(* Update links below) The Russian Urals region has been stricken by a sudden cosmic attack. Unidentified flying objects exploded over several major cities, including Chelyabinsk, where the blast waves blew out windows and disrupted mobile connections.
The Emergency Ministry said the incident was caused by a shower of meteorite debris. Unconfirmed reports suggested that a meteorite was shot down by Russian air defenses. Multiple dashboard videos appeared online, showing huge fireballs flying over buildings and exploding with a strong blast. A local zinc factory was the worst-hit, with some of its walls collapsed.

9:07 GMT: "The object could be about a meter in diameter and weigh a few tons," said Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics. "As it entered the atmosphere, it broke into a cloud of pieces that flew on, creating a blast wave and emitting light. That's where the flashes came from, as well as broken windows. Most of the object's material evaporated, the remaining pieces slowed down and fell. It was most likely of iron nature as it penetrated so far through the atmosphere. However, we still don't have the exact data on the debris."
8:56 GMT: The Chelyabinsk regional governor reported that an emergency team discovered that a meteorite fell into a lake near the town of Chebarkul.

CCTV cameras register the moment of explosion
8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. "We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky," he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.

7:46 GMT: Ekaterinburg's observatory has officially deemed the incident a fireball meteor shower. No evacuations were called for, and radiation levels were determined to be normal.

A meteor streaked across the sky above Russia's Ural Mountains on Friday morning, causing sharp explosions and reportedly injuring around 100 people, including many hurt by broken glass.

Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 102 people had called for medical assistance following the incident, mostly for treatment of injuries from glass broken by the explosions.
Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed.
Reports conflicted on what exactly happened in the clear skies. A spokeswoman for the Emergency Ministry, Irina Rossius, told The Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman, Elena Smirnikh, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteorite.
Amateur video broadcast on Russian television showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT), leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

Apophis asteroid: Large space rock flies past Earth
A 300 metre-wide asteroid is making a close pass to the Earth.
Apophis - named after the Egyptian demon of destruction and darkness - has been put on a watch list by scientists.
They have calculated that in 2036 there is a very small chance it could collide with our planet.
However, its current fly-by is at a safe distance of about 14 million km - but this is close enough for astronomers to study the space rock and assess its future risk.
Apophis will not be visible with the naked eye, but space enthusiasts can watch it online via the Slooh space camera

A meteor weighing 10,000 metric tons exploded only 23km above the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia on February 15, 2013. Unlike previous such events, this time scientists had the highly sensitive OMPS instrument on NPP to deliver unprecedented data and help them track and study the meteor plume for months. This video shows how accurately the model prediction coincided with the satellite observations.

Divers have retrieved an enormous fragment of the meteor that exploded over Russia in February. It has been brought up from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul in the Urals.
The piece of space rock is believed to be the largest to hit earth when a meteor broke up
above the towns of Chelyabinsk, Yekatarinburg and Tyumen.
Scientists from the University of Chelyabinsk led the recovery. Andrei Kochekov, Director of Innovation and Expertise at the university, told reporters: "If its weight is more than 500 kilograms then the object is unique in itself. One of the biggest meteors of its class, the stone type."
The force of the shock wave of the meteorite was estimated to be as strong as 20 Hiroshima atomic bombs. More than 1,600 people were injured by the effects of its landing.
Thousands more watched in awe as the meteor exploded before their eyes, falling to earth in a shower of light.

Flying nearly three hours east from Moscow by plane, I landed in Chelyabinsk.
From a modern Moscow international airport to a country airport is quite an eye-opener. We waited patiently near the luggage conveyor belt fro 30 minutes. It made these tired repetitious noises and was almost 70 years old. Over this old contraptions was a brand new huge LED TV, pushing out loud advertisements. What a contrast. Next to the conveyor belt, was a booth with a black telephone, which probably was operational during the WW2. Extraordinary interesting, I felt.
During our day-excursion many other typical Russians things, like Kvass. It is made from bread and tastes-in my opinion- like boiled old socks. Even after drinking half a litre, I could not get used to it. May be when it is a very hot day, I would enjoy it.
Later, in the early evening, we made started our journey to Zlatoust, a two hour bus journey through the middle of Russia. Contemplating in my seat, having my future-wife next to me, I remembered these horrible days in court of custody battle and property settlements,- but now I had a new promising future, together with a great adventure. Chelyabinsk (Russian: Челябинск; IPA: [tɕɪˈlʲæbʲɪnsk] (
listen)) is a city and the administrative center of Chelyabinsk Oblast, Russia, located in the northwestern side of the oblast, 210 kilometers (130 mi) south of Yekaterinburg, just to the east of the Ural Mountains, on the Miass River. It is located on the border of Europe and Asia. Population: 1,130,273 (2010 Census preliminary results); 1,077,174 (2002 Census); 1,141,777 (1989 Census).
The fortress of Chelyaba, from which the city takes its name, was constructed on the site in 1736; town status was granted to it in 1781. Around 1900, it served as a center for the construction of the Trans-Siberian Railway. According to official statistics the population on 1 January 1913 was 45,000 inhabitants.
For several months during the Russian Civil War, Chelyabinsk was held by the White movement and Czechoslovak Legions, becoming a center for splinters of the Romanian Volunteer Corps in Russia. The city later fell to Bolshevik Russian forces.

