The First Battle of the Marne (1914)
In this week in military history, we explore the First Battle of the Marne in 1914, where French and the British Expeditionary Forces fought to prevent the German advance on Paris in WWI.
The first Battle of the Marne took place 30 miles from Paris between September 6th – 12th. It was an opportunity for the BEF and French to stop the German advancement, that had already marched through Belgium and parts of France in their advance towards Paris.
Using French air reconnaissance and radio intercepts, the very first time these had been used in a major conflict, French Commander in Chief, General Joseph Joffre, ordered Michel-Joseph Maunoury’s French Sixth Army to attack.
Using requisitioned Paris taxis and buses—the first extensive use of motorized transport in wartime and forever cele...

The 10 Decisions that decided the March to the Marne | Ross Beadle
In terms of sheer scale, no matter how you measure it, the first four weeks were the most appalling of the war. Although there is some dispute over the exact figures, between 20 August and 27 August 1914, the French army lost 40,000 men with 27,000 killed on 22 August alone. The Battle of Charleroi cost the French around 80,000 casualties in three days. There was an almost ‘July 1st 1916’ level of attrition, but over four weeks.
The distances covered were enormous too. The German Second Army marched over 300 kilometres and fought four battles along the way. The First Army outside it marched even further. The final battle front on the river Marne stretched 280 kilometres. Yet this huge campaign was conducted by wholly inexperienced commanders using 19th century tactics of open country figh...

The Marne, 1914 - Holger Herwig
The First Battle of the Marne was the battle that halted the advance of the German Army across northern France in the fall of 1914. With the advance halted the German and Allied armies dug in to hold their ground, thus setting the stage for the bloody stalemate that would exist for the near entirety of World War I on the Western Front.
Dr. Holger Herwig, professor and Canada Research Chair in Military and Strategic Studies at the University of Calgary, discusses the development of, the key individuals involved, and the attitudes surrounding the battle he argues to be the most decisive land battle since Waterloo.
Recorded November 10, 2013 in J.C. Nichols Auditorium at the National World War I Museum at Liberty Memorial.

Using requisitioned Paris taxis and buses—the first extensive use of motorized transport in wartime and forever celebrated as the “taxis of the Marne” – Maunoury and his reinforcements rushed to the front.
Soon, six French Armies and the BEF met an overextended Imperial German Army. Famously the men of the BEF employed their bolt action Lee enfield with such speed and accuracy that the advancing Germans believed they were being met with machine guns.
By September 9th, they had seemingly encircled and destroyed the German First and Second Armies. General von Moltke faltered and a general retreat to the Aisne River was ordered.
The Germans dug in, resulting in trench warfare and an eventual stalemate that would last for four years. The German retreat ended their hopes of a quick victory and foiled the German Schlieffen Plan. The war now would certainly not be over by Christmas.

Yet this huge campaign was conducted by wholly inexperienced commanders using 19th century tactics of open country fighting but with twentieth century technology, notably quick firing cannon.
Even with so much new technology, and over a million men on either side, in the final analysis it was the key decisions taken by the senior commanders that decided the issue. Not just Joffre and Moltke, but Bulow, Kluck, Sir John French and a little known lieutenant colonel, the German Head of Intelligence Richard Hentsch.
The talk by Ross Beadle identifies the ten key decisions taken by the respective commanders. Understanding what drove these decisions is the best way to get to grips with the crazy swirl of events up until Moltke opted to break of the action and ordered a German retreat to the river Aisne.
