Hello everyone! We have two great topics this month on Trans Talk. First, hostess Una Nowling and co-host Fiona Nowling are going to talk with Bonyen Lee-Gilmore from Planned Parenthood of Kansas and Mid-Missouri, who is going to discuss a new effort by Planned Parenthood to provide health services to transgender men and women. Next we will kick off a new series of interviews with individuals from the transgender community in Kansas and Missouri called “Transgender Kaleidoscope,” and our first guest in this series will be Rachel Mollie Martin, a retired Lt. Colonel and decorated Army Ranger, who has recently seen some major triumphs in her transition, and some serious stumbling blocks as well.

Fiona will give us the community calendar update, while Una will provide her view of some of the LGBT news this week.

On Trans Talk this month the topic is legislative assaults upon the transgender community, and we’re going to focusing on two subjects in particular. Hostess Una Nowling will first talk with someone fighting back against transgender discrimination – Stephanie Mott, who is the Executive Director of the Kansas Statewide Transgender Education Project, or KSTEP. She is courageously suing the state of Kansas for the right to change the gender marker on her birth certificate, and will be discussing her effort and how Kansas put itself in the position of denying valid records changes to transgender persons.

Next we will discuss the recent legislative efforts in Kansas to pass additional anti-transgender legislation, and we will compare these efforts with activities in other states as well. Sandra Meade will be our guest for that segment, and frequent listeners of this program will remember that not only is Sandra the former chair of Equality Kansas, she was the former hostess of this very show.

As usual, we will give a breakdown of some of the LGBT news this week, and we will finish up the show with the community calendar update.

On Trans Talk this month host Una Nowling and co-host Fiona Nowling will give a breakdown of some of the LGBT news of the week, and then speak with Dr. Hiten Soni, a psychiatrist who strongly supports the transgender community (especially regarding the subject of surgery.) Next they will speak with special guest will be Sieran, an intersex transgender person, who will discuss both his own personal journey and the challenges faced by intersex persons in general. The show will finish up with the community calendar update.

Artistic Director Eric Rosen will talk about the Kansas City Repertory Theatre production of “New Works”. Then in the second half of the show Actor Robert Gibby Brand will speak about the Spinning Tree Theatre production of “Amadeus”.

Who Was Ryan Stokes and Why Did The KCMO Police Kill Him?

It has been almost three years since Ryan Stokes was shot and killed by a KCMO Police officer. The officer said that he had seen Ryan with a gun and had shot him when Ryan turned toward other officers. A Grand Jury cleared the officer and said it was a justified shooting. The problem was that when Ryan was rolled over by the officers after being shot, the only thing he had in his hands were car keys and a flip phone.

Today host Jeff Humfeld talks with Ryans’s Mother Narene, Sister Chrystal, Cousin Monie and Best Friend Lover about who Ryan was, what he meant to his family, friends and community. We attempt to put a face on Ryan Stokesand dispel the press and police characterizations of him. We find out who Ryan was growing up, the kind of person he was with friends and family as well as out in the community.

Then in the second half of our broadcast host Keith Brown El, speaks with Attorney Cyndy Short, Ryan’s Mother Narene and best friend Lover about the night Ryan was killed. They will talk about the questions that still linger and what they feel is needed to get justice for Ryan.
