gold by the setting sun -- an almost surreal vista. Rome's packed collection of ancient architectural treasures is absolutely mind-blowing.