A meteor weighing 10,000 metric tons exploded only 23km above the city of Chelyabinsk in Russia on February 15, 2013. Unlike previous such events, this time scientists had the highly sensitive OMPS instrument on NPP to deliver unprecedented data and help them track and study the meteor plume for months. This video shows how accurately the model prediction coincided with the satellite observations. It has been brought up from the bottom of Lake Chebarkul in the Urals. The piece of space rock is believed to be the largest to hit earth when a meteor broke up above the towns of Chelyabinsk, Yekatarinburg and Tyumen. Scientists from the University of Chelyabinsk led the recovery. Andrei Kochekov, Director of Innovation and Expertise at the university, told reporters: "If its weight is more than 500 kilograms then the object is unique in itself. One of the biggest meteors of its class, the stone type." The force of the shock wave of the meteorite was estimated to be as strong as 20 Hiroshima atomic bombs. More than 1,600 people were injured by the effects of its landing. Thousands more watched in awe as the meteor exploded before their eyes, falling to earth in a shower of light. Flying nearly three hours east from Moscow by plane, I landed in Chelyabinsk. From a modern Moscow international airport to a country airport is quite an eye-opener. We waited patiently near the luggage conveyor belt fro 30 minutes. It made these tired repetitious noises and was almost 70 years old. Over this old contraptions was a brand new huge LED TV, pushing out loud advertisements. What a contrast. Next to the conveyor belt, was a booth with a black telephone, which probably was operational during the WW2. Extraordinary interesting, I felt. During our day-excursion many other typical Russians things, like Kvass. It is made from bread and tastes-in my opinion- like boiled old socks. Even after drinking half a litre, I could not get used to it. May be when it is a very hot day, I would enjoy it. Later, in the early evening, we made started our journey to Zlatoust, a two hour bus journey through the middle of Russia. Contemplating in my seat, having my future-wife next to me, I remembered these horrible days in court of custody battle and property settlements,- but now I had a new promising future, together with a great adventure. The Chelyabinsk meteor was a superbolide caused by a near-Earth asteroid that entered Earth's atmosphere over Russia on 15 February 2013 at about 09:20 YEKT (03:20 UTC), with a speed of 19.16 ± 0.15 kilometres per second (60,000–69,000 km/h or 40,000–42,900 mph). 'Shock and frustration': Locals report on meteorite crash in Russian Urals (VIDEO)

9:07 GMT: "The object could be about a meter in diameter and weigh a few tons," said Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics. "As it entered the atmosphere, it broke into a cloud of pieces that flew on, creating a blast wave and emitting light. That's where the flashes came from, as well as broken windows. Most of the object's material evaporated, the remaining pieces slowed down and fell. It was most likely of iron nature as it penetrated so far through the atmosphere. However, we still don't have the exact data on the debris."
8:56 GMT: The Chelyabinsk regional governor reported that an emergency team discovered that a meteorite fell into a lake near the town of Chebarkul.
8:49 GMT: The number of people requesting medical assistance has risen to 500.
8:30 GMT: Residents of Chelyabinsk buy out plastic wrap to screen the windows blown off by the meteor shower blast wave, as temperatures are expected to fall to -14°C at night.
8:20 GMT: More than 400 people have requested medical attention for minor injuries after a meteor shower hit the Russian Urals region. The number of injured may change, police said.

CCTV cameras register the moment of explosion
8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. "We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky," he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.
8:03 GMT:Up to 250 injured, 3 in critical condition after meteorite hits
7:46 GMT: Ekaterinburg's observatory has officially deemed the incident a fireball meteor shower. No evacuations were called for, and radiation levels were determined to be normal.

(* Update links below) The Russian Urals region has been stricken by a sudden cosmic attack. Unidentified flying objects exploded over several major cities, including Chelyabinsk, where the blast waves blew out windows and disrupted mobile connections.
The Emergency Ministry said the incident was caused by a shower of meteorite debris. Unconfirmed reports suggested that a meteorite was shot down by Russian air defenses. Multiple dashboard videos appeared online, showing huge fireballs flying over buildings and exploding with a strong blast. A local zinc factory was the worst-hit, with some of its walls collapsed.

