A slipway, boat slip or just a slip, is a ramp on the shore by which ships or boats can be moved to and from the water. They are used for building and repairing ships and boats. They are also used for launching and retrieving small boats on trailers and flying boats on their undercarriage. The nautical term ways is an alternative name for slipway. A ship undergoing construction in a shipyard is said to be on the ways. If a ship were scrapped there, she is said to be broken up in the ways.
As the word "slip" implies, the ships or boats are moved over the ramp, by way of crane or fork lift, prior to the move the vessel's hull is coated with grease, which then allows the ship or boat to "slip" off of the ramp and progress safely into the water. Slipways are used to launch (newly built) large ships, but can only dry-dock or repair smaller ships. Pulling large ships against the greased ramp would require too much force. For dry-docking large ships, one must use carriages supported by wheels or by roller-pallets. These types of dry-docking installations are called "marine railways". Nevertheless the words "slip" and "slipway" are also used for all dry-docking installations that use a ramp.

R/C boat trailer build, launch and recover
I put this vid together while I was brainstorming up the idea for a trailer for my new R/C boat. The boat is a Proboat Shockwave 26 V3 brushless which, in this vid, is running on 3s lipo. The truck is RC4WD Traifinder 2, pretty much stock. I wasn't really intending to put together an actual "how-to" video so it's really just documenting the steps I took and showing my progress along the way. I filmed it because I was looking for ideas when I started to make my trailer but didn't find too many vids that showed someone in the various stages of making their own trailer. There were enough completed projects and such but just not enough that showed perhaps the material used or the progress at various stages to get a picture of perhaps how to do it myself. After a year of work, designing and building a medium size water craft with a mission to take Filipino's and supplies to include Bibles and other health and spiritual literature around the region, Steven Jenkins unusual design is proving to be effective in that it floats, and only a day after launching, a typhoon came by which it survived. Anyone, including myself that has launched a boat hundreds of times over many years has either been there, almost been there, wondered if they'd ever be there, wondered what they would do if they did it, discussed it happening with others, seen someone go there, and mostly, strongly sympathize with anyone that does have this misfortune. I originally heard that this was an entire family with 2 very small children, but found out after making the video that the guy was by himself (that day) and that the rest of the family came when they were notified. My 14ft Aluminum boat is launched at the Corsons Inlet Ramp in OCNJ. My motor won't start and I have attempted for over an hour. Can't get it started so we replaces my old keel roller with a new one. I put this vid together while I was brainstorming up the idea for a trailer for my new R/C boat. The boat is a Proboat Shockwave 26 V3 brushless which, in this vid, is running on 3s lipo. I wasn't really intending to put together an actual "how-to" video so it's really just documenting the steps I took and showing my progress along the way. I filmed it because I was looking for ideas when I started to make my trailer but didn't find too many vids that showed someone in the various stages of making their own trailer. There were enough completed projects and such but just not enough that showed perhaps the material used or the progress at various stages to get a picture of perhaps how to do it myself.
A little more than the first half of the vid is the actual construction of my trailer. No action and thrills here folks, I'm not the most DYNAMIC speaker ok haha! But the intent, although somewhat long, was to show what it was I was looking for when brainstorming my own project.
The last part of the vid is the actual running of my truck with the trailer and launching/recovering the boat. The launch site wasn't the greatest, I'll have to find a better one but it gives the idea anyhow. My cameraman is only 8 so has his own commentary and can be a little off with what he's shooting but I'm proud of him as he did a fairly good job. This video has been edited and kinda pieced together but no music, just the actual video footage and sound.
My hopes are that this helps anyone that might be looking to build their own trailer. You may not want exactly what I have but perhaps this along with any other stuff you may find might get you what you're looking for. Use anything in this vid that's of use, that's why I made it!

Anyone, including myself that has launched a boat hundreds of times over many years has either been there, almost been there, wondered if they'd ever be there, wondered what they would do if they did it, discussed it happening with others, seen someone go there, and mostly, strongly sympathize with anyone that does have this misfortune. Nothing can ruin a perfect day out of the water like this.
I originally heard that this was an entire family with 2 very small children, but found out after making the video that the guy was by himself (that day) and that the rest of the family came when they were notified.
What is most scary about this is that the entire thing was witnessed by one of the launch owners, and she said she saw the guy crawl out of the window before the truck completely sank. Yet when the truck was recovered, all the windows were up. Apparently (speculating) the electrical system shorted out and the windows went up on their own. That could have meant very tragic consequences had there been others in the truck.
Possibly a safety regulation that needs to be addressed???
Just so thankful we watched only a truck and trailer recovered!
To the young fisherman......I heard this was your first visit to Bayou Corne, and that you were checking it out to bring your family back later. Please do come back. You picked a day to come after we received more than 9 inches of rain in a very short time period, and resulting extremely high and muddy water.
Bayou Corne is most definitely worth a return visit, and as you found out, there is plenty of friendly, helpful people very close by!
