Debra Lynn Messing (born August 15, 1968) is an American actress. She is widely known for her television roles in Will & Grace and The Starter Wife.
Following her graduation from New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, Messing rose to prominence in television roles in several short-lived series, such as the Fox sitcom Ned & Stacey and the ABC's science fictional Prey. It was her casting as Grace Adler in the NBC sitcom Will & Grace which catapulted Messing to TV stardom. The series ran for eight seasons, and in 2003 she won the Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series for her performance. She also received critical acclaim for her work as Molly Kagan in the mini-series The Starter Wife. As of 2012, she is starring as Julia Houston, a leading role in the NBC musical drama series Smash.
Throughout her career she has been nominated for a total of six Emmy Awards, eight Golden Globe Awards and eight Screen Actors Guild Awards.
Messing was born in the Brooklyn borough of New York City, the daughter of Sandra (née Simons), who has worked as a professional singer, banker, travel and real estate agent, and Brian Messing, a sales executive for a costume jewelry packaging manufacturer. Messing is Jewish; she is a descendant of immigrants from Russia and Poland. When Messing was three, she moved with her parents and her older brother, Brett, to East Greenwich, Rhode Island.
Megan Kathleen Hilty (born March 29, 1981) is an American stage and television actress. She rose to prominence for her roles in several Broadway musicals including her performance as Glinda in Wicked and her portrayal of Doralee Rhodes in 9 to 5: The Musical. She is currently starring as Ivy Lynn on the television series Smash, which has just concluded its first season on NBC.
Hilty was born in Bellevue, Washington and is the daughter of Jack and Donna Hilty. She began taking vocal lessons at the age of 12. She attended Sammamish High School in Bellevue and the Washington Academy of Performing Arts Conservatory High School in Redmond, Washington. In 2004, she graduated from the Carnegie Mellon School of Drama and is a member of Actors' Equity. She is a recipient of the National Society of Arts and Letters Award for Excellence in Musical Theater. Her regional credits include productions of Café Puttanesca, Suds, and Michael John La Chiusa's The Wild Party.
Shortly before graduating from Carnegie Mellon University, Hilty auditioned for the hit musical Wicked. She moved to New York City after graduating and, in August 2004, she made her Broadway debut in the show as the standby for Glinda. She replaced original standby Laura Bell Bundy, whom got fired from the show due to a bad commitment to the entire company. Hilty took over the lead role from Jennifer Laura Thompson on May 31, 2005. After playing the role for a year, Hilty ended her run on May 28, 2006 and was succeeded by Kate Reinders.
Smash is an American musical drama series, revolving around the creation of a new Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe.
The series is broadcast in the United States on NBC, and is a production of DreamWorks Television. It premiered on February 6, 2012. On March 22, 2012, NBC renewed Smash for a second season, which will air as a midseason replacement in the 2012–13 United States television season.
The show was created by Theresa Rebeck and is co-produced by Steven Spielberg.
The show revolves around the creation of a new Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe, which is initially entitled Marilyn and evolves to become Bombshell after its first workshop. As the production takes shape, everyone involved in it must balance his or her often chaotic personal life with the all-consuming demands of a life in the theatre. The series features original music by composers Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman.
Development began in 2009 at Showtime by then-Showtime entertainment president Robert Greenblatt and Steven Spielberg, from an idea by Spielberg, who had been working on the concept for years. The original concept was that each season would follow the production of a new musical; if any of them were "stage-worthy", Spielberg would make them into actual Broadway musicals. The series was mainly inspired by The West Wing and Upstairs, Downstairs. Greenblatt then brought the project with him to NBC when he was made NBC Entertainment president in January 2011. Theresa Rebeck wrote the pilot script and is series creator. Executive producers Craig Zadan and Neil Meron suggested Rebeck for the series to Spielberg and Greenblatt. NBC ordered production of a pilot in January 2011 for the 2011–12 television season.
