Shepherd Entertainment gives you the history of the holy
Mount Athos (as known as
Agion Oros), a unique and highly restricted
monk republic who captures the imagination of travelers all around the world.
Sarti is a perfect starting place for our unique cruise towards Mount Athos in the south. Greece has always had a special intimate relationship with metaphysics. The whole country is imbued with universal thoughts that are a significant part of the national consciousness.
Books and museums are filled with the names of martyrs, saints, heroes, gods and related legends. Such a unique special
point of the
Greek landscape is the desolate land of the republic of
Mount Athos monastery that has sunk into silence.
On the grounds of the imperial bull from 1060, the holy mountain, Agion Oros is a prohibited area for women children and female families even today. Moreover, even adult men can enter the place only with special permission which is called the diamontrion.
Cruise ships can approach the coast only up to
500 meters since they usually carry women and children too.
According to legend, the mountain was given its name after
Athos the giant who together with his fellow giants longed for the power of the
Olympian deities
. In the fight, a deity threw the mountain on his opponent which is truly shown in the current landscape. According to the belief of the monks living here the windswept the
Virgin Mary to Athos
Mountain then she declared the mountain her own garden where no other women were allowed to enter. Local people lived here in organized communities and hermit fellowships following monastic rules. In the monasteries of
Xenophon, Xeropatamou,
Vatopedi,
Agios Pavlos, Lavra,
Iviron,
Hilandar, Pontokrator, --,
Stavronikita, Agios San Rehas, and Agios
Panteleimon called Russikon by locals.
Originally, 20 monasteries were built on the peninsula. Founding the
21st one was forbidden meaning that any newly built ones had to join one of the existing and acknowledged orders. Several chapels, hermitages and caves can be found deep inside the rocks.
Our cruise ends at the beaches of Sikia Beach where travelers can have lunch, relax and swim in the sea. Sikia is the oldest village at the bottom of Sithonia Peninsula. The settlement used to belong to the monasteries of Mount Athos, chiefly to
Megisti Lavra.
Swimming in the tranquil, calm, isolated bay embraced by the mountains is a pleasant experience. On our way home, much to our delight, frisky playful dolphins accompany our ship.
Landing at the attractive rocky port of Sarti, content with the experience of the day, is a fantastic adventure.
