The term outsider art was coined by art critic Roger Cardinal in 1972 as an English synonym for art brut (French: [aʁ bʁyt], "raw art" or "rough art"), a label created by French artist Jean Dubuffet to describe art created outside the boundaries of official culture; Dubuffet focused particularly on art by those on the outside of the established art scene, such as psychiatric hospital patients and children.
While Dubuffet's term is quite specific, the English term "outsider art" is often applied more broadly, to include certain self-taught or naïve art makers who were never institutionalized. Typically, those labeled as outsider artists have little or no contact with the mainstream art world or art institutions. In many cases, their work is discovered only after their deaths. Often, outsider art illustrates extreme mental states, unconventional ideas, or elaborate fantasy worlds.
Outsider art has emerged as a successful art marketing category; an annual Outsider Art Fair has taken place in New York since 1993, and there are at least two regularly published journals dedicated to the subject. The term is sometimes misapplied as a catch-all marketing label for art created by people who are outside the mainstream "art world" or "art gallery system", regardless of their circumstances or the content of their work.
Jarvis Branson Cocker (born 19 September 1963) is an English musician, singer-songwriter, actor, voice actor, radio presenter, and music video director. He is known for being the frontman for the band Pulp. Through his work with the band, he became a figurehead of the Britpop genre of the mid-1990s. Following Pulp's hiatus, Cocker has led a successful solo career, and presents a BBC Radio 6 Music show called Jarvis Cocker's Sunday Service.
Cocker was born in Sheffield, West Riding of Yorkshire, growing up in the Intake area of the city. His father, Mac Cocker, a DJ and actor, left the family and moved to Sydney when Cocker was seven, and had no contact with Cocker or his sister, Saskia. Thereafter, both were brought up by their mother, who later became a Conservative councillor. Cocker credits his upbringing, almost exclusively in female company, for his interest in how women think and what they have to say. He wrote a song ("A Little Soul" on This Is Hardcore) about being abandoned by his father, working briefly as a butler, and in 1998 travelled with his sister to Australia to meet him for the first time in nearly 30 years.
Art is a diverse range of human activities in creating visual, auditory or performing artifacts – artworks, expressing the author's imaginative or technical skill, intended to be appreciated for their beauty or emotional power. In their most general form these activities include the production of works of art, the criticism of art, the study of the history of art, and the aesthetic dissemination of art.
The oldest form of art are visual arts, which include creation of images or objects in fields including painting, sculpture, printmaking, photography, and other visual media. Architecture is often included as one of the visual arts; however, like the decorative arts, it involves the creation of objects where the practical considerations of use are essential—in a way that they usually are not in a painting, for example. Music, theatre, film, dance, and other performing arts, as well as literature and other media such as interactive media, are included in a broader definition of art or the arts. Until the 17th century, art referred to any skill or mastery and was not differentiated from crafts or sciences. In modern usage after the 17th century, where aesthetic considerations are paramount, the fine arts are separated and distinguished from acquired skills in general, such as the decorative or applied arts.

Outsider Art is a catch-all term,’ explains Christie’s specialist Cara Zimmerman. ‘It encompasses a lot of different types of art makers, but I tend to classify it as art made by people who weren’t working within the artistic establishment.’ Find out more at http://www.christies.com/features/What-is-Outsider-Art-7659-3.aspx Most Outsider artists did not have any formal training: ‘They were influenced by pop culture and the world around them, but not directly by other mainstream artists. In the modern world, says Zimmerman, ‘the idea of an artist removed from society doesn’t exist’. James Kalm makes his yearly pilgrimage to the twenty-fifth iteration of the Outsider Art Fair. As the popularity of Outsider Art, Art Brut, and folk art increases, and the ideas and notions of producing work with no regard for the academy, the market or society’s tastes, more contemporary avant-garde artists are trying out this approach. Handicapped artist Josef Hofer is at the forefront of the Outsider Art movement. He has won the Euward award for his depictions of male eroticism. "Outsiders are artistic people who have some kind of handicap", explains Arnulf Rainer. Hofer's childhood was spent in tragic isolation where he found a creative outlet through his painting. His work is a prime example of L'Art Brut. This movement recognises art that arises spontaneously from an individual's creative power rather than being shaped by cultural influences. Crewhouse Media
The years I was numb feel no regrets
But there's hard to come cast out like a man
I surrounded myself with outsider art
It murdered my spirit and life fell apart
Alone in the garden I love by the sea
With none of the sense why chill over me
The feel last forever I think you can keep
My days were together and now it's last a week
Time is a bastard, the routine a hore
The sun is exploding what headache for war
With... sleeping the moon holds her knife
Her such one to seven will stand in my life
But in that brief moment our life's be collide
Freedom from cast with you by my side
No need for section who hold holy books
My notice is coming I see how it looks
Ohh, our lives they collide
Ohh, our lives they collide
Ohh, our lives they collide
Ohh, our lives they collide
Born of the... how alive
Born... the state back
Get out of life
Nothing last forever I think you can keep
My days were together my nuts last a week
Time is bastard, routine a hore
The sun is exploding what headache for war
Ohh, our lives they collide
Ohh, our lives they collide
Ohh, our lives they collide
Ohh, our lives they collide
Our lives they collide
