Tools!
First we needs tools!
You can buy tools from the
NPC merchant, represented by a green scythe icon on the world map. Or alternatively, you can also craft tools if you have the house
function rented. I prefer just buying tools right now, and this saves my workers and their stamina for other work I need them for.
Once you have tools, right click it in your inventory to equip it in your tool slot.
Fishing poles are the only tool that replace your weapon slot.
Find your resource like a tree, plant or mining node for example, and an icon, same as the NPC merchant, will pop up. This lets you know you can gather from that
point. You can gather without tools, but you will probably get little or nothing.
Every time you gather, it uses up 1 vigor from your character, and 1 durability from your tool. I don't know if tools can be repaired, but again, they're very cheap, so I just sell it back to the merchant and buy a new one.
You can also send your workers to gather materials for you. This is usually the way you want to go when you need to gather materials in bulk. A single work trip for example to a farm, can bring back about a dozen potatoes each time!
There may be some resources though that only you or your worker can gather. At this time, the only way I know to quickly gather sap for example, is to go to the trees myself and collect it with the syringe tool.
Processing can also be limited for your character or workers. For example, I can cut wood easily into planks. However, black stone dust seems to be only obtainable by a function in house with your worker.
To process materials yourself, hit the L button to bring up the processing menu.
Select the method of processing. For example if you want to process wood into planks, select the chop wood option.
Right click your wood, and then select the top option to begin processing.
Keep in mind, you will likely need more than one material to process it into a crafting material. For example, I need 5 iron ores to smelt into 1 iron piece. Or 5 logs to make 1 wood plank.
Again, some processing is specialized with house functions. To make metal ingots for example, I need to have rented the specific house function that turns metal pieces into metal ingots.
Crafting, just like gathering, and processing, also has similar specialized methods.
For example, you can easily cook meals in your house with a kitchen. All you need is the layout function (usually the bottom) that gives you a
Sims style layout to place furniture and decorations in. Buy a kitchen stove from a cook in the village. The cooks can also sell you spices and herbs for cooking.
Crafting a boat on the other hand, that we leave up to our workers. The great thing about workers crafting for you, is that if it's a big project like a boat, that has multiple parts that need building, you can send multiple workers to work on each part simultaneously!
To craft with a house function, make sure you have the function rented, and the materials your workers need in your town storage. Once they're done, you will find the finished product in your town storage!
I hope this guide was helpful.
