Sidney Kingsley
Sidney Kingsley (22 October 1906 – 20 March 1995) was an American dramatist. He received the Pulitzer Prize for Drama for his play Men in White in 1934.
Life and career
Kingsley was born Sidney Kirschner in New York. He studied at Cornell University, where he began his career writing plays for the college dramatic club. He joined the Group Theater for the production of his first major work. In 1933 the company performed his play Men in White. Set in a hospital, the play dealt with the issue of illegal abortion, 1930s medical and surgical practices and the struggle of one promising physician who must choose to dedicate his life to medicine or devote himself to his fiancee. The play was a box-office smash.
Kingsley followed this success with the play Dead End in 1935. A story about slum housing and its connection to crime, the piece was also fairly successful, eventually spawning the Dead End Kids. The two plays which followed, the anti-war Ten Million Ghosts of 1936 and The World We Make of 1939, were flops and had short runs. But in 1943 Kingsley returned to his previous success with the historical drama The Patriots. This play, which told the story of Thomas Jefferson and his activities in the young American republic, won the New York Drama Critics Circle Award for Best Play. Kingsley continued writing for the theater late into his career, adapting Arthur Koestler's novel Darkness at Noon for the stage in 1951, and writing Lunatics and Lovers in 1954 and Night Life in 1962.

St. Francis College English Professor Mark Donnelly premiered his new play “No Dead End” with a two night reading in the College’s Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture & Education on November 13 and 14, 2015. “No Dead End” centers on Huntz Hall, a child actor who was part of the Dead End Kids, a group of teens who starred on Broadway and in feature films. The playwright’s father, Thomas Donnelly, was friends with actor Huntz Hall, one of the original members of the Dead End Kids. Donnelly’s father lived down the block from Hall on E. 30th St. in Manhattan in the 1930s. St. Francis College English Professor Mark Donnelly premiered his new play “No Dead End” with a two night reading in the College’s Maroney Forum for Arts, Culture & Education on November 13 and 14, 2015.
“No Dead End” centers on Huntz Hall, a child actor who was part of the Dead End Kids, a group of teens who starred on Broadway and in feature films.
The playwright’s father, Thomas Donnelly, was friends with actor Huntz Hall, one of the original members of the Dead End Kids. Donnelly’s father lived down the block from Hall on E. 30th St. in Manhattan in the 1930s. The playwright met Hall independently in Los Angeles in the 1980s and they became friends. “No Dead End” is based on these friendships.
The readings were directed by Communication Arts Professor Jake Turner. Recent St. Francis graduate Gabriel J. Hardy will perform with Mary Tierney and Jack O’Connell, who are both members of Actors Equity. All three events are free and open to the public.
Hall was one of the six young actors who played tough New York slum kids in Sidney Kingsley’s play “Dead End,” which opened on Broadway in 1935 to rave reviews and ran for a total of 684 performances. The teen actors went out to Hollywood in 1937 to make the film adaptation of the same name. They became known on as the Dead End Kids. The 1937 movie starred Sylvia Sidney, Joel McCrea, Claire Trevor and Humphrey Bogart. The Dead End Kids would go on to appear in other feature films, including “Crime School” with Bogart, “Angels with Dirty Faces” starring James Cagney and Pat O’Brien, and “They Made Me a Criminal” starring John Garfield.
The play readings and discussion have been underwritten through a grant from the Adjunct Professional Development Fund at St. Francis College.

Korda moved to New York City in 1957 where he worked for playwright Sidney Kingsley as a research assistant and then later as a freelance reader in the CBS story department.[1] In 1958 he joined the book publishing firm, Simon & Schuster, starting as an assistant editor, which included the task of reading slush pile manuscripts for Henry Simon.[1]
Many editors stick to one area of interest, but early on Korda demonstrated an ability and interest in editing both fiction and non-fiction. He states in his memoir that he edited books on everything from mathematics and philosophy, memoirs, fiction, translations from French, politics, anthropology and science history among others.[1]
After Robert Gottlieb left Simon & Schuster for Alfred E. Knopf, Korda became Editor-in-Chief of Simon & Schuster.[1] Korda was a major figure in the book industry, publishing numerous works by high-profile writers and personalities such as William L. Shirer, Will, and Ariel Durant, Harold Robbins,[1] Irving Wallace,[1] Richard Nixon and Ronald Reagan. Korda was a major part of Simon & Schuster for more than forty years and one of the most influential people in the business of book publishing. In the autumn of 1994, he was diagnosed as having prostate cancer. In 1997 he wrote Man to Man, which recounted his medical experience. In 2000, he published Another Life: A Memoir of Other People, about the world of publishing.[1]
In addition to being an editor, Korda was also a writer. In the mid-sixties Korda began to write freelance articles for Glamour Magazine and eventually wrote their film review column for almost ten years.[1] Korda also wrote for Clay Felker's New York magazine including a piece that eventually became his first book, Male Chauvinism and How it Works at Home and in the Office.[1] Korda's second book, Power!, reached the number one spot on the New York Times Bestseller list in 1975.[3]