9:07 GMT: "The object could be about a meter in diameter and weigh a few tons," said Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics. "As it entered the atmosphere, it broke into a cloud of pieces that flew on, creating a blast wave and emitting light. That's where the flashes came from, as well as broken windows. Most of the object's material evaporated, the remaining pieces slowed down and fell. It was most likely of iron nature as it penetrated so far through the atmosphere. However, we still don't have the exact data on the debris."
8:56 GMT: The Chelyabinsk regional governor reported that an emergency team discovered that a meteorite fell into a lake near the town of Chebarkul.
8:49 GMT: The number of people requesting medical assistance has risen to 500.

CCTV cameras register the moment of explosion
8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. "We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky," he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.

7:46 GMT: Ekaterinburg's observatory has officially deemed the incident a fireball meteor shower. No evacuations were called for, and radiation levels were determined to be normal.

Fragments of the meteor fell in a thinly populated area of the Chelyabinsk region, the Emergency Ministry said in a statement.
Interior Ministry spokesman Vadim Kolesnikov said 102 people had called for medical assistance following the incident, mostly for treatment of injuries from glass broken by the explosions.
Kolsenikov also said about 600 square meters (6000 square feet) of a roof at a zinc factory had collapsed.
Reports conflicted on what exactly happened in the clear skies. A spokeswoman for the Emergency Ministry, Irina Rossius, told The Associated Press that there was a meteor shower, but another ministry spokeswoman, Elena Smirnikh, was quoted by the Interfax news agency as saying it was a single meteorite.
Amateur video broadcast on Russian television showed an object speeding across the sky about 9:20 a.m. local time (0320 GMT), leaving a thick white contrail and an intense flash.

A 300 metre-wide asteroid is making a close pass to the Earth.
Apophis - named after the Egyptian demon of destruction and darkness - has been put on a watch list by scientists.
They have calculated that in 2036 there is a very small chance it could collide with our planet.
However, its current fly-by is at a safe distance of about 14 million km - but this is close enough for astronomers to study the space rock and assess its future risk.
Apophis will not be visible with the naked eye, but space enthusiasts can watch it online via the Slooh space camera

The piece of space rock is believed to be the largest to hit earth when a meteor broke up
above the towns of Chelyabinsk, Yekatarinburg and Tyumen.
Scientists from the University of Chelyabinsk led the recovery. Andrei Kochekov, Director of Innovation and Expertise at the university, told reporters: "If its weight is more than 500 kilograms then the object is unique in itself. One of the biggest meteors of its class, the stone type."
The force of the shock wave of the meteorite was estimated to be as strong as 20 Hiroshima atomic bombs. More than 1,600 people were injured by the effects of its landing.
Thousands more watched in awe as the meteor exploded before their eyes, falling to earth in a shower of light.

Flying nearly three hours east from Moscow by plane, I landed in Chelyabinsk.
From a modern Moscow international airport to a country airport is quite an eye-opener. We waited patiently near the luggage conveyor belt fro 30 minutes. It made these tired repetitious noises and was almost 70 years old. Over this old contraptions was a brand new huge LED TV, pushing out loud advertisements. What a contrast. Next to the conveyor belt, was a booth with a black telephone, which probably was operational during the WW2. Extraordinary interesting, I felt.
During our day-excursion many other typical Russians things, like Kvass. It is made from bread and tastes-in my opinion- like boiled old socks. Even after drinking half a litre, I could not get used to it. May be when it is a very hot day, I would enjoy it.
Later, in the early evening, we made started our journey to Zlatoust, a two hour bus journey through the middle of Russia. Contemplating in my seat, having my future-wife next to me, I remembered these horrible days in court of custody battle and property settlements,- but now I had a new promising future, together with a great adventure. During our day-excursion many other typical Russians things, like Kvass. It is made from bread and tastes-in my opinion- like boiled old socks. Even after drinking half a litre, I could not get used to it. May be when it is a very hot day, I would enjoy it.
Later, in the early evening, we made started our journey to Zlatoust, a two hour bus journey through the middle of Russia. Contemplating in my seat, having my future-wife next to me, I remembered these horrible days in court of custody battle and property settlements,- but now I had a new promising future, together with a great adventure. The Russian Urals region has been stricken by a sudden cosmic attack. Unidentified flying objects exploded over several major cities, including Chelyabinsk, where the blast waves blew out windows and disrupted mobile connections.
The Emergency Ministry said the incident was caused by a shower of meteorite debris. Unconfirmed reports suggested that a meteorite was shot down by Russian air defenses. Multiple dashboard videos appeared online, showing huge fireballs flying over buildings and exploding with a strong blast. A local zinc factory was the worst-hit, with some of its walls collapsed.

9:07 GMT: "The object could be about a meter in diameter and weigh a few tons," said Valeriy Shuvalov of the Institute of Geosphere Dynamics. "As it entered the atmosphere, it broke into a cloud of pieces that flew on, creating a blast wave and emitting light. That's where the flashes came from, as well as broken windows. Most of the object's material evaporated, the remaining pieces slowed down and fell. It was most likely of iron nature as it penetrated so far through the atmosphere. However, we still don't have the exact data on the debris."
8:56 GMT: The Chelyabinsk regional governor reported that an emergency team discovered that a meteorite fell into a lake near the town of Chebarkul.
8:49 GMT: The number of people requesting medical assistance has risen to 500.

CCTV cameras register the moment of explosion
8:10 GMT: Oleg Malkov, an aerospace scientist at Moscow State University, told Komsomolskaya Pravda newspaper that the meteorite went undetected by space scanners, likely because it was coming from the direction of the Sun. "We can only register stones coming from the direction of the night sky," he explained. Malkov confirmed that the meteor shower in the Urals was not connected to the 2012DA14 asteroid that will approach Earth in a few hours.
8:03 GMT:Up to 250 injured, 3 in critical condition after meteorite hits
7:46 GMT: Ekaterinburg's observatory has officially deemed the incident a fireball meteor shower. No evacuations were called for, and radiation levels were determined to be normal.
7:40 GMT: Vice Premier Dmitry Rogozin wrote on Twitter that he will offer suggestions to Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev on how to prevent or mitigate meteorite damage in future.

El 15 de febrero de 2013, un objeto entró en la atmósfera de la Tierra sobre Rusia en aproximadamente YEKT 09.25 (03.25 GMT), convirtiéndose en una bola de fuego. Moviéndose a una velocidad de 15 km / s a 18 km / s (34,000 mph a 40.000 millas por hora), que pasó por encima de la región de los Urales del sur y explotó sobre Chelyabinsk Oblast. The Chelyabinsk meteor was a superbolide caused by a near-Earth asteroid that entered Earth's atmosphere over Russia on 15 February 2013 at about 09:20 YEKT (03:20 UTC), with a speed of 19.16 ± 0.15 kilometres per second (60,000–69,000 km/h or 40,000–42,900 mph). It quickly became a brilliant superbolide meteor over the southern Ural region. The light from the meteor was brighter than the Sun, even at 100 km distance. It was observed over a wide area of the region and in neighbouring republics. Some eyewitnesses also felt intense heat from the fireball. On account of its high velocity and shallow angle of atmospheric entry, the object exploded in an air burst over Chelyabinsk Oblast, at a height of around 29.7 km (18.4 miles, 97,400 feet). The explosion generated a bright flash, producing a hot cloud of dust and gas that penetrated to 26.2 km, and many surviving small fragmentary meteorites, as well as a large shock wave. The bulk of the object's energy was absorbed by the atmosphere, with a total kinetic energy before atmospheric impact equivalent to approximately 500 kilotons of TNT (about 1.8 PJ), 20–30 times more energy than was released from the atomic bomb detonated at Hiroshima. The object was undetected before its atmospheric entry, in part because its radiant was close to the Sun. Its explosion created panic among local residents, and about 1,500 people were injured seriously enough to seek medical treatment. All of the injuries were due to indirect effects rather than the meteor itself, mainly from broken glass from windows that were blown in when the shock wave arrived, minutes after the superbolide's flash. Some 7,200 buildings in six cities across the region were damaged by the explosion's shock wave, and authorities scrambled to help repair the structures in sub-zero (°C) temperatures. With an estimated initial mass of about 12,000–13,000 metric tonnes (13,000–14,000 short tons, heavier than the Eiffel Tower), and measuring about 20 metres in diameter, it is the largest known natural object to have entered Earth's atmosphere since the 1908 Tunguska event, which destroyed a wide, remote, forested area of Siberia. The Chelyabinsk meteor is also the only meteor confirmed to have resulted in a large number of injuries. The earlier-predicted close approach of another, larger asteroid that same day, the roughly 30-metre 367943 Duende (at the time still known by its provisional designation 2012 DA14) occurred about 16 hours later; the very different orbits of the two objects showed they were unrelated to each other.

Not much is left of the original German enclave of Koenigsberg, as this region was known before it was passed to the Soviet Union at the end of the Second World War. Allied air raids ruined the historic centre before the city was taken by the Soviet army.
One of the few surviving buildings is the medieval cathedral. Daily concerts on its recently restored pipe organ bring in visitors from all over Russia and the rest of the world.

Sit back and relax as we depart up to 4 times daily and view world-famous Split Apple Rock, New Zealand fur seals and a spotted cormorant nesting colony.
If, on the odd occasion, the weather changes while we are out, every passenger is allocated a covered seat for ultimate comfort.
From the 1st December to the 31st March every year, we will be departing daily from Nelson to Kaiteriteri and onwards to the Abel Tasman, returning at the end of the day. Throughout the winter months, we can also transport you to Kaiteriteri with our bus departing Nelson once per day. Refer to our website for travelling times and other activities we can offer through the park.
